E3 09: First look at Genius' Scratch photo

Earlier this week, Genius Products invited us out to their offices to get an exclusive, early hands-on of their upcoming turntable-based music game, Scratch: The Ultimate DJ

While the game will officially be revealed to the world this Wednesday night, we got a first-look at the controller, as well as a chance to play a few tracks. More detailed hands-on impressions will be going up later this week, but Genius' Mike Rubinelli was nice enough to chat it up with us about what you can expect when the game ships.

Hit the jump for the first look at Scratch, and at me looking like an idiot in the process.

Wow, Nick Chester. Just wow.

Anyway, I'm psyched for this game.

AWESOME.

I wonder which one I'm gonna end up choosing: DJ Hero, or Scratch.

It's really going to depend on the tracklist for me. DJ Hero has DJ Shadow, so I'm currently drawn towards that, instead.

Man this game and that controller shit all of DJ Hero.

I feel myself more appealed by Scratch much more than DJ Hero. If any songs of the soundtrack includes Pete Rock , DJ Premier , Ez Mo Bee , GrandMaster Flash , Jam Master Jay , Marle Marl , Marco Polo or Scott La Rock joints this will be an instant buy for me.

Classic Hip Hop!

@Chicken008:

Played a few tracks, although I'm not 100% on which ones I can talk about with incurring the wrath of PR. But I will say, you will be surprised at some of the stuff that appears on the game's track list... it's varied, and there are some pretty amazing artists on there. It's not just mainstream stuff that you might expect from a game.

Yeah. The track lists are what will determine which (if either) of these games I get. Mechanically though, it looks pretty solid.

I still say the controller is ugly as hell and Beatmania's controller is superb.

@Chronic

True yes, but you still have to admit this controller is worlds better than DJ Hero's piss poor attempt at a DJ controller.

At this point I'm excited about both... But I really need to see some kind of a track list for scratch. :/

I want to buy his game because he's a nice guy.

To me, Scratch looks much more compelling. I swear, I'm not trying to plug my own shit here, but look at this footage for an Expert difficulty song on DJ Hero. It looks way too simple. But that's just my opinion.

This is interesting, we have 2 DJ games comming and they are actually pretty different. And i may need to end up buying both... This seems a lot more free and that would make the replay value big if it actually gives you the amount of freedom they are promising, and the DJ Hero is all about premade mixes and it seems that it may be a bit more challenging on some parts even with that simple ass controller, and the fact that it also has the guitar tracks helps a lot...

So i'll just have to wait and see. But the games seems pretty different.

This looks pretty hot. I would feel a lot more comfortable with it if Harmonix were behind it, but let's see what these guys can do.

I'm leaning towards scratch, as I've heard they have Deltron 3030 and Gorillaz on their track list. It will be extremely tough for DJ Hero to outdo them.

(read: Gorillaz is my favorite band ever + 3030 is my favorite rap album ever)

This looks a lot better than DJ Hero in terms of controller, interface, and gameplay, though I think I'll hold my opinion on which one is better until I see some sort of expert chart for both games.

Wow I love the controller! The one for Dj Hero seemed pretty meh, but this one seems to rock! ( pun intended :p )

Hey Nick, be sure to let us know which of the 2 turntables feels the best ;-)

Scratch looks really good, especially when compared to DJ Hero, let's just hope the soundtrack is better too.

I agree, especially considering that Beatmania is harder than THIS, people are going to ace expert on DJ Hero really easily.

In reality, I don't expect this to do too well, based on the premise of it trying to beat the "Hero" brand. However this genuinely does look better.

I have no interest in either of the DJ games. I watched this solely to see Nick play the controller off of his butt. Mission Accomplished *GW Bush chuckle*

DJ Hero has DJ Shadow on board to test and give approval to stuff, but when I heard you could import tracks on Scratch, I have switched over to that game. That, and the fact that a few comments are positive about the controller...
