We were quite surprised to see the announcement of Final Fantasy XIV this morning during Sony's E3 press conference. Now we have more details on the game and its launch, set to drop worldwide in 2010.
Final Fantasy XIV is a massively-multiplayer role-playing game where you'll explore the vast realm of Eoreza. We have learned that this release will have language support for Japanese, English, French, and German, and will see a global launch on both the PS3 and Windows PCs.
We now know that the staff for their latest is made up of Final Fantasy veterans. Hiromichi Tanaka is the producer, and he previously worked on Final Fantasy I, II, III, and XI. The art direction comes from Akihiko Yoshida, who headed up the delicious Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy XII in the past. Finally, Nobuo Uematsu is back on board for the musical score.
This is already sounding like an epic MMO.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I hope it's good.
Not interested in the game though.
That is the question.
Also this is hot. Which is coming out though? I mean damn what is it a 2-3 year wait? I really want an MMO for the PS3. IF and a big IF it's good enough.
Why Square? Yes, WoW is extremely profitable..... oh wait, that's why you're doing it right? Because you think you can beat Blizzard at their own game? Haha.
Granted, an FF MMO has a better chance of beating WoW than pretty much any other MMO out there, but that chance is still slim. WoW simply has too much of an iron grip.
They've obviously spent a lot of time on this, time which could have been spent releasing XIII quicker, or developing better games, instead of blowing no-doubt millions of dollars on an MMO that will most likely never be able to fully challenge the Blizzard Monolith. I know FF XI sold reasonably well, but it has come no where NEAR World Of Warcraft levels.
Jeez SquareEnix - stick to making pure FF games. I know the temptation to branch out into "other" styles of gaming is strong, but you're best at making JRPGs, so stick to that. Remember that shooter game they made? Oh boy did that suck. Square Enix are branching out too fast, juggling too many projects at once, and the odds that all those projects will hit the carpet like so many badly juggled eggs are increasing.
What an ignorant comment. You do know that FFXI is still SE's #1 money maker, right? They're doing it because they will make a ton of money off of it, not because WoW is out there. You do know that MMORPGs are still profitable and have been even with WoW, right? EverQuest 2? Lord of the Rings? City of Heroes/Villains? All are very successful and make a ton of money that fund other projects for the companies.
We would be in a nearly monopolized society. I don't think you realized how dumb your statement was so I'll let it slide.
Um... what? Macs were out before what we'd really consider IBM compatible machines.
And Linux has been around in some capacity long before Windows.
Also what monopoly was Apple shattering with Iphone? lol
So sad Yoshida is going to be used for another crappy MMO =/
Linux was made around 1991 where as the originating operating system DOS was 1960s.
Ya huge difference there.
Hey stupid, FFXI is doing well considering its 6 years old. It's on PS2/360/PS3/and PC platforms. It still has millions of subscribers and has been around LONGER than WoW. They are not jumping on any bandwagon, but following through with a proper mmo sequel that they promised over 4 years ago.
I'm totally pumped for this game, and will be picking it up on PC for sure.
The rest of you who are not interested in MMO games, why leave mean comments. Were all friends here, and some of us like MMO's, you guys should calm the fuck down. Plus two FF in one year, one for everyone, time to calm down and be happy that we have so much choice next year, even if one is not for you.
It's ok youngster.
Even though FFXI was their first MMO, and it had quite a few flaws. I think that SE can definitely improve a lot upon FFXIV
FF13 looked terrible, BTW. The characters and voice acting were the worst. Reminded me of FF10, my most hated Final Fantasy.
Best E3 Ever.
1) FAST TRAVEL - for the love of god start us out with a trusty chocobo!
2) If i loose one more level from dying.. - Nuff said >.>
3) ???
4) PROFIT
Now if only they can do that with the regular Final Fantasy games, and not just the revenue raising MMO games, then the whole world will be a much better place because of it!!
Time Sinks, Sadistic Pop Windows (IE 24-72 Real hours, that being a moderate norm), a lack of instancing (hopefully they finally pick up one of the best features of WoW), and with my Final play, the complete lack of reasonable areas to get XP at.
I played FFXI for years, have a bunch of friends who still play, but End-Game in one MMO = All MMOs. EPIC Time Loss, Poor Drop Rates, Psycho-Emo people.
Before I threw in the towel again around Jan, I had my Monk and Bard @ 75. I was happy, since I just got Bard to 75 and was like 'Yay, Merit like a Pr0' time. That was decimated by 2 factors:
1. No One, except people in your Linkshell want to XP anywhere but the ToAU areas.
2. The ToAU areas have great XP/hour rates, but absolutely pathetic amounts of areas to XP. It was approx. 3 parties per zone that would work well, with 2000-3000 people online, and I was on a medium population server.
SE, if you see this, walk away with one absolute fact.
- Making people XP like they are trying to Claim a NM is completely Evil. Instance the damn XP zones, if you insist on the Time Sink for XP.
Then again, Time Sinks and MMOs are essential to profit, but you can still make a buck without pitting everyone against each other, for XP!
