E3 09: Final Fantasy VII coming to the PSN! Finally! photo

When Final Fantasy VII was announced for release on the Japanese PSN store, I actually went and logged in to the store to have a look. I was reduced to a blubbering pile of mush to find the main page of the shop redone with the legendary image of Cloud standing in front of a towering Midgar. I considered downloading it despite the fact my Japanese reading skills aren't up to par just yet -- I wanted it so bad!

In today's Sony press conference (liveblog still going here), they announced that fifty classic games will be rereleased on the PSN this year, starting off with Final Fantasy VII (which we already thought was coming, but still, I was happy to see it). No word on pricing yet, but like that matters -- people will be foaming at the mouth to buy the game even if they already own multiple copies. Feel free to go into the comments and tell me how Sony is manipulating me by making me rebuy the same game. I am totally aware of it, and I have no problem with that whatsoever. All I can say is, HELL YEAH!

[Update: The price was confirmed this evening at $9.99. It's available now -- go get it!]

I'm a little under impressed here. I own the game. The game is pretty easy to get in the first place. Sure, its nice to have it for download, but how about giving a classic some upgrades? I'm getting a little tired of the re-hash and the excuse, "Well, wasn't it good on a disc? Well now you can DOWNLOAD it!" Woo hoo. At least SF2 came back in HD and MVC2 got a bit of a graphics revamp. Come on Square, where did all the love go?

Great game, but it benefits way too much from retro goggles IMO. I wonder though if we'll see a surge in studios creating games with emo effeminate male leads with unrealistically large swords as a result. Lost Odyssey (loved it too, but come'on) sequel, anyone?

Well, I have the game on my shelf over there, and I have a PS3 right in front of me. But i'm not being a sucker and putting discs in to play that game anymore!

Though I wont download it immediately, the price is sure to be a bit steep on this one. Next time I feel like going through it I'll go for the download.

Also, anyone turned on their PS3 recently and seen the new format of the shop. Same thing, but a bit shinier.

God dammit Square, I didn't wait years and years for a lazy ass rerelease of a game that has graphics which have aged very badly. This being rereleased now just means we'll have to wait another ear or two or three for them to MAYBE remake it since they're not going to release the game twice so close together.

God I hate Square-Enix, go back to being SquareSoft.

All I can ask is "When will the store update?" Got this PSP sleeping with a jolt now and then to update the Info Board. If it's more than $10, though... I may be hesitant (kefkaesque has a valid stance).

Someone d/l it and tell whether they shifted anything.

Hey Europe!
Bend Over and get ready to take some "You aint getting none of this" Rape.

If this comes out on the EU PSN aswell, I'd probably die of shock.

Nothing added to this old game? No extras? No graphical update? No nothing? I've already beaten the game like a decade ago. Do I want to pay and download the game again? No, I don't.

@ Platypus

Bitter much? Enjoy recharging your PSP because I bet you'll need a firmware update. I know I haven't touched mine since Chains of Olympus.

Fine. Let me flame bait the bitter fan more over a game I actually liked because I dared voice a common criticism of his/her beloved FFVII(and JRPGs in general really). The character models were ugly, the materia system was contrived, Chocobo Racing was a shoddy distraction at best, and summons were nothing more than a poor man's Esper and crutch for lousy enemy design and pacing.

Once again, I will point out that it was a good, at times, great game that I actually like quite a bit. But as with all things, it was not perfect and IMO benefits too much from nostalgia.

Sounds like today is a bad day to play games on PSN. Fanboy mass-downloading will kill PSN probably.

I'm underwhelmed. I'm sorry, but this game just didn't age well at all. Call me when it doesn't look worse than a DS game, then we'll talk.

I can't even play this on my PSP. I tried a while back but the graphics are so bad I just put on Lunar 1/2 cause those graphics rocked my world.
