E3 09: Check out Final Fantasy XIII on the 360! photo

We saw some footage from Final Fantasy XIII from Microsoft's press conference this morning, and I have to say it was great to finally see it in action on the 360 (not to mention in English!). We have some video for you of what we saw, and now you can watch it too and form your own opinions, although be warned that if you've seen or played the Japanese demo none of this will be new territory.

I'm glad I at least have a general season to rely on for the release of FF XIII, because now I want it more than ever. I think I'd prefer to own it for the PS3, not because I think it looks better on one console or the other, but I've really been enjoying gaming on my PS3 these days. Does seeing this footage sway you to want the 360 version more?

Looks nice. But sorry, MS. I don't have a 360. PS3 for me.

BTW, I love (LOOOOOOVE) the subtle transition into battle scenes.

Man, the English really brings this game down. I think it actually affected the bumpmapping on some of the textures.

I'm trying to avoid the 360 versions so I won't have to deal with their rude Filipino tech support when I get the inevitable red rings. I'm just bitter cause they started to patronize me when they found out that I was also Filipino. Sony can have my money.

Looks awesome, but I'm still getting it on the PS3. I just want it in all it's glory and the 360's achievements will distract me from the game sometimes, I just know it.

I find this strange, does no one else notice the FPS of the game goes from a range of 0-30FPS. Meaning it's not a constant 30FPS. 0FPS means it freezes even if for a split second and at times it looks like it hits 12FPS and stutters up to 25FPS.

I think it needs a little more work, I mean from what I see this might even get delayed. Either that or they need to drop a lot of texture quality.

I suppose I'll be getting the 360 version, unless I decide to get a Blu-ray player and start liking trophies more than achievements between now and the release date.

Or maybe your video card is having trouble handling YouTube HD? What time specifically did it slow down. I just rewatched it to check, and it looks fine to me. Also you have to keep in mind they're probably filming a 60Hz feed with a 24 FPS camera, and this is going to cause mild hitching even if the game is running perfectly.

I have both systems and I'm going with the PS3 on this one, which I usually do on multi-platform games, simply because the 360 sounds like a mid-flight bowing while on. Also because I had to practically sell my soul for a PS3.

I don't know if you guys heard about this on Eurogamer or not, but FFXIII is presumably locked at 30FPS, and it falls down to 15 in certain areas.

I'm talking about the PS3 version, btw.

I find it strange.....that anyone would try to analyze footage taken from what appears to be distance greater than 100 feet….

Wasn't FF XIII suppose to show off all that the PS3 could do that the 360 couldn't? I wonder if they scaled it back to make it multiplatform.
Waquan's Avatar - Comment posted on 06/01/2009 22:50

Holiday, why would they be scaling things down if the game drops down to the 15-20FPS range on the PS3, which is the system where the production started?

Uh ok, I own the demo and have played through it at least 20 times and I have yet to see one single spot where the frame rate dropped to 15-20fps.

Such a shame this game is going to have been nerfed to fit on a DVD and run on an errorbox.

Money truely is the root of all evil, the massive userbase of skinflint errorbox owners has frozen the gaming idustry in time, with no real benefit of pushing forward when there's so much money to be made milking the errobox cash cow.

Meh.

Will be getting this on PS3.

Well, either Eurogamer's lying or you do not know what the hell you're talking about. What should I go with?

Eurogamer is full of shit then, I know exactly what I'm talking about, I've been a pc gamer all my life and build computers and benchmark them for a living so I know what framerate drops look like and I can't stand anything under 60fps, as ffxiii only runs at 30fps it's already aggravating, but I never noticed it dipping anywhere below that. Sounds like Eurogamer is just a bunch of 360 fanboys to me trying to stir up the console war machine.
