E3 09: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow officially announced photo

The fourth Kojima Production game was just announced at the Konami press conference and it's a new Castlevania game! It's called Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and it has something to do with that melting mask that was on the Konami teaser site. It's being developed for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and should be out 2010.

The trailer that was shown features Patrick Stewart, Robert Carlysle, Jason Isaacs and Natasha McElhone. Dave Cox, producer on the game, says that this is "a new and bold take on the Castlevania mythology. [It's] a fresh and radical re-imagining in a rich, open game world."

We'll bring you the trailer, images and more as soon as we get it. So, excited for a new Castlevania?

I'm not 100% sure about this. As much as I love Kojima, I'm going to be wary.
Castlevania Judgment hurt a lot...

Thsi better be the earth-shatteringly amazing 3D Castlevania we've been expecting for all these years.

What the fuck happened to a 2D Castlevania for consoles?

I want to know why Iga isn't at the helm. It's disquieting to me, he's since SOTN (as Asst. Director), and has produced most (all?) Castlevania games since. So I hope he's involved.

I don't care if its 3d or 2d at this point. DO WANT!

(Still, would like a 2d one for consoles as well...)

His 2d games are great, but the 3d games made during his tenure were TERRIBLE!

The first Castlevania in a console for a long time wont be in 2D.

EH. Could be good either way.

I don't mind Kojima talking the helm, just to mix it up a little. I do worry about him taking it way out to left field and completely unraveling the story from all of the older titles. As long as they keep the common elements like the Belmonts and VK, then I am cool with them designing new enemies, boss, environments, etc.

The story has already gone batshit insane. Dracula is the most returningest villain this side of Dr. Wily.

After playing OoE, I think I'm done with Castlevania. All they every make me want to do is play Metroid, and I have a lot more fun with Metroid anyway.

I'm glad IGA is gone. That guy sucks at making games. He is great at making you a big sandbox to play in except he locks away portions of the sandbox for no real reason and also the sandbox is empty.

The only exception is Order of Ecclesia where he actually made it fun to play (possibly spurred by Nobuya Nakazato (director of several Contra games) rather than just fun to experience.

On another note, I saw a trailer on Youtube (I don't think it's the trailer mentioned in the post) and I like that the hero actually looks like a man again rather than the Final Fantasy Bishoshen boys the series has been using for the last couple installments.

Also glad to see the return of the whip. I'm not a fan of the games without that whip (except for OOE) since I always felt the mid-range of the combat was a staple of Castlevania and I like the whip as an original weapon for the series.

Finally, PATRICK STEWART IN A CASTLEVANIA GAME!! How did they get him!? With him we are guaranteed at least one good performance.

Actually, I just checked the other actors on Wikipedia and apparently they are all fantastic. Seems like Konami is really trying on the voice work for this one (It'll make me sad not to hear the classic bad acting/dialogue of SOTN).

@Garison

It got left behind.

Times change dude, a 2D Castlevania on the current consoles is just never gonna happen now matter how much you might want one. An arcade release maybe sorta like that Shadow whatever game that Epic announced but a full blown 60 dollar 2D Castlevania on the 360 or PS3? Never gonna happen.

I for one am looking forward to this cause Patrick Stewart is involved in some capacity.

Yeahh , I'm kind of sad that IGA isn't involved. Kojima is great with Metal Gear, but I don't need him in my Castlevania. Also, who is Mercury Steam? I don't really care for the character design, even if it does make sense given the game's location.
I'm wary, but I won't rule the game out YET. I just miss IGA and Ayami Kojima.

Kojima involved means a whole lot of cutscenes. I don't care for them. I'd much rather have a console 2d castlevania, but as many mentioned, it won't happen. When I spoke to them about the possibility during the GDC, they looked at me like I was crazy.

The gameplay in the trailer looks damn promising, plus you got Picard AND Bigby doing voice work? Hell yeah.

I'm still curious what this means for IGA and that game that was teased at TGS called Castlevania NEXT? did it get scrapped? did Konami hand over the reins to Kojima and leave IGA to work on handheld stuff?

Rich, open game world sounds fine. Considering Castlevania has been one of my favorite series' ever, I'm a little worried about "radical re-imagining".

IGA should stick to 2D Castlevania, those games you don't have to change a god damn thing and I'll still play them cus they're awesome.

Lord of Shadows though, looks like a 3D castlevania game I will buy for sure. Looks awesome.

I second Garison`s question.

Also, whatever it turns out to be, they MUST get Michiru Yamane to do the soundtrack, for gods sake!! I`m not even going to bother if they don`t.

Just do a 2D one, konami, pleeeeeaase!!!!

Please, please rule. I want to love a next gen Castlevania game, please don't bollocks it up.

I gotta say, I look at what Cliffy B is doing with a 3D-2D shooter on XBLA, and I know I would support a normal retail release of a Castlevania game that was 3d-2d or HD sprites.

I'm willing to give God of Castlevania a chance though.

Also, I'll strongly, STRONGLY second Lovemana23 - They need to take the soundtrack seriously, its such a key part of the experience and franchise.

And don't make the whole castle a ruin of old broken stone, it always has its mix of ruins and riches.

I liked the "Metroidvania" style SOTN and the GBA/DS titles, but one of my favorite series is Devil May Cry. If this game is a merger of the two, I think we'll have a new standard.
