E3 09: Atlus announces Shiren the Wanderer for the Wii photo

For all you Mystery Dungeon fans, Atlus has announced they've acquired the rights to the Wii title Shiren the Wanderer. The Mystery Dungeon series has had a spotty release over here in the US, although you might be more familiar with Chocobo's Dungeon or Pokemon Mystery Dungeon -- same series. The first Shiren game released was translated by Sega back in 2006 and brought over here to the DS.

While we're waiting on the second title's DS remake to be translated, Atlus has brought over Shiren 3 to the US, which will be hitting store shelves in Spring 2010. This rogue-like title received incredibly high marks from Famitsu (9/9/8/9) , and so we're looking forward to giving this a shot once something is available for us to play. In the meantime, there's always staring at the page Atlus has set up.

I guess now would be a good time to pick up the DS title and get some practice in, wouldn't it?

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA -- JUNE 2, 2009 -- Atlus U.S.A., Inc. today surprised everyone with the news that it has secured the North American publishing rights for Shiren the Wanderer™, the critically-acclaimed roguelike RPG for Wii™.  As Shiren, a wandering adventurer with a penchant for exploration, monster-slaying, and item collection, you will trek across a beautiful and varied countryside with your companion, Koppa, a talking ferret.  Randomly-generated areas, intense boss battles, extensive item customization, and a cast of intriguing and unpredictable characters translate into one of the most satisfying RPG experiences of the year.

Exceptionally reviewed by famed Japanese gaming publication Famitsu (9/9/8/9), this latest entry in the legendary series stands as one of the most addictive, highly rewarding, and endlessly replayable games available on Wii, not to mention the most accessible Shiren game yet.

Shiren the Wanderer is currently scheduled for release on Wii in Spring 2010.

I may not know much about the series, but that image would make an awesome desktop background!

Also don't copy things out of the press release when you include the press release.

Nice! I did a write up about the DS version on my cblog a while back. Great series, but brutally hard.

ParaParaKing: It's Shiren 3. (Or Shiren-San. HA! HA! HA!) Still some Atlus surprises yet, though. :)

I tried the DS game once. I didn't make it past the first dungeon.

Now if they announced a Wii sequel of Izuna...

Word to the Wise!

This port of Shiren 3 on the Wii, while using most of the same mechanics as the Shiren the Wanderer DS game is actually a LOT more user friendly. In all honesty it's a lot closer to the Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon games in that:

1) Your characters have persistent levels throughout the main story.
2) The game is made of some 30 small dungeons, most under 10 levels (so never a need to backtrack that much).
3) There is even an option to disable one of the KEY aspects of the Shiren series, that being the losing of everything in your pack when you're defeated in a dungeon.

So while this was a bit of a bummer for me, a hardcore fan of the original game, fear not fellow hardcore folk, the post story dungeons are still nasty as all heck with lots of new twists not seen in the DS version.
