I managed to score interviews with some pretty amazing game developers at this year's E3, but nothing topped the opportunity to speak with Koji Igarashi, producer of Castlevania series since 1997. Igarashi-san was single-handedly responsible for bringing the series back from the dead with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, one of the most positively reviewed (and consistently ported) games in history. Since then, TigerMan has not only made attempts to bring the series to 3D with games like Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, but has also been smart enough to keep the series close to it's roots like with the fully 2D Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. Thanks to Igarashi, the Castlevania series remains current and respectable, not something many 20+ year old series can claim.

Igarash-san is continuing down the road of simultaneous experimentation and loyalty to series heritage with Castlevania: Judgment, an all-star Castlevania fighting game, and Castlevania: Order of Ecclasia, a traditional 2D action/RPG/Platformer, both set to drop this year. I was tempted to just talk with the guy about all his favorite games, what he thinks of games as a medium, and all that other high-minded BS that feels so good to toss at intelligent game developers. But I knew that the reason he was at E3 was to promote his new games, so unfortunately that's pretty much what I stuck to. Despite being more star-struck than Chris Farley, I did manage to throw a couple of curveballs his way towards the end, which he easily knocked out of the park.

Thanks again for the interview, TigerMan, and please don't have Branden fired. He's right, Order of Ecclesia is really a lot like Simon's Quest, only more awesome.

Awesome.

...also seeing video of Castlevania: Judgement, hearing him talk about it, and the word "Powerstone" just moved my interest in that game from 1 whip, to 6 whips (out of 10 whips).

Honestly, what the hell is a one-on-one action game if its not a fighting game. Don't give me that Power Stone crap either. That's also a fighting game.

Haha, nice dubbing on the "Order of 'ECCLESIA'" there. I hate that word and can't say it right either.

Hehe, he sure is trying to sell that Wii game hard. Tough sell, tough crowd. Good luck sir.

Nice array of different questions makes for a good interview.

I kept calling it "Order of Iglesias" instead, just because I can imagine an Iglesias, but have no fuckign clue what an Ecclasia is. TigerMan didn't seem to care, but the Konami rep standing by with a stop watch to be sure the interview didn't go over my 20 minutes got pissed.

"E-CLAY-SEE-UHHHhh!" he'd say, and felt like I had to repeat after him nice and loud in order to make them happy.

And I apologize for the short length of this interview. There were other questions I asked Igarashi-san, like about online modes for Iglesias and what not, but he said he could remember.

Who was doing Igarashi's dubbing? Bit of a mush-mouth, IMO. Open your mouth! Enunciate! Cool interview. You were busy beavers, at E3.

First, I want to retract all the things I said about Judgment after hearing it compared to Powerstone. Second, where do I go to show my support for a 2D Castlevania on consoles? I'm talking a full on $30 title worth getting my hopes up for.

Moot Button, I would buy Bionic Commando Rearmed and Mega Man 9. They seem to be the biggest examples of the kind of game that TigerMan isn't so sure will make money on home consoles. If they brin gin the dough, hopefully he will get the O.K. from Konami to make the ultimate 2D action RPG/Platformer.

If you have a Wii, you can also get Wario Land: Shake It and Super Paper Mario (which you should probably do anyway, as they are both worth buying).
