E3 08: Ultimate achievement unlocked! Final Fantasy XIII coming to the Xbox 360 photo

I would love to have been a fly on the wall during the Microsoft/Square-Enix meeting when it was decided that Final Fantasy XIII would also be coming to the Xbox 360 and not remain a PlayStation 3 exclusive. Seriously, how did this happen?

For years, Sony has been banking on releasing FFXIII and reaping all the numerous sales benefits in return. Well, now it’s official: the next chapter in the revered Final Fantasy series is coming to the Xbox 360.

During the Microsoft press conference, everyone and their mothers went crazy once they played the trailer from the game and made the big announcement. Honestly, I didn’t think something like this would ever happen.

I still have high hopes for Sony and their growing list of exclusives -- don’t ignore the power of God of War III -- but this is a pretty huge bombshell. What do you all think? Stunned? Surprised? Saddened?

This is disappointing, it doesn't really affect me negatively but it does inspire a facepalm. I wonder how much money this took.

I'm not really interested in FFXIII, in fact I'm more interested in the still-exclusive FF Versus XIII. But I don't think anyone can deny that this is incredible news, and probably one of the biggest stories we will see this week. If this excites me at all, it's because of the schadenfreude Sony is now getting.

Is it sad that I'm still interested in the PS3 though?

It's still going to be exclusive to the PS3 in Japan... the only place this would've made a BIG difference for M$.

I wonder how much this cost Microsoft, or if it was solely a SE decision. Doesn't matter anyways, I just hope it won't affect the game at all.

Hmmmm...

Surprised? Not at all. Sony screwed up big time from the gate. Why should Square with it's flagship title have to suffer!? They have to make money as well! Remember its the games that sell the console...

And so what if it goes multi-platform? At the end of the day, doesn't this just make life better for everyone?

I was going to get a PS3 soon but now what's the point? I'll just wait for MGS 4 to come out on xbox if I don't borrow a friend's for a week and beat it, and buy a $200 PS3 when the next Team Ico game comes out.

Reading this kinda makes me think: cheap port.

I don't know. I think I'm gonna wait for the reviews to come out (3 years from now) before I decide whether I buy a PS3 to play the game or just buy it for 360.

Well, Im still buying a PS3 for some Online Play and Afrika.

Not that I won't have my 360 prepped for some Gaming, I just won't be playing on Live as much because I don't like the community.

Free Netflix might change that though.....

Holy shit! Thats it i'll have to get a 360, open it up, run a water cooler through it and hope I can get a decent optical drive on it.

Seriously that is a T.K.O. for Sony....who had the better hardware...im depressed I will go work on my doom metal project and buy an elite 360 now...

You'll have a long wait for MGS4 to go the 360 GrayFox. Sony practically own the rights to MGS.

This wasn't a competition, per se. But this game was what made me a bit hesistant to buy a 360. All I really wanted that was coming for the PS3 and not the 360 was FFXIII. Now I'm fine and I'll be ordering myself a 60GB 360 in early August.

not going to lie. in addition to God of War and the next Team Ico game, FFXIII was one of the games i bought a PS3 for. i'm assuming i'm not alone. in this, the news of it going to 360 as well hurts a little. i'll still get it for the PS3, but damn... Sony, how did you let this happen?

Very happy about this. Missing out on MGS4 at launch was heart ache enough :)

Now the second reason I wanted a PS3 is now no longer an issue!

Though to be honest . . . I lost interest in XII really easily.

I dunno. Feeling the reality of it all, its comes off as kind of meh. Also, Versus is still PS3 only, and that titles looks infinitely cooler than what I've seen of regular XIII

I wasn't a huge fan of the newer FF's anyways, but I know a lot of people are. I'm looking at it more from the viewpoint that MS just stole a huge exclusive game from Sony, which then hurts the PS3's sales points if that's the only reason people wanted a PS3.

Wow. If 360 gets MGS4 (people won't care if it's on six discs), then aside from a few games (GoW 3, Killzone and Resistance 2), Sony is boned.

To think, I was holding out for FF13 to get a PS3.

OMG. MGS 4 and GoW 3 are now the main reasons I want a PS3. But I still want one so much, as I just hate Microsoft's way of doing things. They care little for their fanbase, their customer service is APPALLING, and at times it doesn't feel they care for their customerbase at all. It's just money grabbing the whole time. + I'd prefer to play FF on a Playstation.....it won't feel right on the 360. Still good news, I'll buy it on 360 if I don't have a PS3 by then.

@ Jim, so far only Lost Odyssey and Infinite Undiscovery are exclusive to 360, while PS3 has White Knight Story and FF13 Versus. All other games are multiplatform or porting later.

At the same time this is a good PR coup for Microsoft, it will be interesting to see if this has any immediate impact on console sales.

I'm guessing Square-Enix will be delighted if FFXIII manages to launch in all major territories by holiday season 2009. If that's the case, this looks more like bragging rights at the moment than a big selling point to most consumers who don't already own one of the two systems.

I would also love to know when Sony found out about the deal. If Sony found out before Microsoft's announcement this morning, and they didn't leak it to the press beforehand to take the wind out of Microsoft's sails, they have the most inept PR department I can imagine.

Exclusivity is definitely going to go the way of the dodo if production costs and times keep getting worse. There were 4 Final Fantasy *canon* titles within ~4 years back in the PS1->PS2 era (1997-2001, FF7-FF10)... How long have they been working on FF13 again?

I heard the 360 version will have fewer frames but more pixels and the PS3 version will upscale your living room.

@DarkTravesty: Won't work. I already have about 13GB of data/games on my 360 and there's no way in hell I'm paying more than 50% of the cost of my console (even higher % with the price drop) for a new HDD that only holds 120GB (perhaps if it was 500GB, like what I can get on an eSATA HDD for the same price). Proprietary devices for teh lose.

It's a bad thing for ps3 people because it could've been a BETTER game. Resources could've been used to make the game better, but instead those will go to earning more money -_-.
