Sony had to react to Microsoft's shocking coup eventually, and Tretton has stepped up to voice his disappointment over Final Fantasy XIII being stripped of exclusivity status. Claiming that Microsoft "curried favor" with Square-Enix, the Sony boss talked moneyhats and the future of exclusive games.
"I guess disappointed is clearly an appropriate term," stated Tretton during a Q&A session. "I think Microsoft has spent the majority of their money on trying to curry favor with third parties ... I think software companies look and say 'there's no check big enough for us to do exclusive development' ... I think it's going to be harder and harder to have third-party exclusives as we move forward." You think an awful lot, Jack.
Final Fantasy XIII was arguably the biggest feather in Sony's cap going into E3, and was clearly something that the company hadn't looked to counter with its own press conference the day after the revelation. Sony's long term solution is to concentrate on first party games, and Tretton states that internal development is undertaken by half of Sony's worldwide employee base.
At this rate, Sony is clearly entrenching itself and digging in for the long haul. For the fast-paced games industry, however, this has led to a fairly dismal showing from the PlayStation camp. Will things change in a few years? If Sony's plan is indeed to quietly work internally and unleash a slew of its own games at a later date, then maybe the tortoise will indeed win the race. Until that hypothetical day, The 'Soft is clearly going to be smug for quite a while.
Final Fantasy XIII was arguably the biggest feather in Sony's cap going into E3
WAIT, so having a feather in your cap is bad? I thought that would mean something amazing happened.
eternalplayer:
I think you misunderstand. It was a feather in Sony's cap going into E3, meaning before MS' announcement.
oh, thanks for clearing that up Jim. I don't think I would like to live in a world where feathers in caps are something to be look down upon
the truth is that if every game were cross platform, sony would prolly be winning the console war- as it is most people that own a 360 don't own it because they love the console- more because they love the library-
I love that he brings up Microsoft paying off companies to gain favor. I'm sure Sony didn't give 1 shilling to Konami during their MGS4 development.
Also, I felt bad for Tretton during the press conference, not because of the content of the show (the LBP/powerpoint was awesome) but because he was out there almost the whole time by himself giving a long winded speech. I just thought "man, I'd hate to be up there for 2 hours reading a teleprompter" They don't have another executive that can come out and do some of presenting?
Oh Jack is going to shit when MGS4 for 360 is announced.
"the truth is that if every game were cross platform, sony would prolly be winning the console war- as it is most people that own a 360 don't own it because they love the console- more because they love the library-"
And LIVE, and achievements, and not paying £279.99 because Sony forced a format I don't want or need into the console, the list could go on but you get the picture.
Personally, I would love to see the day where there aren't any exclusive games. I don't buy all this "Exclusive means better optimised", that should be possible regardless.
Exclusives are a way for publishers to earn huge sums of money so manufacturers can try to bump up console sales. Exclusivity never benefits the consumer unless you like spending an extra few hundred of your local currency to play a handful of games.
Can we just kill the PS3 and move onto the PS4 already?
I have faith that Sony will bounce back from this loss.
I have faith that ps4 will the greatest system ever
That picture makes me laugh so hard. XD
Xbox does not get "Final Fantasy Versus XIII" so they are missing out. What if new final fantasy game such as ff7 or new one that does not come out at 360? So I still don't prefer 360 just because it a little cheap depends (only system), pay for online,high price hdd, unreliable(Red Ring), and ff13 more than 1 disc. It seems like a big xbox 360 trap until a big game that does not end up for future FF game.
Screw Tretton, people at Sony aren't allowed to talk about disappointment.
I highly doubt that Sony didn't know about FFXIII going to MS prior to E3.
Yea loki I agree, but you never really know for sure. FF13 was a major trump card for Sony to sell more systems, and I'm sure it hurt, but they should be able to do well even with this exclusive title being lost. God of War 3 is on deck and Little Big Planet has me super psyced.
Isn't, ya know, Sony's fault for not paying SE more to stay exclusive?
Also, I agree with ArrestedDeveloper.
Whether they're trying to soothe the hurt by pointing out that FFXIII Versus is still a PS3 exclusive they have to know that moving forward the franchise that is FF will stop being exclusive and that means any future Versus-type games. The only way for Square-Enix to turn back the clock will be if FFXIII doesn't sell well on the 360 when its released in NA and Europe. I would say 1 million total units for the 360 for the two regions combined would count as a success.
I like how Jack said they have more exclusive games than anyone else, yet (if I recall correctly) last year he explicitly said that they don't buy exclusivity. Something's amiss there, because I don't think developers are chomping at the bit to exclusively develop for Sony.
Anyway, more Captain Obvious. This really is a kick in the balls for Sony. This and MGS4 are/were their only huge, huge, mega-blockbuster games.
I agree with Loki, it's absolutely naive to think that Sony didn't know about their loss of exclusivity. I'm sure SE was legally bound to inform Sony.
And LIVE, and achievements, and not paying £279.99 because Sony forced a format I don't want or need into the console, the list could go on but you get the picture.
1. Software can always be updated and features added without having to spend any money on the client end. Hardware, on the other hand, costs a lot to update. Especially proprietary crap.
2. You laugh off Blu-ray, but seriously you're an idiot for doing so.
3. Your list can't go on, because the advantages MS had were a) Releasing 1 year before the PS3; b) Having lots of games that the target audience liked; c) Having XBL. Nothing else is on the list since in the last year it has dwindled away and will continue to do so. The only reason the 360 will remain strong is because of item (a), though.
[b]Personally, I would love to see the day where there aren't any exclusive games. I don't buy all this "Exclusive means better optimised", that should be possible regardless.

So, let me get this straight, you would love to see the day when there is no competition between consoles or games at all? When the PS3 is relegated to just a blu-ray player because the 360, having the higher market piercing value at this time (primarily due to releasing prior to the PS3), becomes the standard for gaming? Having asked those questions, how the heck do you think we've gotten to the point where more than one gaming console can make it big in the market today if not due to exclusive franchises? Honestly, do you really think that Nintendo would be the powerhouse it is if all of the Mario, Zelda, and Metroid games were made for Sony and MS products as well?
I'm pretty sure Square Enix's decision to bring FFXIII to the 360 was more of a business decision on their part. They need to double their audience because the game is fuckin' expensive to make.
And honestly, I don't care if anybody "curries favor." If Sony doesn't buy exclusivity, that's their problem. If I'm getting more games on my 360 or PS3 thanks to favor-currying, I honestly couldn't care less. Just let me play some games.
I own a PS3 and I still get to play FFXIII so I am happy...:)
@Sharpless:
I think he meant exclusives developed by first and second party devs like Insomniac, Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch.
And of course Jack is dissappointed. I was dissapointed as well after the initial announcement because I thought SE would have to "water down" the title to make it play fair on both consoles but since I read that the PS3 version is going to be shipped first in Japan, then development will begin on the 360, I feel confident that SE will deliver a quality product for the PS3 and hopefully for the 360 as well.
One step closer to the One Console future.
Now the question is, which of my consoles will get to enjoy it? I think I remember the PS3 calling dibs...
Hey, guys. STFU... AJPG?
@mix -- you're doing it wrong. You're supposed to yell and spit until you turn blue -- what with this level-headedness?
@whormongr - Huh? Really? You can't possibly believe that...Do you love your PS3 because it is a PS3, or because it has what you want on it? I hate to flame here, but that has to be one of the dumbest fucking things I have ever read on the entire internet. I didn't read any further, so hopefully Jimpressionable Sterling and the lot here have ripped you a new one...
I didn't buy a 360 because I love it, I didn't buy a PS2 or a DreamCast, or an Xbox or a Game Cube because I loved it...I bought it to play video games on. Did you get an unannounced model that has a vagina on it? Does your hair hurt? Can you ever love me like your PS3? Can you get a Faux Hawk like Wardrox?
I need answers.
Ocified with the response that makes my sides hurt :p
@darkair
What the fuck.
2 FF games on PS2 shipped on a single disc and now you're spoiled on the concept. Was it just breaking your ass to pop in those other discs for FFVII or VIII? IX must've just been torture.
Multidisc games do not break your gameplay. Does it suck? Yeah, kinda, but it's tolerable. It's not as if you're going to be in the middle of a fucking battle and required to pop in disk 2, and then back to disc 1 at the end of the battle. Christ sakes.
@Sharpless
sony doesn't buy exclusives but they do have many first party software developers which equals more exclusives
Sharpless: Was he talking about third party exclusives or titles exclusive to the platform? If Trenton was talking all PS3 exclusives he may very well have been telling the truth. If he was only counting quality exclusives then it is definitely true.
Amid all the microsoft fanboying (how is such a thing even possible?) that goes on around the Internets people seem to forget that Sony has by far the strongest first and second party lineup this generation. microsoft basically has nothing and clearly Nintendo has lost it since they can't even make a good Mario game anymore.
@hpv
You should be a fiction novel writer because that was a great fictional short story!
Ehh. Microsoft had a lot of bad games last year(Halo 3[fun, mediocre at best], Mass Effect[HUGE letdown], BioShock was the only good one but you saw what happened to that). This year looks like more of the same. Gears 1 was nothing special(well it did have lots of gray, covering, and throwing grenades in holes). Gears 2 looks enticing though. Fable 2 still looks iffy Fable 1 was very generic. The only 360 exclusive still exclusive is DOAX2, the best 360 game(besides Ikaruga). Dead Rising Wii sorta gets rid of the first good 360 exclusive game. I am fan this Metal Gear and Ratchet & Clank on the triple though.
Fair enough.
wam righgt in the kisser sony
wow... yes thats what i have to say about one of the posts i just read *shivers*, i mean i love to complain but calling BioShock a better game than Halo 3 or even Mass Effect, thats some serious WTF!?!...
take a game for what it is, is that so bloody hard?
and i agree with all those against exclusive games; they should just make a game to the best of the console's ability and let each individual pick what system they want, and if you have a favourite system, go ram it up your arse and stop thinking your opinion is valid
and yes the PS3 would be great if it had a decent price compared to its availible games; it boasts some amazing abilities with its super hardware, less boasting more product - then i'd gladly spend $700 with warranties on a PS3 just like i did with my xbox360
Companies pay for exclusivity. They have to, only because a game developer will lose money if they don't release their title on all platforms. This is how things have always worked in the past, and just because MS "paid off" the people that are making the games that everyone wants, it doesn't mean that they did something wrong -- it only means that they are playing to win.
Winning costs money, sadly, and everyone in this industry is out to win.
It's funny how many people act like FFXIII is not coming out for the Playstation. Just because it's no longer exclusive, doesn't mean it won't be coming out for the Playstation3.
People forget about personal preference. I prefer the Playstation controller. My friends prefer the Playstation console, this leads to me having tons of friends on PSN, and only a few on LIVE. This perpetuates the desire for me to buy games on the Playstation because I am comfortable there, and I have friends there.
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who is this way. Only fanboys should think that "everyone would buy a 360 and it's games once they try them." It's just not the case.
