Sony had to react to Microsoft's shocking coup eventually, and Tretton has stepped up to voice his disappointment over Final Fantasy XIII being stripped of exclusivity status. Claiming that Microsoft "curried favor" with Square-Enix, the Sony boss talked moneyhats and the future of exclusive games.
"I guess disappointed is clearly an appropriate term," stated Tretton during a Q&A session. "I think Microsoft has spent the majority of their money on trying to curry favor with third parties ... I think software companies look and say 'there's no check big enough for us to do exclusive development' ... I think it's going to be harder and harder to have third-party exclusives as we move forward." You think an awful lot, Jack.
Final Fantasy XIII was arguably the biggest feather in Sony's cap going into E3, and was clearly something that the company hadn't looked to counter with its own press conference the day after the revelation. Sony's long term solution is to concentrate on first party games, and Tretton states that internal development is undertaken by half of Sony's worldwide employee base.
At this rate, Sony is clearly entrenching itself and digging in for the long haul. For the fast-paced games industry, however, this has led to a fairly dismal showing from the PlayStation camp. Will things change in a few years? If Sony's plan is indeed to quietly work internally and unleash a slew of its own games at a later date, then maybe the tortoise will indeed win the race. Until that hypothetical day, The 'Soft is clearly going to be smug for quite a while.

WAIT, so having a feather in your cap is bad? I thought that would mean something amazing happened.
I think you misunderstand. It was a feather in Sony's cap going into E3, meaning before MS' announcement.
Also, I felt bad for Tretton during the press conference, not because of the content of the show (the LBP/powerpoint was awesome) but because he was out there almost the whole time by himself giving a long winded speech. I just thought "man, I'd hate to be up there for 2 hours reading a teleprompter" They don't have another executive that can come out and do some of presenting?
And LIVE, and achievements, and not paying £279.99 because Sony forced a format I don't want or need into the console, the list could go on but you get the picture.
Personally, I would love to see the day where there aren't any exclusive games. I don't buy all this "Exclusive means better optimised", that should be possible regardless.
Exclusives are a way for publishers to earn huge sums of money so manufacturers can try to bump up console sales. Exclusivity never benefits the consumer unless you like spending an extra few hundred of your local currency to play a handful of games.
Also, I agree with ArrestedDeveloper.
Anyway, more Captain Obvious. This really is a kick in the balls for Sony. This and MGS4 are/were their only huge, huge, mega-blockbuster games.
1. Software can always be updated and features added without having to spend any money on the client end. Hardware, on the other hand, costs a lot to update. Especially proprietary crap.
2. You laugh off Blu-ray, but seriously you're an idiot for doing so.
3. Your list can't go on, because the advantages MS had were a) Releasing 1 year before the PS3; b) Having lots of games that the target audience liked; c) Having XBL. Nothing else is on the list since in the last year it has dwindled away and will continue to do so. The only reason the 360 will remain strong is because of item (a), though.

So, let me get this straight, you would love to see the day when there is no competition between consoles or games at all? When the PS3 is relegated to just a blu-ray player because the 360, having the higher market piercing value at this time (primarily due to releasing prior to the PS3), becomes the standard for gaming? Having asked those questions, how the heck do you think we've gotten to the point where more than one gaming console can make it big in the market today if not due to exclusive franchises? Honestly, do you really think that Nintendo would be the powerhouse it is if all of the Mario, Zelda, and Metroid games were made for Sony and MS products as well?
And honestly, I don't care if anybody "curries favor." If Sony doesn't buy exclusivity, that's their problem. If I'm getting more games on my 360 or PS3 thanks to favor-currying, I honestly couldn't care less. Just let me play some games.
I think he meant exclusives developed by first and second party devs like Insomniac, Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch.
And of course Jack is dissappointed. I was dissapointed as well after the initial announcement because I thought SE would have to "water down" the title to make it play fair on both consoles but since I read that the PS3 version is going to be shipped first in Japan, then development will begin on the 360, I feel confident that SE will deliver a quality product for the PS3 and hopefully for the 360 as well.
Now the question is, which of my consoles will get to enjoy it? I think I remember the PS3 calling dibs...
I didn't buy a 360 because I love it, I didn't buy a PS2 or a DreamCast, or an Xbox or a Game Cube because I loved it...I bought it to play video games on. Did you get an unannounced model that has a vagina on it? Does your hair hurt? Can you ever love me like your PS3? Can you get a Faux Hawk like Wardrox?
I need answers.
What the fuck.
2 FF games on PS2 shipped on a single disc and now you're spoiled on the concept. Was it just breaking your ass to pop in those other discs for FFVII or VIII? IX must've just been torture.
Multidisc games do not break your gameplay. Does it suck? Yeah, kinda, but it's tolerable. It's not as if you're going to be in the middle of a fucking battle and required to pop in disk 2, and then back to disc 1 at the end of the battle. Christ sakes.
sony doesn't buy exclusives but they do have many first party software developers which equals more exclusives
Amid all the microsoft fanboying (how is such a thing even possible?) that goes on around the Internets people seem to forget that Sony has by far the strongest first and second party lineup this generation. microsoft basically has nothing and clearly Nintendo has lost it since they can't even make a good Mario game anymore.
You should be a fiction novel writer because that was a great fictional short story!
take a game for what it is, is that so bloody hard?
and i agree with all those against exclusive games; they should just make a game to the best of the console's ability and let each individual pick what system they want, and if you have a favourite system, go ram it up your arse and stop thinking your opinion is valid
and yes the PS3 would be great if it had a decent price compared to its availible games; it boasts some amazing abilities with its super hardware, less boasting more product - then i'd gladly spend $700 with warranties on a PS3 just like i did with my xbox360
Winning costs money, sadly, and everyone in this industry is out to win.
