E3 08: The next Wii Remote may include MotionPlus photo

As we revealed to you previously, MotionPlus is a nifty little tool for the Wii Remote that actually gives the sense of 3D awareness. Recently at an E3 roundtable, Nintendo designer Katsuya Eguchi was asked if the MotionPlus would always be an attachment to the bottom of the Wii Remote. His response was nothing but formal.

As to looking at whether or not it will be an attachment or built in - we're always looking at how hardware should evolve and where we should take it.

When Eguchi was asked to reveal more insight into the matter, he said, “it might be good to keep it as an attachment we only use for certain software.” That statement directly corresponds with a remark made earlier in the roundtable about keeping the attachment casual. Apparently, the casual market is afraid of having their motions tracked by a controller, even though they swing their hand around like the Wii Remote is actually doing that anyway.

The one thing Nintendo could do for me with the attachment is to make sure it never gets stuck somewhere irretrievable in my couch. Controllers, remotes, and even game boxes are easy to dig out between the cushions. Small devices like the MotionPlus or Rumble Packs quickly become a burden to me. Unfortunately, it appears that my couch problems may be permanent if Eguchi’s relation to the casual market is any indication.

I have no idea what this article is supposed to be saying. Will it be sold as part of the new Wiimote or not? Why the hell would casuals care about anything except how to throw a frisbee in the new WiiSports?

I am.. confused. Your title clearly says "the next Wii Mote may include motion pluss"

Yet one of the quote citations of any factual information is it might be good to keep it as an attachment we only use for certain software.

Basically, the entire article supports the exact opposite of your headline :)

Just make a new Wiimote, build in the rubber grip, include the MotionPlus "fix", make the buttons more like the classic controller... and bundle it with a lightsaber game. Is that too much to ask?

Wii pay so much for your crap already, the attachment is just another pain in our collective ass.

Nintendo should just do what Sony did with dual analogues and then with the dual shock. Most developers will then use it rather than just a few.

@irvine_frost: There's a passthrough port on the bottom of the thing. Seriously, why do people keep asking this, can they not see the pictures?

I already have 4 "conventional" wii remotes, I'd rather just upgrade them than have to buy new remotes. If someone somehow sends one of my remotes into a fishtank, well maybe then I'll consider buying the upgraded remote.

@Sargonas

The quote you used has the word might. Implying that it might be a bad idea to keep it as an attachment as well. Also, the other quote in the article seems to hint that they are thinking about building it in:

As to looking at whether or not it will be an attachment or built in - we're always looking at how hardware should evolve and where we should take it.

I for one think Nintendo will do it eventually. Just look at the DS Lite or the many incarnations of the GBA. Nintendo is not afraid of releasing new hardware. With Sony and Microsoft launching new SKUs left and right I think it would be fine for Nintendo to release a new version of the Wiimote with MotionPlus built in.

Just do a pack-in like Wii-play, new improved wii-mote INCLUDED with upgrades such as rubberized grip so there would be a need for the wii-mote condom. And RECHARABLE BATTERIES, since it could drain regular batteries faster. Etc. Etc.

More ways to steal money: CONFIRMED!

It is kinda neat how it tracks in "real" time even though that can be deceiving. Technically you could say it tracks in real time even though there is a second delay as hey, it's working in real time baby!

Honestly that is always how I thought the Wiimote worked until I rearranged my house... I just realized the only Wii games I own are playable with Gamecube controllers.

Wow. Just. Wow.

Maybe they should find a way to utilize this add-on with the literal fuckton of games that utilize peripherals and may happen to control better because of the technology now that those peripherals are useless if the game wants to utilize the new tech. I'm thinking of anything using the wheel attachment and the zapper games, btw.

The wiimote should have worked like that in the first place. If it costs more than $5, fuck Nintendo

If the wiimote worked like that in the first place it would have had the price of this add-on on it already, posibly costing even more given how these kinds of technologies get cheaper over time.
