E3 08: Testing out Nintendo's WiiSpeak with the voice of Mario, Charles Martinet

9:43 PM on 07.17.2008, Nick Chester 24 comments

     Animal Crossing

Taking a different approach to the voice chat solution for the Wii, Nintendo announced the WiiSpeak peripheral that will ship along with the forthcoming Animal Crossing: City Folk this holiday.

The small microphone that sits on top of the Wii sensor bar will pick up anyone's voice in the room, relaying the audio through your television's speakers. This, according to Nintendo, is to encourage a more inclusive experience. Whether or not that will be the case -- or if it'll just be a general annoyance to everyone in your household -- remains to be seen.

I had a chance to test out WiiSpeak with Nintendo's Charles Martinet (acting as Mario). I sat in a small area with a Nintendo rep who played Animal Crossing while I asked Martinet  (or Mario, if you're into make-believe) questions about various fish he had caught, or if he had gotten rowdy at any industry parties the night before.

Between Mario, the PR rep, and myself, we had a pretty nice three-way conversation going on. I was able to hear Martinet clearly through the television's speakers, and as far as I was able to tell, he was clearly understanding me, even though I was a good five or six feet away from the WiiSpeak. While I'm not entirely sold on the method, it's good to know that the hardware seems to work as well (if not better) than you'd expect.

The Concept sounds good but i prefer the privacy of a headset i don't see why Nintendo didn't make a headset that attaches to the bottom of the wii controller. That seems like a better idea to me i wouldn't want a microphone picking up all of the background noise in my place.

Well, that must have been uh.. entertaining, to say the least.

I'd prefer a headset, but it's still good to know that this works nicely.

Talking to the entire rooms keeps all the bad men who want to touch me in my special place away.

Boy, I can't wait to chat with 12 year old girls! They had better implement this with some awesome games. As for a headset, a third party will probably make one eventually.

im calling some annoying situations in the future with that. its bad enough listening to one moron through his headset, imagine when the moron has his or her moronic friends over.

:(

Actually, the thing that I'M pretty excited about with WiiSpeak is something I read from another place. That WiiSpeak has been confirmed to work with The Conduit. And from seeing the control sensitivity and other settings video over on IGN, and confirmed 16 player multiplayer, this game is certainly pinging loudly on MY radar. With WiiSpeak it should just be even better. The only producer that I can imagine HV going with now is EA, to use the EA Nation online capacity and totally get away from friend codes (ala Heroes 2).

I'm still really hesitant on this. And if Animal Crossing is the only game to support this...meh.

for group online play this might be ideal though...

My roommate actually was able to sit down with Charles Martinet in a somewhat casual setting. She had him prank call people in her phone book using Mario's voice.

Yep, thats right. I've been told by Mario that hes slept with my mom.

How does it avoid picking up the sound coming from the television? That's already a big enough problem when people are using headsets and sitting well back from the TV and this thing is right next to the speakers.

It's still pretty half-assed, but I'm getting used to Nintendo operating that way, at this point. I wasn't really interested to begin with though, so ignore me.

Are you people fucking serious? We've all been bitching about a lack of voice chat for about a year, but when they give it to us, we keep complaining. Someone suggested a plug in mic for the Wiimote, bu everyone also complains about additional Wiimote accessories. Not only does a speaker suit Nintendo's style of games (except for the Conduit, all their chat games will probably be pretty family friendly, like Brawl), but this article states that it actually works well! I mean, the conference was terrible, but could we take the good with the bad, please?
