E3 08: Take a look at Resident Evil 5's online co-op mode in action

     Resident Evil

As you may have just heard, Resident Evil 5 is getting an online co-op mode. The video, which you can check out after the break, starts off with Chris Redfield going through the African village. Chris gets to a point in the level where he can't get through by himself. So at this point, the online co-op mode is revealed introducing the new girl, Sheva Alomar, as a playable character.

Sheva makes her way to Chris and with his help, she crosses over to an adjacent building and continues on with the level. Sheva runs into some enemies and as she's taking them on, Chris is sniping them from his position. Sheva then makes her way to a blocked door that she unlocks to let Chris through. The video presentation ends with a new variation of the Chainsaw mini-boss from Resident Evil 4.

Hit the jump for the video and some questions on the co-op mode.

As a long time Resident Evil fan, I am excited for the co-op mode. Sure, the Outbreak series had co-op, but the Outbreaks never felt like a true Resident Evil game to me.

I am curious to see how the game will play out in just single-player. It looks like they're going to be emphasizing a lot of co-op type elements with the level design and the enemies. If that's the case, will Sheva be computer controlled when no one is around to take her place? March 2009 can't come soon enough.

ok RE guys. It's time to get with the new century - having strafe in your control scheme makes these sort of games SO MUCH EASIER TO PLAY. Also, did you see the sniping? Looked awful.

pretty graphics though.

I was cautious about getting hyped for RE 5, but after this I can't help myself. I need this game now.

but do I get to kill WHITE people? actually looking forward to this though I can't decide which zombie romp I'm looking forward to more, RE5 or Left4Dead..

Sniping wasn't awful just needs a tweak in the sensitivity department. I just hope co op doesn't make this too easy, I want to be scared when I play this. RE 4 was able to do it well so here is hoping for moar success.

@Antlerbot: Strafing is only necessary when the level of difficulty calls for it. RE series hasn't needed it yet to my knowledge.

As far as online 2-player co-op, I said it in the previous post, but local two-player co-op would have made a lot more sense IMHO.

I'm sure there will be plenty of time where the two characters are split up, allowing for some scripted scares or just the willies from isolation.

What the...those zombies aren't black...what kind of white supremacist game is this?!

This is so like it is comming late 2009.
Those stupid enemies bodies, falling through scenery, dissaperiang as usually and being aniamted rather than euthoric or even ragdollish.
Look completely meh but graphic were quite nice.

So I'm a tad confused. Is co-op only at certain points when "Chris needs her?" Because if that is the case, I will be highly disappointed (I mean how would that even work?) It has to be co-op throughout the whole game...right? :\

I would also like to know how the co-op works... is it the main mission or a seperate one that you specifically do online?

I wouldn't worry about the co op too much. Capcom have enough experience online that this should be easy to do. Plus they are building on knowledge from Biohazard 0.

Great video and I do want.

I'm a HUGE fan of RE4, and this is starting to look like it's gonna blow 4 away. The only thing I'm kind of bugged about is how the character animation --- mostly for the enemies --- looks EXACTLY the same as 4. I hope they add some variety to them before the final release.

Sweet how Sheva is lefty! More games need left-handed weapon. Gives the controls a more balanced feel.
