E3 08: Rumortoid: Next Halo game to be 'tactical shooter?' photo

One of the bigger, and juicier rumors we have been hearing before the onset of E3 2008 is that Bungie’s next Halo game will not be starring Master Chief. In fact, he may not even make an appearance. Today, Gamespot is reporting, with the help of a shadowy source person with "knowledge of the studio’s development,” that not only will the next Halo game lack the Chief, but it will also be a ‘cross between Ghost Recon and Gears of War.

The source goes on to unveil a few other tasty morsels of information. One alleged fact revealed is that this new Halo game will be a decidedly more violent take on the eternal war between Earth and the Covenant. Its action and tone is supposedly akin to those crazy Neil Blomkamp short films. The last thing mentioned is that the game is said to incorporate a squad-based cooperative mode that extends all the way through the single-player campaign.

The game is supposed to be revealed at E3 this year. As you can notice, it’s not included on Nick’s list so keep your fingers crossed and the Halo dream is alive. Personally, I would greatly enjoy getting away from Master Chief. His heroics, massive strength, and talkative nature really wear a person down after three games.

Quite honestly, I wouldn't be surprised. If there was a way to do high intensity say third person shooter for Halo, that would be really cool. I don't want to see another FPS

Yeah, what SnakeDude said. What a lot of people don't realize about the Halo series is that it really is a rich universe, with so many other characters an locations to work with. Since it's rumored to be a tactical shooter, I wouldn't be surprised if it were focused on the ODSTs, or on the Spartans while they were young, or even the other Spartans in Master Chief's squad, which were mysteriously absent from Halo 2 and 3.

Personally, I could imagine a tactical space shooter starring Captain Keyes (you know, before he was turned into a Flood and then punched through the face by the Master Chief), with huge spaceship battles. I think that could be cool.

I've read all of the Halo books, I finished First Strike just last week. Just so you know, ODST and Helljumpers are the same faction. Remember in Fall of Reach when John took out three of them in a boxing ring? And I believe that Dexter was saying that the Halo universe is vast and features a great storyline and awesome characters. I don't know what you read. But I want them to make Halo: Fall of Reach: The Video Game. That would be so awesome. That or play as an ODST during the battle of Reach. Fighting along with Spartans. Meeting Dr. Halsey. Damn, that would be a sweet game.

Wow, I don't know why I put they are the same faction. I meant they are the same soldiers. The ODST's nickname is the Helljumpers.

Halo has a far better storyline than the games let on <_<

A nice tactical shooter could be nice. I mean, it's halo, so sillies will buy it and think 'hey tactical shooters are alright, lets open our minds and allow creativity in the industry.'

Maybe.

this is all good news to me, a change of direction would be great, but at some point they surely have to make a halo 4, just for the legendary ending in halo 3...i mean wtf happens?

@Heretic:

Actueally Mr. bmdubya is correct. The Orbital Drop Shock Troopers have the general nickname of "Helljumpers", not just those under the command of Johnson.

Heretic, there is at least eleven Spartans left alive on Onyx. Five SPARTAN-IIIs i.e. Team Katana are stuck in those Slip-space pods and three SPARTAN-IIs and three SPARTAN-IIIs are on their feet.

as others have said the Halo has a pretty interesting universe that's been unexplored in the games

I would actually purchase a Halo game if it came remotely close to being a true cross between Ghost Recon and Gears. Make it third person and throw in some actual violence and personality (maybe even some character customization) and I will even pre-order it.

FUCK YES!!!!

Anyone who knows me knows my two favorite genres are tactical shooters and RPGs.

If Peter Jackson's Halo project turns out to be an RPG, I'll forgive MS for making Halo Wars. :D

If its anything like Ghost Recon series, I'd be all over it like white on rice, especially if it becomes more gritty war like. Its always felt too clean sci fi wise.

The real reason Halo never grew on my was because of the fps nature it employed. It was also quite ironic that the master chief is called such, but couldn't give any actual in game orders to npcs.

T-rav is right. "Helljumper" is a general nickname. Johnson does not have his own personal squad of ODSTs, beyond any that fall under his command.

Also, I don't want to talk about this.

No franchise could use a little sprucing up more than Halo. The series hasn't progressed much since the first game, and while H2 was still loads of fun, Halo 3 was stale in every way.

Out with the old!

What a shitty troll you are... I played (the real) Rainbow Six. I'm even into hardcore military sims like Operation Flashpoint (one of my all-time favourites). Still, I really enjoy the Halo games; all of them, actually. In fact, I wouldn't even be surprised if the majority of the previous commenters fall into the same category. Just because Halo also happens to be popular amongst frat boys doesn't mean all Halo players are lobotomised morons.

As for the idea of a tactical shooter in the Halo universe, I'm all for it. Lots of potential.

If the used an over the shoulder camera option, I'd be all over it. If it ends up being another Halo of any type with first person view, they better at least have co-op again or I'll pass without even thinking twice.

Still won't get me interested in the Halo franchise. Honestly, I have no doubts that someone else will make a better tactical shooter at about the same time as this is released, just like Halo 3/CoD4.
