E3 08: PSN to get movie and TV downloads tonight

E3 08: PSN to get movie and TV downloads tonight photo
     PS3

We don’t know the name for it yet, but PSN will be updated tonight to provide both movies and TV shows to eager consumers. The service will allow for complete downloads and rentals from announced partners Lionsgate, 20th Century Fox, Funimation, MGM, Warner Brothers and Sony Pictures. The best part is that the purchased media will be somewhat removable from the PS3. Patrons will be able to transport movies to their PSP, as well as their personal computers via USB.

The video service will be separated by a button on the main screen of the PSN store, which will then transport the user to lists broken down by companies or genre. Rental prices will range from $1.99 for a TV show to $5.99 for movies. Complete downloads will hit for either $9.99 or $14.99. High-definition will also be available, but only for some titles. There’s also no need to worry about how long downloads will take. Progressive downloading will be utilized by the new service, so users will be able to begin watching their movie almost immediately after purchase.

I wonder when we’ll see Robocop or Mortal Kombat? I mean, Cloverfield is great, but I need some cyborg or Johnny Cage action with my download service. If there was only a way to combine that love together.

This was a good move made. I have nothing constructive to say.

This would be cool if it wasn't done before... you know... like the xbox did a year or so ago?

Not everything is going to be new and innovative. It's a movie download service. It's functional. That's all it needs to be.

I'm curious... are a lot of people regular users of these video marketplaces? I'll check out free episodes of new tv series when they pop up on the XBL Marketplace, but I've never been inspired to pay for any of them.

Why is it that every time one company announces something the annoying fanboys arise and say stupid things. Are you too fucking blind to see it? If the users (you know the ones that actually own the console in question) are happy about something who are you to say it ain't cool? If companies stop doing stuff that is done before they can stop creating things right now. This concerns both Microsoft and Sony. As well as their fanboys.

Video games would be cool if they weren't already done before, you know, on the Magnavox Odyssey thirty-five years ago.

@Mxy

I rent pretty regularly from Xbox Live, and iTunes now that you mention it.

Renting from Live is slightly cheaper than Cablevision's video-on-demand, and the quality is better too. As long as you stay with standard definition, you can rent, let it buffer for a minute, and start watching.

I can't really imagine the PS3 version being too different. Same process, different selection I guess.

I might rent movies on this on a rainy day, but I can't see myself paying for TV. I also think I need to upgrade my Hard Drive as I start downloading more and more stuff.

Seems a little pricey to me. $6 to rent a movie? I can run down the street and rent a movie (new release) for under $2, or older releases for 2 for $1. $15 for a movie seems a bit high to me too. I just don't see the point of paying so much for movies, though maybe its just because I'm spoiled and get all of my movies used for $1-$2.50 from my local shop. I'll keep using the PS3 for games, and leave the movies and TV aspect off of my system.

Does anybody know if this is going to be available in canada? I'm thinking no, using the incredibly neutered movie "service" that's available here.

currently I use the "media server" functions on the PS3 to watch movies on my home network- when it comes down to it, I don't see myself using the ps3 to rent movies, but if they were to also set up a netflix service it would be cool since I already have netflix- but then PS online is free, so not as much room to gripe
