E3 08: Nintendo reveals new accessory, the Wii MotionPlus photo

Let the E3 surprises begin!

It looks like Nintendo is trying to take the wind out of Microsoft’s press conference sails -- currently going on as I type this -- by announcing a new, surprise Wii accessory: the Wii MotionPlus.

The new accessory plugs into the bottom of the Wiimote and offers true motion control in 3D space. From Nintendo’s Web site:

Nintendo's upcoming Wii MotionPlus accessory for the revolutionary Wii Remote controller again redefines game control, by more quickly and accurately reflecting motions in a 3-D space. The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player's arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion. Every slight movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their game play.

More information about Wii MotionPlus and hopefully some other new surprises will be discussed tomorrow morning at Nintendo’s very own press conference. Make sure you stick with Destructoid for all the latest E3 updates!

What do you think? Are you as surprised as we are about this news? What kind of games will most likely implement this new advanced technology?

Maybe the next Trauma Center will use it for brain surgery or something.

I'm with Chad. I guess I just don't have the desire to be cynical about every little facet of the hobby.

Maybe the existence of this thing speaks ill about the Wiimote as it exists now. Maybe not. As long as it yeilds positive results, I don't give two shits.

Meh.

Wiggle better? Seriously, Wiggle better Nintendo? Thats it? *sigh*

Whats next, a DS with a touchscreen that won't get scratched in the first 4 days?

So much for the "we'll announce something hardcore" looks like it will all center around pushing Wii sports 2 and making you pay for the complete controller after you beta tested it for over a year.

I knew this would happen if those motherfucking greedy cunts of Nintendo would get on top again.

I'm guessing this shit ships in the box with some new Zelda title that's going to be announced tomorrow.

This way it gets higher exposure and more people have one.

I am personally excited about this! I guess Its nintendo's version of the 'sixaxis' though. But Im not about to complain about improved hardware being released. At least I don't have to replace my remotes. I know Nintendo will probably bundle this with a game of its own but how great would it be if they offered it to LucasArts or something to make an exclusive lightsaber game for the console and sell with this. Third party sales +4 million.

There is no doubt in my mind though, that this was created to allow for better combat in an upcoming Nintendo release. Most likely Zelda, maybe Icarus.

I don't know why people are seeing this as such a bad thing. It's just another option- when we know the price, then we can talk.

Being pissed off about this is like being pissed off when Sony first released the Dualshock or Microsoft first released the S-controller. Maybe a better analogy would be when Nintendo first released the Rumble pak for the N64, since it's an add-on instead of entire controller replacement."

No. Rumbling and dualshock != more precise controls. It's more like they sold controllers without d-pads for 2 years and are now offering d-pad upgrades.

I really have to disagree with you, it's not at all the same. When you add rumble to a controller, it doesn't really affect what happens to the gameplay. It's nice, it giggles when certain events happen.

But when you add something that fundamentally changes the way the controller sends data to the console, this requires (usually) programmers to do a total re-write to the system of game mechanics that have been already established.

Also, imagine the team behind "No More Heroes," to do a sequel, NOW they have to incorporate this new control system AND create a complete new workaroaund so gamers without the MotionPLus can still play the game, and let's also not forget the super awesome on-screen prompts that show you how to do moves with the beam katana.

This pretty much changes everything in a very exciting way, but also adds a load of headaches for developers.

I really hope once this is out, nintendo doesn't drop the ball. Other wise it's 32x all over again.

If these aren't offered free to everyone who already bought the fucking system and controllers then it's a crock of shit. Maybe they should have focused on making the response on the Wiimotes 1:1 to begin with instead of nickel and diming everyone months later. Assholes.

Damm. Now ain't this post drowning in its own bitterness? People tend to not reason all that much sometimes. Let's just think for a while before posting and refrain from cursing and hating. Unless it's really necessary, in which case, please justify. Accordingly. Can't stress that enough.

Well, there's this thingy called technology. It changes. Everyday. Really. Maybe, and just maybe, Nintendo didn't have the know-how to create such a precise controller. Maybe they had the know-how, but hey, they were getting into unknown territory. I loved my Gamecube, still love it, but looking at its sales almost made me cry. Every company needs money. And Nintendo is making lots of it. Really. That's how capitalism works. Sometimes it's a bitch, but since the Soviet Union thing we don't seem to have much of a choice. Anyways, maybe at the Wii launch Nintendo had to be careful. It could have been a make-or-break, and they needed the money to pay people, things, and all. You know the drill. Nintendo lives ONLY of videogames. Let's not forget that. Maybe adding a second gyroscope would obey them to increase the pricetag of the Wii, which was already seemingly awful, specially with all apologies from increasing the price tag from 199 to 249.

And maybe, they had the know-how, but din't find it that relevant. People are buying the console, the games, everybody is happy. Yeah, it may be waggly, softcore, whatever. They're making their money(And hey, them making money means a happy Miyamoto with a Ferrari in his garage and a happy, trouble-free mind to make my new Zelda. So what the hell?). But then, suddenly, from the dark pits of Microsoft and Sony, there comes a howl:a terrible one, that foresees shadows over Nintendo's recently regained reign: MOTION CONTROL-A-PALOOZA. There's even a third party designing a Wiimote-ripoff(Yeah, sounds harsh, they're just the siderunners trying to get somewhere, but hey! The button layout is a painful ripoff). So they decide that, being it so probable that Microsoft and/or Sony would present at this E3 their innovative, groundbreaking, motion-sensitive controller, the time had come to give a boost to the actual controller. And hey, if it really works as well as they're saying it will, I'm all for it.

Nintendo didn't promise 1:1 control, as far as I remember. If they did, hell, I wouldn't have bought it anyway. My Wii has been providing me and my friends sh*tloads of fun, without 1:1 motion-capture. People are willing to shell out the money for a brand new "Wii controller" for the Xbox/PS3, but they whine and bitch for having to pay for an add-on that will not only be much more responsive, but also cheaper than the aforementioned possibility for the other consoles.

Yeah, paying for things suck. It would've been better if it was there on day one. But since then they had the time to perfect it and maybe develop some way to make its production cheaper. If it was there as the Wii became available for retail, we would've paid for it in the form of an increased price tag. If I can pay a little more for drastically improved gameplay, I will. Besides, ir's not like they're putting back anything that was removed. There were people comparing it to the SixAxis 3(I may be wrong about the numeral), which is a totally different situation. That, in my opinion, didn't deserve that much hating, anyways. Although it was kinda dumb.

Anyways, there are some really serious fanboyism cases around. I mean, it's okay to love or hate a company(pointless, although okay), just have the decency of making some sense out of it. Otherwise, it's just poking at people's noses. Videogame plays an important role in my life. I am a videogame enthusiast. Which may be kind of ridiculous. But it definitely doesn't beat the ridicule levels of a videogame enthusiast with a hatred-spilling heart.

Wow, smart move Nintendo1!! It's such a great idea to fragment your userbase.

Seriously, how many games are going to use this? You'll be cutting your userbase between the haves and have nots.

This is going ot go the road of the Zapper, Wii Wheel and Balance Board.

Anyone remember the N64 Rumble Pack and N64 Memory Expansion Pack?

...Why are so many people saying that this is what they "expected" in the beginning when the Wii came out? When did Nintendo even once promise 1:1 controls?

I followed the Wii launch down to a "T" and I don't remember that a single time, so I guess I'm the only one who didn't buy the Wii with false hopes.

Nintendo needs to launch this as a free pack-in on a game that makes killer use of it, and then sell additional units on the cheap. Someone posted a picture of the N64 RAM expansion, mistakenly characterizing it as a failure. Aside from the Dual Shock controller for PSX the RAM expansion is the only successful console add-on in history. Because it was relatively cheap standalone and they packed it in with their biggest game release that year.

I can't imagine what they could use to push this in the Fall. A new Wii-specific Zelda game would be perfect, but we won't be seeing that until at least 2010. It'll probably ship with Wii Play 2 or Link's Master Sword Training for $30.

So, it doesn't add new functionality, it just makes the existing functionality slightly better? Wow, what a value.

Really, I'm amazed that anyone expected the Wii to have 1:1 controls at all. That's not possible with ANY controller, because we live in 1:1:1 space. How exactly do you perceive depth while looking at a 2D TV screen?

The whole reason why we have so many waggle games and motion controls substituting digital buttons is because the spatial relationship between the 3D world and your 2D television is not that strong. Games that try to do "real" motions usually fail miserably. I thought people learned that lesson back in the 80's when Virtual Reality was supposed to take over the world.

In other words, prepare for more waggle. But, it'll be better waggle, right?

I guess Nintendo thought the original motion capacity (pointing, twisting and shaking) would cut it, but that's given rise to a few gems (MP3,SMG,RE:UC) and loads of crappy gimmicks. This can only be a good thing, and I doubt it will sell for more than $15. Can we all stop bitching about why the original Wiimote didn't have it, please? Each one would have cost you $80 or something.
