E3 08: Nintendo announces Animal Crossing:City Folk including WiiSpeak

This video has moved! Try our Destructoid HD Youtube channel Ready to finally join the legions of people enjoying talking to one another during gaming (what a CRAZY concept!!!)? Well, if you own an Xbox 360, you've been doing that for a while, but getting the new-fangled technology isn't for everyone, you know. At this morning's Nintendo Press Conference, Nintendo finally offcially announced Animal Crossing: City Folk, which looks like an excellent addition to the adorable series. It looks like you can do some new things, like get your hair done. Ok, great, that's cute. What else you got for me?

WiiSpeak, a small white device that is shaped like a half circle, will come packed with Animal Crossing: City Folk and will allow you to speak to your friends while you play the game. While I'd prefer a headset, I'm not going to complain about the ability to finally share playing a Wii game with other people and getting to hear their voices. I have to admit having this available to me makes me take gaming on the little white console a little more seriously as a shared gaming experience.

Despite all that, it's still just more Animal Crossing, and while it is a great game, we've all played it in various other incarnations. Are you excited for this new title, or were you hoping to see innovation beyond new peripherals?

Also, this game scares me more than Dead Space because of the potential to drown countless hours into it picking up apples.

I don't want to go down that road ever again.

It looks the same again :( I'm very disappointed, they took the GC/DS version and moved a few features into a new area. The actual town looks exactly the same. I await more details before I totally write it off though.

I actually think I'd prefer the WiiSpeak to a headset. I mean, the 360 headset usually gets a bit uncomfortable after a while and no wires to get tangled in. Mind you, if you had a large living room I suppose it would be a bit of a problem.

it's the same as the PS3 Eye camera what with background noise cancelling and being set on top of the television.

Animal Crossing? That's all they got? No Kid Icarus, Starfox, Metroid, or Kirby?

Horrible conference.

Well if it isn't Animal Crossing for the GC put together with Wild Worlds for the DS. Oh they added a town center where you can shop. Nintendo has the greatest expansion packs ever!

I freaking laughed my head off when he left that barber shop, all I can think of was "wtf, Mii?"

it's everything an Animal Crossing fan like me could want. but i'm a bit disappointed that the graphics aren't much improved over the Gamecube one. it's like hi-def wild world. the city is cool, but it's just like an "acre" big. hopefully there's some suprises they aren't letting us in on. Voice chat is a very welcome addition and it's AMAZING to have our holidays like halloween and new years back, but i hope we can experience events together with people like getting coffee and K.K.Slider.

but i don't expect that since they mentioned during the fishing contest at the conference that different fish appear on different wiis. man i wish i could get a cup of coffee with my friend (and more than 1 cup a day...).

i know i'm going to dump hundreds of hours into this no problem, but i'm not seeing much in terms of new things. Wild World introduced a lot, including the rolling landscape.

i'm just not seeing much forward movement this time.

WTF IS THIS SHIT? City Folk? I was thinking it'd be living in an actual city, like I'd go from a studio in hipster-dumpsville to a penthouse near the park? Like, I'd have to appeal to the Nooks Co-op board to move into a new place? And go to NooKEA to buy furniture? WTF is this shit? It's the exact same as Wide World except with a fountain and a hair stylist!

I never thought I'd get this pissed about Animal Crossing...

I predict I'll buy this game, play the hell out of it for the first few months, then never touch it again. Just like the other Animal Crossings. Glad to see they're finally including a voice chat solution, although it's a shame it didn't make it in time for Brawl or Mario Kart Wii.

Why does this game still look like an N64 game? The trees are 2D! TWO DEE! It's like they just don't give a shit. I'm all for cute graphics, but not DATED cute graphics.

This is not what I had in mind for our holiday game, Reggie.

I love Animal Crossing, the Gamecube version was one of my favorite games... I didn't like the DS version as much, mainly because of the scrolling world instead of the acres, I'm really disappointed that they went with the scrolling world in this version... :( I really hope they add a bunch of new stuff to this version or I pass over this, believe it or not. Hopefully it's not AC Wild World Wii.

You people say no innovation? I believe that in the DS version, you came to town in a TAXI. It is now a BUS. What are you people BLIND?

I'm really confused as to why being able to have the other people in the room with me converse with the people I'm playing games with is a good thing. I don't know how many times I play games with my roommate sitting next to me and how CONSIDERATE it is for the people I'm playing with to not hear every word he says.

Playing games with this Wii Speak thing is gonna result in kids yelling at their little brothers or their moms coming into the room to tell 'em to do chores and what have you. It's gonna be fucking stupid and annoying as hell.

No thank you.
