E3 08: Mortal Kombat vs. DC skreens and trailer photo
     E3

A few days ago, Midway gifted us with their official E3 game lineup. Despite the assortment of titles, the game on everyone’s mind is still Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Today, we have a host of new screens and a special never-before-seen gameplay trailer that will be shown at E3 this year. Consider this our little gift to you.

The screenshots show off a few new characters in action, including the Flash, Catwoman, Sonya Blade, and Shang Tsung. The Flash is looking about as cool as a guy that runs really fast in a red jumpsuit can, but Sonya and Mr. Tsung are looking up to the task. I’m still really disappointed that I have yet to see Johnny Cage. I think that man’s elbow fireballs and split-punch would be an awesome addition to this new franchise. Almost as cool, though, is the screen of Scorpion giving the spear to Catwoman. Something tells me that a metallic arrow on a chain especially hurts in this region.

The trailer shows off some of the sweeter things in Mortal Kombat, like blood and the possibility of a nasty Scorpion finishing move. I’m not ready to call this an instant classic yet, but I’m sure we’ll have a ton more information on the title next week at E3. Until then, wet your appetite on these screenshots below and check out the official trailer after the break.

I think the pimp bitch-slap should be a potential finishing move for any man playing against Sonia or Cat-woman.

Is that the current comic version of Batman??

Coz if so, that is some gross shit, and whoever came up with it needs some slapping.

Hopefully they'll have an alternate all black suit for Batman, I'm not a fan of the grey and black costume. It kind of goes against the whole stealth idea that is supposed to be what Batman is about. It's kind of hard to hide in pitch black with that color costume.

Hopefully the have Joker and Doomsday in the game as well. They would be awesome.

I was willing to put aside my hatred of MK to embrace the possibility of a good next-gen fighting game featuring my favorite DC characters. but judging from the in-game videos, the combat (with a "C") looks as stiff and bland as ever.

MK has always tried to emulate popular, better made fighting games and have always failed at doing so. I just wonder how much longer they can cover their tracks with gimmicks, blood and gore.

All in all.. this game might suck, but you know what? I dont care. It seems like there are not enough fighters the past couple years.. and I miss that. Seems like when I was a teen they were all over the place. I welcome this one with open arms.

Also... I have one wish, online play. Nothing better than fighters with online play. I loved DOA4 and their online... come on guys, please?

Man, I've been out of comics for awhile - when did Batman become a robot?

And not that a game of this concept would involve a high level of logic, but I'm assuming Flash doesn't have a special move where he can run for his life if he's getting his ass kicked?

Why do the characters look so clunky ? ... like Superman 64 or something.

Also, I hope this will be 2D ( fighting ) gameplay only, but with 3D chars, like SFIV.

FINISH THE FIGH- uh. HIM !

Saw the footage at Joystiq. My low expectations have been met,I'm still not impressed by Midways effort.Still though, I support the "Dream Match" fighting games. I Either hope this does well in the sales department, or someone else gets the DC License(SEGA, Sammy...SNK Playmore?) and makes a fighter for those of us not easily impressed with gore.

I don't know, maybe I'm just a comic nerd or something. But shouldn't Superman just destroy anyone and should really be a final boss or something. I mean unless Scorpion's Fatality has something to do with Kryptonite.

DC v/s Capcom would be ideal.

@ ridley80,
Superman is also weak to some forms of magic, and i prety sure MK is full of magical things.

s0lesurviv0r at 07/12/2008 14:12
Yea, using magic on Superman is the equivalent of dipping a Louisville Slugger and slapping around Captain Planet.

Superman is vulnerable to magic as well, not just Kryptonite, and nearly every MK character deals in magic of some sort. So that's excuse number one. Excuse number two could be that the merging of the realms changed the effects of the sun on Superman making him unable to draw his strength from it or something. It's a different realm, it could have different effects on him. Like for instance on Krypton Superman would just be an ordinary man, so the MK universe may have a somewhat similar effect on him.

I'm not sure how they do it with Captain Planet but most comic book writers had taken good care of superman's weaknesses since crisis of infinite earths.

Why do people keep saying things like "Just let Mortal Kombat die"? Doesn't Mortal Kombat still outsell pretty much all of the other fighting games? And none of their recent games have gotten bad reviews, that I'm aware of. I don't know were this misconception that MK games suck and that the series is dying come from. MK is basically carrying Midway.

And MVC2 was a great game, but I wish that people would quit acting like it's the God of all fighting games. It was ridiculously unbalanced. MVC2 is like playing Smash Bros. with items on high and only choosing stages like Spear Pillar. At least in Smash Bros. you have the option of playing seriously by turning off items and certain stages.

And Ryu fighting the Hulk makes about as much sense as Scorpion fighting Superman.

@Riser Glen -- Amen.

I never was a big fan of the MK series. The whole combo system and large button combinations never worked for me. Although it would never happen, It would be sweet if one day we saw Capcom vs Mortal Kombat. Especially if it used the same ideas from Capcom vs SNK with multiple grooves and styles of fighting. FAP FAP FAP is all I have to say.

What I understood of Ed Boon's interview in GameTrailers TV is that heroes that don't often kill their enemies won't have deadly finishing moves like fatalities.

So basically, Batman might have fatalities but Superman is more likely to end the fight taking his foe to prison.
