One of the games Nintendo really wanted to sell at their press conference was Wii Music. Nintendo’s game of invisible instruments seems to pale in comparison to the more competitive music games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Today, Shigeru Miyamoto talked to multiplayerblog about why consumers should want to own Wii Music over the new music offerings from Harmonix and Neversoft: What I find what is fun about music [games] is when you really get into a good rhythm and you have a great time performing. But the challenge is then, how do you do that in a way where people don’t have to worry about hitting the wrong note or making a mistake? So, that’s really been our focus with designing Wii Music.
So, the fact that Wii Music will provide us with the opportunity to act like we’re playing a game is the reason why we should gravitate towards the title? I’m sorry, but the idea seems to be lost on me. I realize every game doesn’t have to be competitive, but at the same rate, there has to be something present that is more engrossing than our own imaginations. I understand the sentiment when relating it to the uber-casual gamer, but for everyone? I guess we'll have to see later when we get our hands on it.

Watch it outsell rock band 2 and GH world tour combined -_-
cause I will buy it. Sold
I'm not totally sold on the idea of WiiMusic but I do think it has potential. I seem to be more optimistic about than most though.
So I'm still confused. And I'm not being funny here, I'm really asking: What do you actually do?
@Necrozen
I'm confused too...so instead of hitting the correct colored button, I just waggle? But because its not supposed to be competitive, any old waggle motion will do?
So, what's the point? Because if it's just random, penalty-free waggling with no type of reward either, then where is the fun?
mmmh, playing that I'm playing a game?, no thanks, I like to play games
I have a great idea. Let's reward a player for absolutely everything.
Kind of like Mario Party.
Is this man becoming the George Lucas of the gaming world?
I think this is more of a "toy" game for kids. I get a feeling that this isn't *really8 supposed to be considered a competitor with the big "band" apps.
You know, like the Wii?
The flaw in Miyamoto's statement is that a lot of people don't 'get into a really good rhythm'; they just think they do and so they really need a game that's isn't going to tell them otherwise.
In practice I think it'll be like a jukebox you have to crank to keep the music playing. You don't have to be exceptionally rhythmic, you just have to keep cranking at a reasonable pace.
It sounds like they're just going to make the margin of error so big that it goes from 'are you doing the right things at the right times' to 'are you doing things'
The guitar hero corollary would be a controller where the entire neck was just one button and you only had to strum on 45% of the notes.
Why the fuck would I want to pretend I'm playing a violin or a saxophone with the Wiimote when I can pretend I'm playing a guitar with something that looks and feels LIKE A REAL GUITAR!?
Nintendo has jumped the shark.
Wii Music looks interesting, but I think it's obvious to just about everyone that it SOUNDS like crap.
Wait, so it plays itself? Why the fuck would people want that? Of course the casual sheep will buy it and won't realize that it's playing itself. Poor bastards, they'll think that they're musical prodigies.
It's just a shitty music game for entitled casuals
Wow, that's ridiculous. This thing is a combination of tech demo's. Judging by the videos/screenshots and Miyamoto's statement, this is certainly not a game.
I've just realized Destructoid is made up of bitter assholes.
It's good to learn something new every day though I guess
If Nintendo keeps heading towards this "anyone can play" thing, expect the Wii 2 to have a Win Button.
"how do you do that in a way where people don’t have to worry about hitting the wrong note or making a mistake?"
Is Miyamoto saying that basically he wants to make games that have no challenge at all? Most of the fun of Guitar Hero and Rock Band is that you improve your game. You get better at it, and there's a level of satisfaction in completing the game. Basically what Miyamoto wants is for you to have something to do with your hands while music is playing in the background.
whee.
Add me to confused as well. So there is no particular pattern or anything to follow, just pretend to play? How is this different then just playing some music and air whatevering through it, besides being more expensive?
I fell asleep during his sax solo. Zzz.
This game kills my hopes for an Ouendan 3/EBA2 and for that I hate it.
@Leathersoup:
100% agreement. Might as well just buy a song and lip sync to it. That's about the same difficulty level as this crap will provide.
After how I struggled like crazy just to get past the Easy level on GH3, I love that I can now play songs on Expert mode. There's a great sense of satisfaction in seeing yourself become better. Probably the greatest satisfaction was finally being able to use that damned fifth button.
Wii Music looks like it will totally suck balls. I will definitely be adding Rock Band 2 and GH:WT to my Wii collection. I promise that Wii Music will never enter my house.
forecast for next mario game: mario is no longer affected by enemies and all pits are un-fall-into-able.
What's the difference between this and me jamming on my tennis racket to my ipod? Better music selection on the ipod?
While I'm not interested in this (nor the Wii in general), as I was watching the press conference, all I saw were dollar signs. This is gonna sell a bazillion copies.
*sells wii*
the article's headline should instead say "Miyamoto tells me why I don't need wiimusic"
Hopefully Wii Music has all sorts of classic Nintendo songs in it. Plus put in all the K.K. songs from Animal Crossing, too!
I hate you...nintendo what have you done!
Wait, when did Miyamoto say Guitar Hero and RockBand is obsolete to Wii Music? That seems so forced to me.
But yeah, like Wii Fit, Speak, and the rest, I'm not too interested.
What I find what is fun about platforming [games] is when you really get into a good rhythm and you have a great time running. But the challenge is then, how do you do that in a way where people don’t have to worry about hitting an enemy or making a mistake? So, that’s really been our focus with designing Sonic the Hedgehog games.
I can definitely see how this would be fun to play around with. I like to jam with real instruments with my friends, though.
I can see people wanting a more Guitar Hero-like way to play with it. Have some song play, hit the notes at the right time ... A freeform challenge -- "I am going to learn to play Bouree" -- is just as fun for me, though.
Isn't this kinda the same problem actual guitarists have with guitar hero?
You know, that it doesnt take as much effort and is just a way of letting people pretend they're doing it without really doing it.
Wii Music seems to just be trying to capture that feeling when some of us first play Guitar Hero with our friends, more of the communal aspect, where were playing just to be playing a song with our friends.
Im interested but far from convinced that this will work.
