E3 08: Microsoft details new Live interface and dashboard update photo

Today, at the Microsoft press conference, a new Live interface was revealed. It is a GUI that will incorporate Avatars, 3D sliders, and channels that will replace the blade system currently in use. As presenter John Schappert put it, the new interface is all about "simplicity and fun."

The Avatar is basically what we saw with the leak a few weeks back. Microsoft is using the studio of Banjo-Kazooie fame, Rare, for the visuals of the avatars. Users will be able to customize their Avatars however they wish – at a price. Shirts, pants, shoes, hats, and whatever else will be available via Marketplace. Avatars can also be used in XBLA, the first game of which will be the new Uno rendition, Uno Rush.

The “community channel” is also another part of the new interface. The big sticking point of the channel is the “Live party” system. Live party will allow groups of up to eight players to private chat each other at once across a variety of tasks, including watching Netflix movies or playing games as usual. Tied into this new system is “Primetime,” which, according to Major Nelson, is essentially a collection of trivia games that can reward gamers with real prizes as well as achievements.

A few other notable things will go down this fall when the interface is implemented. Xbox 360 owners will finally be able to utilize their hard drives for more than just storing movies and music. Players will be able to download their games to the hard drive, creating faster load times. New displays will be supported within the update. The elusive 1440x900 and the 1680X1050 will be available, as well 16x10 over VGA or HDMI.

We’re all sure that new stuff will continually be announced over the week, so stay tuned for more details on the above stuff, as well as anything that may pop up.

I honestly think it looks good, but the current dashboard looks better. Kinda reminds me of Vista, looked good. But never really was that great.

I can't wait for some Shitty Movie Nights through the 360. Also, am I the only one that's a little disappointed they still haven't bumped up the friend list limit from 100?

What's more distressing to me is how far Rare has fallen in recent years. From Goldeneye, Battletoads, Killer Instinct, etc. to designing virtual dress-up dolls for M$. *shakes head*

"customize their Avatars however they wish – at a price"

Man oh man, the things people will buy!

"Players will be able to download their games to their games to the hard drive" Just a little typo but thats good to hear. It's funny though as not too long ago people were crapping on Sony for Dl'ing games to the HDD.

If Sony can fuck you with microtransactions in home, we can fuck you with microtransactions on our avatars.
Go Micro$oft!

The new interface does look sexy though.

Pretty happy about the HDD installs. This elite was a bit of a waste of money up until this point, plus I've always wanted the option of having a short install to reduce load times throughout the game.

And pretty fitting that 16x10 aspect ratio is announced about 2 weeks after I ditch my little monitor and buy a lcdTV. BASTARDS!

What isn't mentioned is that the price you'll pay for downloading clothes and accessories for your Avatar isn't just MS points, but your dignity as well.

I like the idea of being able to choose which interface you want to use. I hope that's what they'll do.

Copying is what is also referred to as competition. Nobody said it had to be fair or original.

You can keep your gamerpic, but MS is ENCOURAGING users to use the avatars. Sounds ominous.

I have a question about this though. If we are able to copy our games onto our hard drives (which would be great for me as I am always cautious of getting even the slightest scratch on my discs) then what is stopping us all from just letting our mates borrowing our games and letting them get a free copy of it as well? It would be just like a modded Xbox all over again

kagai at 07/15/2008 00:04
@Crumpet Lips You have to have the game disc in the tray for the game to work.

So are you freedom-hating microsoft fanboys going to go crazy about how great harddrive installs are now?

nanowerx: What did you expect from microsoft? Really, it's like everyone in the world has forgotten (or is too young to have a clue) what microsoft is just because they put out a game console. It's microsoft, it will cost too much and break too often. I'd have been more surprised if it were cheap and good.

Well, I can safely assure everyone that I was never against harddrive installations. I've been doing this for years on my PC, so it's not that horrible. I do enjoy the fact that it's sounding like a full disc backup loaded onto the Harddrive, which not only cuts load times down, but should help out with certain issues like texture popping on some games. It's also nice to know that this little feature isn't mandatory, otherwise folks that bought the HDD-Less 360 would be pretty hurt.

So what does --Players will be able to download their games to the hard drive-- really mean. Is it possible to rent games and save them to the HDD and keep them 4 EVER?!?
