E3 08: Knights of the Old Republic MMO confirmed photo

In an interview with Conde Nast Portfolio, EA chief executive John Riccitiello confirmed that Electronic Arts haa their hands in the Knights of the Old Republic cookie jar. We have been hearing rumors of the title for several months now. Finally, the speculation can end.

We’ve got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development. And the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about – in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry at the point when we get closer to tell you about it.
When asked for clarification on the two MMOs, Riccitello confirmed that the first was Warhammer Online, while the other was KotOR. No additional details were given, but like Riccitiello said, we’ll know when it gets closer. When I first heard this I fell out of my chair. Additionally, I hit my chin quite hard on the desk. My injuries are of no consequence considering the amount of “DO WANT” that is pouring out of my system at the moment.

Finally, there is a new hope that we can have a Star Wars MMO that may not suck on the galactic scale of Star Wars Galaxies. While I won’t give BioWare instant credit, I feel as though the developer will handle this title quite spectacularly. Are you guys ready to pick up that lightsaber again?

I hope this is good. I hope KOTOR 3 will come at some point in the future. I've yet to play Final Fantasy XI because of it being an MMO.

MMNo?? I don't need an MMO in my life, give me a game with an end point. I dont even care if its 100 hours from now, but ongoing games, I can do without.

Speaking as an uber fan of both of the first KotOR games as well as Jade Empire and Mass Effect and Baldur's Gate and pretty much every other Bioware or Bioware-inspired game, I just have one thing to say:

This news sucks horrible, encrusted ass.

I mean, yeah sure, this is probably great for those who give the slightest crap about MMO games and I'm happy for them they'll be getting this, but as for me, I'll just have to wait for Sonic Chronicles and hope that it'll be good enough to assuage this disappointment. It's not an MMO, at least, so it has that going for it.

I'm not saying that this game is going to be a horrible game or anything (ala MK vs DC or the new Castlevania that everyone likes to rip on lately), far from it. I expect it will be an awesome game, just as most other Bioware games are. I'm merely saying, however, that I won't be playing it no matter how good it is, because I couldn't care less about MMOs in general. *sigh*

Point of actual discussion in lieu of more pointless rantage: could we have a bona fide WoW-killer on our hands with this one? Or will it fall by the wayside just like so many other contenders to Blizzard's throne? It'll be an interesting thing to watch from over here on the sidelines.

@Patriot SE

Have most of the people leaving negative comments actually played an MMO?

To be fair, no I haven't. However, I know people who have, and I know what became of them while they played them. It wasn't pretty. Happily, they finally eventually became burned out on the whole thing and returned to being normal human beings again. Well, some of them did, anyway. I still kinda miss the ones who didn't. I exaggerate, of course, but not by much.

When I say I couldn't care less about MMOs, it's not because I hate them, per se. It is because I don't want to become a zombie slave to the system, like I've seen happen to others so many times in the past. And I know that if I ever did start playing a MMO, that is indeed exactly what would happen to me. Nor do I want to end up like my friends who used to play MMOs all the bloody time but who now look on them with genuine loathing (as opposed to the mere militant apathy that I feel toward them). This is why I try to avoid MMO games like they were the plague itself. I have far too many finite games (one of which I was hoping the next KotOR game would be) that I haven't played yet to want to destroy my free time on an endless MMO, no matter how awesome it may theoretically be. Even the free ones. The ones that charge a monthly fee are doubly loathsome to my delicate sensibilities.

Well, if this is a nontraditional MMO, then there's a bit of hope for it in my eyes, as that means it could potentially not feel like your cookie cutter MMORPG and have a good story that gets pushed the whole time you're playing. The story was what drove KotOR for me, and MMOs tend to be severely lacking in the story department, or the story is stretched so thin amongst all of the filler grind...I'm not going to rant, but I don't particularly like this idea.

I agree with most of the people here, I don't like the idea of KOTOR turning into an MMO but if it is truly revolutionary and uses the whole Star Wars universe to the fullest potential (e.g. different planets, races, etc.) then I think I'll make time for this game and pick it up.

However in my opinion they should make a single-player title along with an MMO and let the market and consumers decide what they want.

This could really work if they made it more of an action/RPG hybrid and put it on consoles.

Something like a Jedi Academy/Force Unleashed sort of control scheme, mixed with a combination of open world and instanced missions.

I would play it, anyway. Sick of hotbar clicking MMOs

The only reallly good thing about this story. Is the fact they are releasing an MMO allows them to have pre-built matrix-es, meshes and textures for single player based games.
Expect a battlefront 3 in 2011.
