In an interview with Conde Nast Portfolio, EA chief executive John Riccitiello confirmed that Electronic Arts haa their hands in the Knights of the Old Republic cookie jar. We have been hearing rumors of the title for several months now. Finally, the speculation can end. We’ve got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development. And the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about – in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry at the point when we get closer to tell you about it.
When asked for clarification on the two MMOs, Riccitello confirmed that the first was Warhammer Online, while the other was KotOR. No additional details were given, but like Riccitiello said, we’ll know when it gets closer. When I first heard this I fell out of my chair. Additionally, I hit my chin quite hard on the desk. My injuries are of no consequence considering the amount of “DO WANT” that is pouring out of my system at the moment. Finally, there is a new hope that we can have a Star Wars MMO that may not suck on the galactic scale of Star Wars Galaxies. While I won’t give BioWare instant credit, I feel as though the developer will handle this title quite spectacularly. Are you guys ready to pick up that lightsaber again?

Just what we need, more MMOs... /facepalm
I love Kotor! But I can't get into Mmos... Tabula rasa was $100 thrown into the wind...
You're damn RIGHT we need more MMOs, especially if they're KotOR MMOs. Do want doesn't even begin to express my need for this.
But where is KotOR 3? Did I miss that announcement? I don't know that I have time for an MMO so I'd love to have a third one to play also.
Single player or GTFO
@pendelton21
You are a very strange man indeed.
We definitely need more QUALITY MMO's. I think Bioware can deliver.
WAAAAGH!
Can't wait for Warhammer.
Wow...that's the sound of me crapping my pants. Too bad I won't have the time to play. Guess I'll have to live vicariously through the author of this article.
Just what I need.
One of my favorite franchises turning into something I have no interest in.
Let me be the first to say: KotORMMORPG!
Fuck that, not interested in a fucking WoW type game of any fucking kind. No thanks, I'd rather spend 25 hours playing a single player title.
As long as they eventually have KOTOR 3 planned, I'm perfectly fine with this, but if this is the sole future of the franchise, I'll be pretty upset.
grinding with a lightsaber and force power?
YES PLEASE!
I'm guessing this will be PC only. Would be nice if this was released for something else (preferably PS3) so I wouldn't have to upgrade my PC. But I'll probably be looking into it either way.
FUKK YEA!!
Though I'd be surprised if this came out any earlier than 2010.
Looks like I am going back to the MMO world.
DO WANT!
I like games of all types- if it's fun (lot to live up to the other KOTOR games) then I'm all for it.
After Playing World of Warcraft (le sigh) since closed Beta up until 6 months or so ago (what is that, like 3-3.5 years?) I'm done throwing money away with these monthly subscription plans. I'll stick to my 360.
Is it just me or is it odd that EA choose to announce one of the most anticipated MMOs ever on Portfolio.com when E3 is on?
Its not the best way to announce and mmo and especially considering the worlds gaming press would bend over backwards for an announcement interview.
Doubts i have hmmm
hmm, love KOTOR, love BioWare...
not so keen on MMOs. we'll see what we see.
I don't trust it, despite my love for BioWare and their games. Why? Because unless BioWare is working on another MMO I don't know about, that means this is the one using the HeroEngine from Simutronics. I know the engine got kudos and shit a couple years ago, but I haven't trusted SimuTronics for years and the game the engine was built for, Hero's Journey, looked like complete garbage.
Hopefully BioWare can whip it into shape.
Honestly, Galaxies isn't that bad anymore. It went what I refer to as the "G4 Effect", where it started off strong, sucked REALLY hard in the middle, and got pretty decent again.
With that said, I want my KotOR 3, dammit.
Sorry, but what we need are good MMOs. What we don't need are people trying to pass crap off as MMOs, which is what we have now for the most part.
This is definitely a moment for BioWare to shine, because if they don't they'll be the next SOE. Fingers crossed, BioWare!
Have most of the people leaving negative comments actually played an MMO?
I was probably as big of a hater as you were at first but eventually I gave WoW a chance and it really see me the good side of it. BTW, WoW wasnt the only MMO that I have played, but it is the one I keep going back to.
Im not even going to read the post... all I need to know is ANOTHER MMO is coming out..
ENOUGH! There are already a fuck ton out, do we really need more?!
i am not ready to pick up the lightsaber again.
I am READY TO PICK UP MY TWO LIGHTSABERS!!! AMIRITE!! AMIRITE!!
i welcome any new non-fantasy MMOs on principle though.
ENOUGH! There are already a fuck ton out, do we really need more?!
There's already a ton of FPS games out there, do we really need more? There's already a ton of platform games out there, do we really need more? There's already a ton of RPGs out there, do we really need more? There's already a ton of action games out there, do we really need more?
With logic like that, the gaming industry would be dead.
An acquaintance working at Bioware couldn't talk about this game for the last year. (I guessed Kotor MMO), so I'd wager it'll come out between Warhammer MMO and it's first expansion.
Yeah, I loved the single player, but I'm willing to let that die and launch the universe full throttle into the MMO sphere. All kinds of awesome.
I'm STILL pissed off about SWG sucking giant donkey balls. God I was excited for that game.
I guess I will try to keep my excitement in check for this one. Still, I would love a good Star Wars MMO, and anything KoTOR-related has to be pretty cool.
SWG was a great game, it really was, untill SOE kept trying to "fix" it. If I could find a privet server that was even post CU, Id play it in a heart beat.
Do have high hopes for the KOTOR mmo and pumped for warhammer. Who was it that was working on the 40K mmo anyone remember?
I would play a (good) MMO with lightsabers in it, yes I would.
I texted this news to a couple buddies.
The 2 immediate responses were:
"Fuck that."
"Noooooooo"
I concur.
I'm sure it will suck just as hard as galaxies.
DO WANT! Between this, Warhammer, and Diablo 3 I have no time for a life.
@Turbospaz, you never played Kotor Obviously.
This was the worst decision that could have been made for this series. KOTOR is not MMO material. You can't do branching dialog in an MMO, you can't do good/evil systems in an MMO, and you certainly can't play as a character that's in any special in an MMO.
But hey, if while playing KOTOR you've ever thought "gee, I wish I didn't have any of these force powers or lightsabers, just blasters and vibroswords" or "you know what this game could use more of? Mindnumbing experience grinds" then I'm sure this is great news for you.
I have mixed feelings.
=[=]
Like that.
My life, it is over.
This is good news. But I have to admit, I'd prefer KOTOR 3.
@Trepie
I imagine it may come out on a console, but I seriously doubt it will make its way to the ps3. Maybe the 360 though. Don't think Sony would want to completely and utterly kill off SWG by supporting the competition on their hardware.
@yumplumbum
The folks at BioWare have already stated that the MMO they are working on will be different from everything else out there. They are focusing first on story. Why couldn't an MMO have branching stories? Guild Wars kinda took some tentative steps in that direction. With people being on different stages of certain quest lines and then seeing different game worlds because of that.
I want a proper KOTOR sequel, not an MMO. Well, both, preferably. This will absolutely not be enough, and I won't touch it unless I hear that they'll be finishing the trilogy.
Isn't this just being made by their new Texas branch which is full of SOE people? Bleh, I'll believe it when I see it.
Also a Jade Empire MMO would be cooler.
Hooray! Let's hope they get it right!
"@Turbospaz, you never played Kotor Obviously."
I have, it was awesome. But by your logic, a Bioshock MMO would be automatic win, just because the single player game was good. Gimme a break.
A good Star Wars MMO would be quite nice.
So this is the end of SWG and of any hope for a proper ending for the series, eh?
In response to this, I have prepared a statement.
*shuffles papers, nudges superfluous reading glasses* Ahem.
FUCK.
The sad part is I'll still probably pay good money for this.
would it be on the consoles?
When I was playing KotOR I was thinking "this is fun, but my character feels too important to an overall story. I wish he was an unimportant nobody fighting the same things over and over again by himself for no real purpose." Now I can!
You can't do branching dialog in an MMO, you can't do good/evil systems in an MMO, and you certainly can't play as a character that's in any special in an MMO.
Sure you can, it just hasn't been done because everyone is copying everyone else. And, technically, the good/evil system has been done time and time again. By the way, being evil doesn't mean giving you reins to use derogatory remarks to others considering you're all playing the game to have fun, not create animosity in real life.
