E3 08: Guitar Hero IV will be compatible with Rock Band instruments for the 360 photo

During Activision’s not-E3 press conference yesterday, a developer for Guitar Hero: World Tour stated that non-Guitar Hero instruments will work with the next Guitar Hero game. MTV Multiplayer then confirmed with Activision that the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero: World Tour will indeed work with the first Rock Band instruments. No word on whether or not Rock Revolution or Rock Band 2 instruments will work since they're not out yet.

So far, only the Xbox 360 version compatibility is being talked about as Activision  won’t say if the other platforms will get the same treatment. The cross compatibility has actually already started with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith as there was an auto-download for the Xbox 360 version at some point that should make Rock Band guitars work with the game right now.

So this pretty much leveled the Rock Band 2 vs Guitar Hero: World Tour playing field.  Will you be getting Guitar Hero: World Tour now that the instruments are cross compatible (for the Xbox 360 at least)?

Naw, Rock Band has over how many songs? 300 or something? Or was it 2000...

Whatever, I might pick it up, but whatever company decides to put in a double bass pedal in the next installment is my winnner.

I really just love the Rock Band guitar controller. So I can't wait to use that for a Guitar Hero game. I completely quit all GH games after Rock Band came out because I hated using the GH controller.

I'm guessing the rock band drums are not compatible. They only have 4 pads while the gh ones have 3 pads and two "cymbals"

I wonder if they'll patch the 360 GH3 to accept the RB strat, because I wouldn't mind unlocking some of those achievements with my bro, and more importantly GH2 on the 360 would be even better, as we haven't duo'd Search and Destroy in entirely too long.

BS. They probably misspoke or something. How would you get the Rock Band drums (5 butans) to work with GH4 (6 butans)?

Plus, I hate Activision and desperately want to see GH4 fail.

FUCK YEEESSSSSSS.

Now I don't have to shell out 200 bucks to get both sets of peripherals. I wasn't looking forward to choosing between Hotel California and Pinball Wizard.

And I must be the only gamer who actually preferred the GH controllers. I hated the clicky buttons and non-clicky strum bar of the Rock Band model.

This is good news if its true. The thing I don't understand is why they would patch GH:Aersmith and not GH3.

Meh. GH3 killed my urge to play another GH game ever again. I'll stick with Rock Band.

Yeah, I'll probably get GH:WT now because of that, only because my best friend loves The Doors.

if PS3's GHWT's new guitar gets compatible with GH3,not only as playable guitar but usin' the new slide frets as Tapping n stuff...it would be the best of the best!

Have full compatibility all around, then we can leave just the lunatics to argue what one is best while the normal people just play both.

That's great news. I currently use two Guitar Hero controllers (one les paul and one explorer) for when I play co-op with either Rock Band or the Guitar Hero series. It'll be nice not having to replace my drum set either. I enjoy both series and can't explain how happy I am to be able to save wasted money on more unnecessary peripherals.

I think that this is freaking awesome, and a very smart decision by Activision. I hope that both EA and Activision make their games cross-compatible with each other's peripherals, and let the games with the best features sell the most copies. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people buy both discs, I know I would.

What I REALLY want to know is whether RB 2 will support GH:WT's instruments, because I want a more realistic drum kit. Plus, I am apparently the second person (after Madness) that prefers GH's guitars to the guitar from the original RB.

I think it's great that the two brands are pushing each other. RB 2's feature of letting you access your previous RB downloads is freaking fantastic. I care about that much more than "creating" music. Hopefully future iterations of GH will do the same (I know there isn't much hope for it yet, since none of the songs had vocals or drums previously).

I pray that this is to be true for the PS3 and Wii.

FYI, the Drums will work as well.

Over on the wired blog Activision is quoted as saying that if it detects the 4 pad + 1 pedal RB controller (instead of the 5 pad + 1 pedal GH:WT controller) it will downsize the board to be only 4 pads wide.

Probably combining Green + Orange into just Green.

"Here's how it'll work. Speaking with Bright after the conference, I found out that the game's five-button drum track, shown above center, will be compressed down to four inputs if a Rock Band drum controller is inserted."

I think Activision had to do this, the RB2 stuff I've seen so far makes me want to pick up the new drum set for one of the games, if both games are instrument cross compatibile I will more than likely pick up both games.

I'm curious about the Guitar Hero music creation and that weird neck on the guitar.

I have a savings plan for all my RB/GH purchases, by the time each game comes out I'll have saved enough cash to buy both full sets. Anything left over goes to DLC assuming I don't have to purchase both full sets. :)
