If you weren't already curled up in a ball and dreaming of the day when Home would come out, Sony mentioned FUNimation as one of its partners in content distribution for their new video on demand service. FUNimation is currently the largest US anime licensor, and here's a quick rundown of the content that's on the PSN right now:

  • Afro Samurai
  • Astro Boy (Sony Pictures)
  • Basilisk
  • Burst Angel
  • Desert Punk
  • Gunslinger Girl
  • Kiddy Grade
  • Moon Phase
  • Samurai 7
  • Trinity Blood
  • Xam’d: Lost Memories
  • Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles

...wait, Xam'd? This title doesn't mean much to most of you, but it's the latest project from Bones, the animation studio behind Fullmetal Alchemist and Ouran High School Host Club. Xam'd, or Bounen no Xamdou, doesn't even have a release date in Japan. What we have here is Sony making the extra push to get digital content onto the PSN, and they're wooing the notoriously stubborn Japanese studios into putting their content online.

Fansubbing has been a serious issue, and so it's nice to see that Sony helping to make headway (and realize what their fanbase likes). Japanator will have a review of Xam'd: Lost Memories up in the next day or two, so be sure to pay us a visit as well!

Why must you keep tempting me, Sony?

Xam'd is DRMed to hell, but it's understandable -- some people in the anime community will go to whatever lengths they can in order to distribute anime for free.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but this isn't THAT big an accomplishment. Most (and perhaps all) of this stuff is already in iTunes...so it wasn't a big stretch for Funimation to cart it over to Sony's store.

It's pretty cool that they got a show that's not even out yet in Japan.

Man, Funimation sure has come a long way since they were the scourge of the anime community for their treatment of Dragonball Z.

While I doubt I really get any of these as I've seen a lot of them already and have no shortage of anime to watch, this is a cool new way to access anime. More options the better.

I had to have a sit down chat with my wallet and paycheck last night to tell them they wouldn't be seeing much of each other for a little while. Damn movie store!! Xam'd looks pretty good

I would be a lot more interested in these if the file sizes weren't ridiculously huge. Any anime watcher that grabs fansubs knows that even the largest rarely clock in at over 300MB...and yet these 20-25 minute long series are hitting almost 400MB! That's not even making mention of the usually-400MB Mythbusters episodes reaching 700MB+!

Sorry, Sony. -_- Call me when you aren't leeching the fuck out of my memory stick with these ridiculous sizes.

I'm assuming these are all dubs right? I really wish those downloads came with audio/subtitle options, but that's why they make DVDs I guess.

@Kia, Do you want it to look like shit on a large screen?

I'm not an anime fan, so this doesn't affect me, but I am very impressed at the vast amount of content on the store in the first freaking day.

OH FUCK YES DESERT PUNK! I wish they'd let you download the whole season at one time instead of each episode individually.

Holy shit, I was on my PS3 yesterday and knew nothing about this pretty cool stuff!

After reading the comments, are these just subtitles or are they dubbed over?

Its subtitled, which I like it seems like its straight from Japan. It's interesting so far, but as soon as it gets good its over. I wish they would allow us to purchase the episode though rather than just rent it.

@Dick McVengeance I don't think thats true at all, most if not nearly all drop any licensed products as soon as it is made known. Most people will stop seeding and everything they can in order to promote it's sale. However on occasion there are animes so obscure or so POPULAR that no matter what it will continue in its production. Sometimes though the studios don't even care. As far as their concerned that means its uber popular, and eventually you'll have Burgerking making minis of your product.

I don't see why we haven't had this for ages already. Is it really that hard to do a decent translation? When a bunch of people can do it in their free time with a week's turnaround, I don't see why all anime doesn't get a sub on release. If a bunch of hobbyists can do it in a week an anime studio ought to have it done before we even get it.

And they get mad at us when we fill gaps they create on purpose.

Yeah, the store is pretty amazing for being one day old. I've never been much of an anime fan because I'm an older dude and just missed the whole craze, but that's mostly because i dont know anyone whose into it so I dont know what to watch or where to check it out. I may look into this just to see what the fuss is about. I guess making it available to clueless folks like me is another good thing about this.

Do it. Haha...no seriously, anime is a very respectable medium of entertainment, despite what most people think. Especially if you're into the action genre...anime does a better job with action scenes than any other medium. It's definitely worth it to at least check out 2-3 different series, and if at that point you don't like what you've seen then feel free to move on.
