E3 08: Forza Motorsport 3 impressions photo

As a general rule, I don't play racing sims. The learning curve is usually a little too steep for me to become adjusted to driving a realistically recreated, high-performance automobile using a tiny analog stick and buttons to replace a wheel and pedals. What usually winds up happening is a painful struggle to make it around the track in a good position, only to lose my lead to a stupid mistake and I give up

I thought I was fairly ill-suited to attend a meeting with Microsoft on the subject of Forza Motorsport 3 as a result of this. Nevertheless, they managed to surprise me with a beautiful game containing features that could help take some of the frustration out of the genre.

Cars in Forza Motorsport 3 look fantastic, as you would expect. What pleasantly surprised me was the look of the menu system. Taking cues from magazine layout, the menus look clean and crisp with a very minimalist approach that allows you to focus on the beauty of the vehicle you're about to drive without a lot of noise and clutter.

Turn 10 Studios is packing a ton of content into this release. There will be roughly 400 cars from fifty manufacturers and a hundred tracks for you to race them on. All of the cars will have a damage model and any car that could physically be rolled over in reality will be able to do that in the game.

The things that make me really interested to give Forza 3 a spin are some gameplay changes shown in the meeting. The goal of the designers was to make a racing simulation that would appeal to people of all ages and experience levels. AI racers make more natural mistakes when driving. If you can get right up behind them, for example, there's a greater chance that they'll misjudge a turn due to your intimidation of them. These errors are more frequent in lower difficulty settings.

The really interesting feature I was shown is the ability to rewind play at any time you wish. By pressing the "back" button on the controller, you are pulled five seconds back in time and you can perform this as many times as you like to correct an error or just to have an opportunity to do something a little differently than you did the first time. This takes some of the pressure off of less skilled players while remaining completely optional for the hardcore racing fans.

I'm impressed with what I saw. Some players who take their racing games extremely seriously may be put off by the changes. I really liked them and they seemed inobtrusive enough that it should expand the audience of people who enjoy racing games without really alienating anyone. I can't say for certain whether or not I'm pushed over the edge into buying a more serious racing title when it releases this October, although these details are a step closer to that happening.

It was the tuning aspect of FORZA I never really liked. I like to jump in and race not spend an hour fiddling with tire pressure or suspension just so I can magically go from 3rd place to 1st. Give me a realistic driving experience where I don't have to be a car tech wizard in order to place well and I'm sold.

Awesome. Just completely awesome. As long as the car customization and painting is still in place, I'll be satisfied.

But this is REALLY beautiful.

Agreed JLanphear. I loved adding that personal touch to each of my cars.

For my money, this was the most graphically impressive in-game demo at E3 this year. I was actually lost for words by the detail in the scenery and the lighting effects.
This is what all current-gen games should look like.

Forza 3 looks amazing. I hope that they allow for PSD and AI files to be used for the car customization. There was nothing more aggravating than trying to get a decent looking custom car decal designed with the analog sticks rather than going to my PC and whipping something up there with a tablet or even a mouse.

The rewind option sounds like the same thing that was featured in GRID from Codemasters. That was great for me because, for some reason, when playing races that lasted more than 5 minutes I found myself to nod-off from time to time.
I had so much trouble with Endurance races in Forza 2, I almost went crazy!

I loved Forza 2 and pretty much finished it (970/1000), but what worries me a little is that the FM3 demo from E3 seemed to be mostly in-game video (like a replay) instead of gameplay video (except for the cockpit view of course).
Grid had a camera that was behind the car that also moved a little to the side of the car as you zoomed around tight corners. It gave a really dynamic feel to the racing. Please Forza 3 include that kind of camera option.

I liked Forza 2, but mostly to make a customized Shoop Da' Woop car. The tracks were all pretty boring, the fiddling feature was exhausting at times when I wanted to just be experiencing the track, and I quickly lost interest when Codie's more action-oriented games came out.

It sounds like they're moving in the right direction with encompassing the better ideas of other games while staying true to what makes Forza its own unique beast. If they find a good line between making it deeply customizable and consistently interesting while not sacrificing too much of its more sim-like elements, I may have to pick this one up.

i dont mean to sound like a stupid sony fanboy, but GT 5 is going to be 1000 times better. first off, it has real tracks and racing teams which now include NASCAR (!) and WRC. also, the GT games have always been way more realistic when it comes to the feel of a car and the physics of the track/grass/dirt (this coming from every member of our local SCCA branch that have played both). FM3 has 400 cars? that sucks, considering GT PSP has 800 (thats twice as many) so GT 5 will probably have over 2000 cars and 400 or 500 tracks. and FM3 will be on 2 disks

The more I read about forza, the more exited I get :-)

Can't wait to get my hands on some more racing action :-)

loved the first and second one but I loved GT5P as well, it will be nice to see those 2 compete... at the moment GT5 has a serious leg up for me due to the support for the G25, but since they showed F3 with a new racing wheel, I hope they put in support for the g25 as well since all simlovers with a little dedication have one of those :-)

Every racing game needs a rewind function. I am so glad they are including one in Forza 3. Also, HolyCowCubs, comparing two games that aren't out yet and claiming that one will obviously be better than the other makes you look like a stupid fanboi. Compare GT4 and Forza 2 all you like, I'm sure the guys in your chapter of the SCCA can talk for hours about those two games. But none of you have played GT5, GT PSP or Forza 3, so comparing them is futile.

GRID did this first, and presumably, better, because Forza 3's mechanic sounds like it has unlimited use. I do not like that idea at all.

As for the game itself, I was disappointed we didn't get to see it in motion at E3 a bit more, especially on the design end of things. Have they increased the number of decals you can place on a car? There's a lot of questions still left to be decided, but I can't resist playing this.

HolyCowCubs:

1. You are talking about two games that you have not played and have not been released.
2. Forza 3 is coming this October, GT5 has no date.
3. Forza has real tracks, that is a fact.
4. Both Forza and GT are sims, that still pale in comparision to their PC counterparts when it comes to physics and realism.
5. Unless you have both consoles, these games are not really in direct competition.

Forza 2 had the VW Corrado. One of my favourite cars, and never seen in any other game that I've played. As long as Forza 3 has the Corrado too, then it will be the best racing game EVARRRRR!!!!!

Also, 400 cars is ridiculous. How many hours would you need to experience fully even half that number? So, if indeed GT5 has 2000 cars (very much doubt it, but I could see them going to 1000) then that is just being a stupid cunt.
