E3 08: Final Fantasy XIII Versus still 'PS3 exclusive' photo

One of the big shockers from the Microsoft press conference was the unveiling of a new Final Fantasy XIII trailer and the subsequent announcement that the once exclusive title would be coming to the Xbox 360. The foregone conclusion one could draw from the announcement is that all Square Enix titles have the propensity to float multi-platform. Fortunately for the Sony crowd, a PSU interview with Square Enix executive Shinki Hashimoto has revealed that Final Fantasy XIII Versus will remain exclusive to the PS3:

We won't change policy. Final Fantasy Versus XIII is still a PlayStation 3 exclusive.
The interview also revealed that FF Versus XII director Tetsuya Nomura was working on another titled called One Goal Spirit. We have no clue what that game is about, but work on it has since been stalled in favor of Final Fantasy XIII. The big question remains, will FF Versus XIII be a “timed exclusive” or one of those real exclusive things?

I’m always a bit torn about exclusive titles. On one hand, exclusivity usually assures a great title that was excellently funded and shipped with few flaws. On the other hand, exclusivity can really hurt the gamer without the console. For a good chunk of time, it was looking like Xbox 360 owners were going to miss the bus on Final Fantasy XIII entirely, which would have been incredibly unfortunate. This might all be irrelevant by the end of the week anyway, as E3 has barely even started. Yet, what do you guys think about this? Would you rather just have FF Versus XIII on the PS3? Or would you mind letting Xbox 360 owners having a crack at it?

The more people playing a great game the better. Whether or not it will be considered "great" is still to be seen. Graphics and a moody lead character does not automatically equal a GOOD game, no matter what Square-Enix will try and tell you. I don't blindly trust anything those guys do anymore.

I am starting several online petitions to keep this game exclusive. Its the only way to get anything done these days.

PS3 exclusive or not, is there really enough info about this game to be excited for it yet?

What is it?

uh, I hate exclusive titles and I do mean MGS4. I've been thinking about finally buying a Next-Gen system and without MGS 4 on the X-=Box 360 I might just buy the Wii. However, FFXIII does catch my interest.

Fanboys tend to think that the demise of the opposing console would be a good thing. But it's competition that has made gaming what it is today. I'm all for exclusives because they keep that competitive edge in the industry - easy for me to say cos I've got all 3 consoles. I love my 360 but hate the way microsoft is doing business. Nabbing all these exclusives off Sony instead of pushing their own developers to come up with new IPs is anti-competition and will be to the detriment of the industry. Mark-me-words.

Exactly, high profile exclusives keep the industry competitive, and that's a good thing for gamers. When you reach the point when the majority of games are no longer exclusive, then the overall quality is going to degrade, and we all lose.

I thought Garrfunkel was being ironic with that statement. Or facetious. Or sarcastic. I forget which - it's too damn early to think right now.

I don't see how a 3rd party game nowadays can be financially logical being console exclusive. Unless your a 1st party dev, it should just be multi-platform. Versus will be on the 360.. bank on it.

I'm actually more excited about FFXIII Versus than FFXIII. As a 360 owner, I'm happy that I can now play ANY Final Fantasy, but I would prefer that it was Versus coming over instead.

What Yojimbo said...

If you are a third party developer why would you sell only to 14 million or just 19 million when you could sell to 33 million. Just bad business. And to all the fanboys out there, who cares??? Everyone makes a big deal about FF13 (PS3 fanboys and 360 fanboys), but in reality more people get to enjoy the game. Not a big deal.

I personally prefer the idea of exclusives as they are in general of higher quality and have a lot more tlc when being made.

I'm not sure if I can believe Versus will remain a PS3 exclusive though. Maybe after losing FF-XIII Sony are even more keen to keep at least one FF exclusive on their system.

All we know for sure right now is that we cannot trust whatever Square Enix says (or what any publisher says really)

As long as the game itself isn't compromised significantly (beyond potential multiple discs), I'm all for Versus appearing on 360. The only thing that concerns me is the large Blu-ray capacity meaning a game could potentially be on five discs, which could disrupt a game's flow.

Of course I'd rather have it strictly to the console I've chosen! I want to be able to look down on others and ridicule them for jumping on the wrong bandwagon, just as I scoff and spit on those who like something BEFORE it became cool.

No really, I spit on them. I have a carton of wet wipes near my monitor because it's become an involuntary reaction, to spray saliva at those who would threaten my sense of being a "have", as the King Cobra would to those who encroach on its territory.

I was surprised when XIII was announced for 360- it's a bit blow to Sony. But I'm still getting it on my PS3. I was more excited about Versus anyway, and in a way I'm glad it's exclusive.

While I think Sony losing XIII is a huge blow to them, I don't think it really affects me much as a gamer. As long as I am getting the same game, like with GTA4, then more power to them, let them get theirs.

What really pisses me off is exclusive content, like what happened with GTA4 and is now happening with Fallout 3. Personally, I'm not a big enough GTA4 fan to buy extra content. Fallout 3 however is an instant buy for me and I'm sure any add-on's to it would be as well.

Sony has really been dropping the ball as far as exclusive downloadable content goes, but they still have to give their presentation today so we'll see what happens.

I can't say that I'm incredibly excited for the next Final Fantasy. Although I'm definitely anxious to play Dissidia if and when it comes to the states.
I might have to import T-T.

Don't care that much, console fanboys are just straight up stupid, they should get all worked up about something of more value to society. 3rd party games really should be multiplatform so they can maximize their profits. More money in developers hands means more and better games for us.

I don't have a big problem with multi-platform games, I just don't like Mirco$soft. They don't deserve cool shit, their entire fanbase was built on lame FPS's and fuckin' MADDEN, and it makes me kind of sad that it's so easy for such a shitty company to buy off developers.

I guess I don't mind as long as they don't put it on one DVD, because if we're (PS3 Owners) are jipped out of being able to use the full power of the Bluray/PS3, I will be pissed. The Xbox version better come at a $10 higher cost because of all the extra DVDs (10-20).

@Corak More money in developers hands means more and better games for us.

See theres the problem, we PS3 owners don't believe that is the truth. Take for instance GTA4 and Infamous. Same open world gameplay, except Infamous is better looking has better effects and everything else. Since GTA4 was thrown onto a shitty DVD format its crappier looking than it should have been. We complain because we made the better choice, with MODERN technology. Where as Xbox comes out of the box looking backwards, from lack of wifi to lack of harddrive. Xbox owners suffer from their own backwards looking community. From games that suffer from having to work on consoles without a harddrive to other limitations.

Xbox holds the Xbox back, what effect do you think it has on the PS3.

I really hope FF13 Versus comes to the 360. That and MGS4. Then I have no problems not owning a PS3. Hell I want FF13 Versus more than FF13. And thats saying something cause I don't even like FF.

I would have preferred it stay on PS3, just so we wouldn't have to put up with all the 360 fanboys flip-flopping because they now love the game. But it's much more important that ATB is coming back!!
