Straight from Microsoft's E3 2008 press conference, here's a quick demonstration of Bethesda's post-apocalyptic action RPG, Fallout 3.
Among the cooler things shown in the video are V.A.T.S. (Fallout 3's turn-based fighting system), enemy bodies being blown to smitherines in slow-motion, and my personal favorite, the mini nuclear bomb catapult.
There's no doubt in my mind that more than a few hardcore Fallout 1 & 2 fans aren't going to fall in love with what Bethesda has done to their precious series, but I for one am loving the atmosphere, the fact that you can choose between real time and turn-based combat, and the impressive sound design.
Hit the jump for even more Fallout 3 goodness.
If you're not digging the live action in this next video (why wouldn't you?), make sure not to miss the actual gameplay near the end of the trailer. There's more violence, more gore (did you see that guy's eyeballs go flying!?!), and a greater variety of enemy types shown.
Jordan Devore is Destructoid's PC gaming manager and founding ginger editor. He is said to be easy to love but difficult to know. When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied: "bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Man that commentary was so lame. I'm pretty hyped for this game, and I hope it doesn't turn into another Oblivion in the end and fail to meet my expectations.
I thought the gameplay trailer was great. However, there non-realtime elements seemed like cheating to me for some reason, queuing up headshots seems a little silly. Still going to be awesome, though.
For those who never played Fallout 1 or 2, I highly recommend you play them. They are classics. I actually am disappointed. Maybe I am expecting too much. The graphics aren't really that impressive, and perhaps I am just too stuck on the old Fallout 1/2 isometric play that I just can't get into the third person/first person change. I want to love this game, but right now I am feeling serious reservation. =\

I played both Fallout 1 and 2, and this game doesn't even appear that it will come close to the awesomeness that was Fallout 2.Just one main city/area? (bleh) No turn-based combat with some party members? (no thanks). Just seems like a shooter with a Fallout shell on it.... no thanks.
I tried to go back and play the first Fallout, honestly maybe ppl who played it back in the day have good memories of it, but I just couldn't get into the old school hardcore CRPG mentality of it: "Hey we need you to go out into the desert to scout around for some mutants" but what they don't tell you is "...oh btw you'll encounter them randomly, they'll slaughter your whole party in 5 seconds, and if you havn't saved in a while, too bad, you're effed son." Not to knock anyone's preferences, I love the retro-futuristic/post-apocalyptic art style, I just couldn't get into the game... I'm totally pysched for this though, already ordered the survival edition from Amazon, and I think Bethesda is gonna do a great job of making this more accessible(ooh dirty word!)
@kent: I don't know the current status of the Good Ol' Games project, but you can try at www.gog.com . You should be able to get Fallout 2 from there at a good price and without DRM, if I am not mistaken.
Nope, it looks similar to Baldur's gate combat (sorta) : real-time with the possibility to pause and choose the action. I love the previous two games, and I must admit this looks like a worthy follow up until now.
I think is absurd that some people were expecting an isometric turn-based rpg in 2008...
I agree with Phantom Spaceman, i tried playing both fallout one and two recently, and i have no idea how people played this without a guide or something.
I epecially loved the randomness! Those special encounters could be interesting or deadly. You had the ability to save whenever you wanted, there is also a quicksave feature. The possible danger of getting offed by roaming around somewhere you shouldn't be or just plain bad luck brought a bit of suspense to combat encounters.
game looks to be good, though i hope the AI was turned down for the demo cuz pulling out a shot gun a blasting a guy twice while he's just standing there seems lame, but again was probably just he demo. glad i already preorderd my copy

It looks so very amazing. Any news on a release date?

Fucking Bethesda.
This is the reason I am buying an Xbox.

@Kurtz: I disagreee, a 2008 turn-based rpg could be so sweet. It could have been.
i hated the combat system and the randomness
But after this trailer I just can´t leave out of the: DO WANT list.
"We aren't making Fallout 3 an Oblivion with guns"
"Okay guys, we're done. Here's your Oblivion with guns. We threw in a few series icons so we can still say it's fallout".
VATS looks retarded. From the footage it seems like a crutch for people who suck at aiming. Fuck you Bethesda, fuck you very much.
