E3 08: Audio of roundtable with SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton photo

Sony was kind enough to invite us to a small roundtable discussion with Sony Computer Entertainment of America President and CEO, Jack Tretton.

The guy, apparently, is pretty important. Following yesterday's press conference -- which was hosted by Tretton -- it stands to reason that the press had a few questions. Tretton was pretty forthcoming and candid in the laid back roundtable.

Some highlights include:

  • How did Sony react to the Final Fantasy XIII 360 announcement? ("Am I disappointed by it? Yeah. Am I surprised? No.")
  • Are Sony feeling pressure to deliver Home after Microsoft's avatars announcement?
  • What's the hold up with Home?
  • The PlayStation 3 as a media center versus a gaming console. ("[We] can't deny [Sony's] heritage by painting it only as a game machine," he said.)
  • Is there an opportunity to turn consumers who purchased for Blu-ray into gamers?
  • Digital rights management and the PlayStation video store.
  • Does the movie store effectively kill off the UMD? ("I certainly hope not.")
  • Have Sony thought about a hard drive or storage space solution for future iterations of the PSP?
  • The discrepancy between PSP hardware sales and software sales. (Tretton cites piracy as one of three reasons.)
  • Why no mention of Killzone 2 at the press conference?
  • Being "Indian givers" regarding PS2 backwards compatibility on the PS3. ("You can stack [the two systems] on top of each other if you really want to," he joked, mentioning that the price point of both consoles today equals the cost of a launch PS3.)

He's right, they are a great hardware company, specifically in regards to the PS3. But, they need to collaborate a hell of a lot better than they have considering the software guys rely on the understanding as well as purpose of the hardware.

The only thing I really have against Sony at this moment is just the fact how the UK is treated.
I mean, once the amount of dedicated Playstation marketing in the UK was huge, the console had a ride named after it in Blackpool Pleasure Beach, vans toured around and consoles were shown off in nightclubs.
Why not now? I admit, in comparison to the Jap store, the US store is crap...and guess what, In comparison to that the UK store is barely worth visiting except the occasional over-delayed fantastic PSN games.
How about a little more love Sony? Some PSOne games that were actually in the charts in the UK, maybe even games originating from english developers and publishers.
The UK is not Europe. We speak English too. I look forward to the our version of the video store.

Almost finished listening to it, and I'm fairly astounded by his earnest behavior, honestly. Good listen... except when someone hit or dropped the mic a few times and caused my ears to bleed due to sudden and sharp increase in noise.

Jackie boy's tho thenthitive. He has a surprisingly normal voice, as opposed to other PR men with either nerdy or bombastic voices.

Didn't like the fact that he made the nonexistant BC sound so absolute, but great roundtable otherwise. I hated him less here than I have every other time he's spoken.

I think people are being overly sensitive about BC. He didn't say it was gone, and in fact said multiple times that he hopes people continue to buy PS2 games. What he said is that, for the PS3, it's something they have decided to not focus on, especially since you can get a PS2 and PS3 for less than the cost of a PS3 w/BC at release. They're focusing on other things with the PS3 since there exists PS2, which most gamers. especially those who want to play PS2 games, already own.

I find backwards compatibility important on my Wii due to the lack of hardcore-oriented games coming out. PS3 doesn't really have that problem. But it would be nice if Sony decided to include PS2-support in an upcoming firmware.

Which all means that BC is out of the PS3. We already knew PS2 games work on a PS2; that goes without saying. The point is, we want to play PS3, PS2 and PS1 games all on the same system, to remove unnecessary living room clutter. Them taking it out of most PS3 SKUs disallows that.

Obviously the statistics said that not enough people cared about BC on the PS3 compared to other things that it's been taken off the table. And, as he said, if you asked people if they're rather have BC or not, of course the answer is going to be yes, but not ahead of other capabilities.
