Dynasty Warriors Gundam combat: It's just some robots fighting

9:41 PM on 07.31.2007, Jim Sterling 41 comments

     Namco Bandai
The Dynasty Warriors Gundam demo still hasn't hit Xbox Live in Europe, so in the meantime I'm stuck watching videos like this, dreaming of the robot-on-robot carnage that may one day be mine. I have also come to the conclusion that this is entirely Namco Bandai's fault, not my beloved KOEI's and that Namco Bandai is in fact chock-full of incompetent boobs.

While we're here, I may as well inform the people that I tried watching an episode or three of Mobile Suit Gundam so that I wouldn't be going into the wretched plain of licensed videogames unarmed with background knowledge. Instead of gawping at huge robotic suits wailing on each other for my amusement, I felt like I was watching Dawson's Creek, the amount of teenage angst that was in it. I really hope the game doesn't capture that part of it, because I don't much fancy pressing Y to charge my Emo-Meter.

RESIST!

If you don't then the next game published by Koei will be Dynasty Warriors Animaniacs.

Wait, that would be cool.

Anyway, I was bored by the PS3 demo and I enjoyed the previous DW games, so there's another reason to avoid DW:G.

I found it to be much faster paced and a bit harder than the other Dynasty Warriors games.

A lot of fun to be honest. I keep telling myself I'm not gonna buy the next Dynasty/Samurai game that comes out but that never works. I end up buying all of them. Except empires. Empires can burn in hell.

Watch G-Gundam. It actually has action and fight scenes unlike Wing. Plus it has the stereotypical Mexi-gundam.

And Turn-A is playable.

And there are a million Kampfers.

Scirocco was the king of all badasses in Z Gundam. He had a two-kilometer-long spaceship, an all-female crew of mech pilots in said spaceship, the most awesome Mobile Suit in the series, and he uses his psychic abilities to GIVE THE PROTAGONIST A SEIZURE.

Badass.

It's pretty fun, but the character's float of the ground for some reason. It looks like they walking a foot off it, kinda weird. Although I love Heero's quote when you select him/ "i will kill you"

Why did you watch Gundam Wing? :l That is your fault for slamming your dick in a closet door.

As for this game, it might better capture some of the bigger battles through the Gundam series but the gameplay of Dynasty Warriors depicts otherwise. If it's as simplistic as any of those games then it should be mediocre.

If it had a bit more variety, this may actually be fun. Too bad its repetitive.

On a side note, Gundam Wing was terrible. Watch Gundam 08th MS Team or something that isn't action packed with terrible.

Gundam Wing was a great gateway Gundam back when I was a preteen, but once you get into the Gundam series, you realize that Wing really only has good character/mecha designs and nothing else. Universal Century Gundam series (like 0083) are much better. Oh, and I second Toneman's recommendation, provided you like campy fun.

As much as I love DW games... I can't get over how wrong this looks. Gundams should be flying around and being all agile and shit. Meh... I don't have a 360/PS3 anwyays. Looking very much forward to Orochi Warriors though! (almost said Otogi Warriors... I can dream)

You can fly. Wing Gundam could even transform in the demo.

the angst in Gundam Wing is completely dwarfed by the newest series, Seed. Honestly, I can't remember a particularly angsty character, but fucking Gundam Seed is just pretty much "I DON'T WANT TO FIGHT BOOHOO" every goddamn episode.

It may be another Dynasty Warriors, but you won't find a better Gundam game. Gundam games have had a "Sucks-More-Than-Oreck" curse since the WonderSwan.

Where the fuck is the F91 Gundam danmit.
The movie sucked, but I liked the F91.

G Gundam is a bit better than F91. Plus it features moar stereotypes.

It still is your fault you watched Gundam Wing. Its almost as hated/bad as Seed based on how ppl say it seems like a soap opera. Never watched either...so I can't really comment on that.

Yeah the dynasty warriors control scheme makes me angry. there aren't that many moves to do, so you end up doing the same thing over and over again. Ninety-Nine nights fixed this by adding a leveling up system in which your combos change and you add new ones when you level up.

Don't forget good ole' Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket. It's a nice change in pace from the others in that it focuses a lot more on "regular" people. Such as how kids view and can be impacted by war.

And Agent Chieftain, personally Paptimus annoyed the hell out of me in Zeta. I don't know if it was his name, the way he acted or his shiny gold circlet but he's certainly never been a favorite of mine. Also Reccoa got on my nerves toward the end too. All that "Wah wah I'm your enemy now. Char not being my boyfriend pushed me over the edge!"

As 0080 goes, that's only a plus. The main foci were KAMPFER AND HYGOGG, although both got ripped to pieces.

And it's probably the shiny gold circlet.

If the demo level is any indiciation, no familiarity with the storyline of any of the series will be necessary. Ive always imagined a Master Asia/Heero teamup, but I watched alot of gundam drunk.

Also, Bandai needs to make a perfect grade model of the mexico gundam. Id so pick that up.

Any chance of the FAZZ I wonder? Thats alot of guns... But if I get enough G-Gundam love, Im all over this.

Dude...it is freaking Dynasty Warriors. The exact same crap we've all been playing for 5 years. You can throw gundams in it, but it is [b]still[/i] Dynasty Warriors.

And, they're walking around in mid-space.

Sadly, this game will probably go the way of the Pokemans and sell way more than it deserves.

(And just when I thought Gundam Seed was the most Emo anime -ever-, they go and trump it with Seed Destiny. I just wanted to slit Kira's wrists for him, so his pompous "I understand everything even though I'm 15 and it's meaningless" attitude would go away.)

Gundam Wing existed for the sole purpose of creating material for yaoi artists to work with.

Prove me wrong.

Sterling: you have to give Gundam a chance. Keep in mind that it was made in 1979. And although Amuro Ray can be quite an annoying little shit, I think if you keep watching, you'll be more drawn towards the dramatic combat scenes that really can't be recreated in the games. With the true gundam series, whenever characters go fight, you never really know who's coming back alive.

now i like the idea of this but i dont like the "flat ground area in space" idea. you should have free movement in space like zone of the enders. that would be cool

Jim Sterling, give the movie trilogy a try, it moves the story along much faster and you can actually watch it in Japanese. God forbid you're watching the show in English, as the US dub of Mobile Suit Gundam] is just friggin' terrible. I'm a HUGE Gundam fan, and even I won't buy the TV series on DVD because the original language isn't included.

Rather, just watch Char's Counterattack, and see what a badass Amuro and Char become fourteen years later. Not to mention the v GUNDAM is the greatest mecha to ever grace celluloid.

Hey, fuck you guys, I actually like Gundam Wing. G Gundam was just too over the top and rediculous (I heard both the english dubbing and original japanese with subtitiles for Wing, and only the english dubbing for G Gundam and all I have to say is, Shining Finger? Are you fucking kidding me?), albiet with some seriously badass looking Gundams. And the Mexican Gundam just made me lol.

All in all, I liked Wing and 0080 the best, with the original with subtitles a close third and SEED and G Gundam at dead last. And I'm still waiting to watch any of Z (can episodes with subtitiles be found on the tubes anywhere?). Get the originals with subtitles if at all possible.

Yep, still buyin' it.

And yeah I'm a fan of the Gundam anime too. I think I've seen every series except Victory Gundam and SeeD Destiny. Still like it.

And Jim, don't watch the original MSG series, just watch the 3 compilation movies.

I don't think the devs fully appreciate that it's one thing for a single guy to wipe out thousands of ordinary people, but one mech wiping out thousands of other mechs? That would be absolutely catastrophic for even a highly advanced military.
