Dynasty Warriors 7 getting Japanese voiceover DLC photo

Responding to significant fan demand, Tecmo Koei has announced that Dynasty Warriors 7 will be receiving a Japanese voice track option as a free downloadable content update. In addition, a range of extra costumes will be provided at no extra cost.

The publisher confirmed that paid DLC -- consisting of new stages and weapons -- is on the way, with prices yet to be determined.

Warriors fans typically have a hard-on for the Japanese voices, though I don't get it myself. Samurai Warriors Chronicles doesn't have an English voice option at all and I've found it's made battles hard to concentrate on, since you need to keep reading objectives rather than playing the game. Nevertheless, this is still a cool little extra, and it'll be worth checking out just for the novelty.

Oh, and to the guy who happily thought I'd have to stop writing about Dynasty Warriors 7 now that the game's been reviewed and released ... HAHA@YOU! Dynasty Warriors is forever.

Now watch the guy who Jim called out come back with a "Question Jim's journalistic integrity" response, which leads to Jim's other detractors coming in for support with "Dynasty Warriors sux anyway lolol" responses.

Probably not, but it would be funny if it did. I could use a laugh.

I wonder if the American voice actors who have done voices an these games realize how fucking terrible they are? But at the same time, the terrible voice acting has given the series a certain charm.

That being said, the Japanese voices are a welcomed feature!

Regardless whether u prefer English or Japanese VO, I think it's pretty cool that Koei is giving its fans the option through free DLC

The "American voice actors are terrible" thing hasn't been true in years. DW these days features a pretty decent cast. Not all of them are good, but most are at least competent. They've even features pretty accomplished voice actors (Yuri Lowenthal is a series regular, for example).

Hell yeah. I'm looking forward more to the costumes, but just not being nickled and dimed with DLC for once is a great feeling!

People actually still CARE about the voices? Its the same fucking situtation with anime - as long as its GOOD, who gives a shit what language the voices are? Its always good to able to choose, but there's no reason to think so highly of voice acting

I give a shit. It's the little nuances present in native languages that aid in my enjoyment of a piece of entertainment.

I can understand during battle, but cutscenes should be presented in the original language with an optional English voice for people who prefer that. Why even make it DLC? I guess if the disc was packed, but we know that's not the case.

Anyone, nice to hear this. It sways me more into buying this as I've been dying for a good Dynasty Warriors type game for awhile.

this is cool for the people that want it.

but arnt voice files pretty large? i mean shank was huge(2gb dlc game that was short and lacking features) mainly cause of the voice over work wasnt it?

@fetusmilk

It depends on the quality and the compression of the audio files. The old rough guide with MP3s was to expect about 1 minute per 1mb of stereo music, at least before bandwidth and harddrives increased to the point that lossless compression started catching on. But different formats can give you either better or worse compression for the same audio quality. And voice work would presumably be recorded in mono, unless the scenes are recorded and mixed together beforehand? (On the other hand, if you record everything individually and then mix it at runtime, then you might have multiple audio files running concurrently.)

I don't see the point. It's a nice touch (considering it's free, at least), but half the fun of Warriors games is the blaring soundtrack, campy voice acting and little girls swinging giant maces around. Playing Samurai Warriors Chronicles right now, my one and only complaint with it is that it comes across as taking itself too seriously.

That said, free DLC is always a nice touch.

This doesn't make much sense. If people want it to feel immersive shouldn't they be complaining that it's not Chinese voices? Or is this just a bunch of weaboos?

I think the "DW voices being bad" is pretty much gone. If anything Samurai Warriors 1 was the last of the really bad American VOs. (SW1 Okuni? fuckin horrible.)

though I do miss America pronouncing Tsao Tsao like Cow Cow. But they still pronounce the "Pi" part in Cao Pi like Pee when it's "Pei"

Shouldn't it really be getting a Chinese voiceover in its various dialects? You know, given it takes place in China?

At any rate, thank you Tecmo-Koei for giving weeaboo trolls another reason to not shut the fuck up about Japanese VOs.

I agree with Jim, its kinda hard to make your way through Samurai Warriors Chronicle with an English text overlay to read what you need to do next, particularly given that you're busy attending to time-based objectives and can't always be able to pause to read. Since I don't know Japanese, the VO accompanying English text isn't helping.

An English VO would have been infinitely more helpful than keeping the Japanese VO.

I actually enjoy the DW7 dub, but hey, this will be a nice thing to mess with once in awhile. I'm definitely looking forward to more stages though, especially if said stages involve characters who aren't used in story.

These complaints seem really weird to me. Is it just that some people suffer some strange form of elitism where they can't stand the idea of someone liking something that's in a language they don't understand?

Why would a Japanese game have Chinese language voiceovers? The German characters in American WW2 movies always speak English unless they're nameless grunts with no real dialogue.

I wouldn't mind English VAs so much if 99% of them didn't sound absolutely horrible. Do these people even know how to speak English properly? How the hell did they get their jobs with their monotonic dull lifeless phoned-in voice acting?

The VOs in DW7 are much better and to everyone saying it the JPVOs should have been on-disc apparently hasn't played it the game is over 6 GB. Which 90% of all games never reach. But I agree that they should also add Chinese VOs to make a more authentic feel.
