Dyack: Epic defrauded the games industry photo

Sh*t On Denis Dyack Day continues with our third story on the lovable loudmouth. This time, Denis dredges up the ongoing legal battle between Epic Games and Silicon Knights. Claiming that Epic defrauded a large portion of the games industry, the too talkative Too Human creator lays the blame for his game's delay squarely at the feet of the Unreal Engine masterminds.

"[Too Human has] been a four-year development cycle and it would have been out even quicker, but we had to re-write the engine because of all the Epic stuff," claims Dyack. "The trial is proceeding; we feel really good about our claims, and we're hopeful that justice will be done. We all feel really strongly that they have defrauded us, and a major portion of the industry."

Nasty accusations indeed. Of course, none of us really knows what went on with Epic and SK, but so far I'm yet to see anybody else blaming their problems on the Unreal Engine or its creators. We'll find out how well SK did without Epic however, since Too Human is out soon, and we'll have the review up as quickly as possible. For some reason nobody wants to send me a copy ... I've got no idea why that could be.

Jim the world doesn't revolve around you. If you check Metacritic, no one made a review yet so you're not alone, they don't hate you, etc etc. Stop the pessimism!

Has anyone ever seen Dennis Duck and the Jimster in the same room at the same time.
Think about it.

Lightthrower...apparently you don't get the whole sarcasm thing.

Although I do struggle to understand why Jim shits on Dyack ALL the time. Give the game a fair shake mang.

Did he forget that it was in development for 5 years prior to being a 360 title?

@ConsummateK

I think Jim shits on Dyack all the time because Dyack makes ridiculous claims, starts fights on the Internet, and spent 9+ years developing a game that sucks ass through a straw (y'know, from what I've played).

Split personalities, at war with one another, vying for control.

This whole thing is so stupid. Silicon Knights is pissed that Epic didn't provide them with the Gears of War version of Unreal, but the barebones one that ships with UT3. Many developers who use the engine create their own tools and add-ons to be implemented that are proprietary to that particular game. There are many such tools in the Gears version of Unreal. SK wanted Epic to do all the work for them. When SK realised that the barebones engine is missing much of what made Gears into Gears, well, instead of doing what most devs do (create their own tools to add), SK sued Epic. Really poor form, in my opinion and they're gonna ge crucified for it.

If Epic delayed Too Human, I think we all owe Epic a debt of gratitude. Sorry, lads, but at least you tried your best. Almost succeeded.

No one but Epic, SK, and their lawyers knows the real story of what went on/is going on. There is no use jumping on the "hate Too Human/Denis Dyack" bandwagon and pointing fingers until we see the results of the fair and just legal system.

So until then, everyone needs to shut their damn mouths.

@ Lightthower: Game Informer has, the two reviewers gave it a 6.75 and a 7. Not terribly impressive for a magazine that usually skews its review scores higher than most. For some perspective, they gave Lair a 7.25 and a 8.

For real? Are they available online for viewing, or is it only in paper format? Like i said, Metacritic has nothing up :-(

Dyack needs to hire a PR firm, and stay away from the internet, and 90% of his problems would go away.

@Lightthrower: Scans of the print mag that's just recently started arriving to subscribers are floating around. Doesn't seem to be on their website yet, probably will be in another day or two.

1up.com gave it a C-.

Lightthrower:

Reviews are out. Too Human PR won't talk to me, only to other staff members. Besides which, it was a frigging JOKE over how much shit I get Denis. Jesus.

It seems that there is some merit to Silicon Knights claim, if you'll remember a few companies came out and complained about the engine after the suit was filed. Plus how many PS3 game delays were chalked up to difficulty with the Unreal Engine?

Well I don't blame him, Epic tends to upgrade the unreal engine with tools they have themselves but never provide these tools to other companies, when it comes to Epic games you'll notice how they talk on how they've been improving it little by little(hence why the Gears PC content can't be released on consoles), meanwhile the other companies have to make to do with what Epic gives them.

As Arrested Developer has mentioned, SK isn't the only company to complain about the Unreal Engine, they're jut the only company to SUE over it. Off the top of my head, I know Bioware and Mistwalker had complaints, and I remember one of the Square-Enix dudes said that it's so much trouble getting the Unreal Engine to work that you might as well just make your own engine. Honestly, I prefer when companies make their own engine, as it gives it more of a unique look. Everything made through the Unreal Engine looks identical. Even Lost Odyssey, though it has a Japanese art style, the environments, the textures, the normal mapping all look like something out of a Western game, yet Blue Dragon and Final Fantasy XIII have looks of their own.

Still doesn't mean that it's Epic's fault Too Human sucks, as they didn't program the motherfucker.

I'm a giant whore for loot...as long as that satisfies I'm happy. I mean really folks I spent like 400 hours on PSO and that combat was much less interesting than Too Human's.

So I suppose what I'm saying is that I'm a sucker for this game...so I guess that's why the hate seemed out of place. Of course, I admit, it's probably warranted.

Regardless, I intend to sit in the corner by myself playing this and having a grand old time. I DON'T NEED YOU ANYWAY.

*sniff*
