Dusty PS3 is dusty, denied warranty repair photo

Any PS3 owner can tell you that the shiny black console is a dust magnet, but this is ridiculous!

The Consumerist managed to get the of pictures of a PS3 console that was denied repair under the warranty due to its dusty state. Sony wanted $150 to brave the dust bunnies and filth.

Apparently Sony originally wouldn't release photos of the dirty system, but later determined that the pictures of the owner's console are "neither confidential nor private," and now The Consumerist has them to share with the gaming world. After seeing them, it was probably in Sony's best interest to show these to the world -- this system is disgusting!

Seriously, what the hell? Does the owner live in an adobe hut? This looks the system has been through the courses of Motorstorm and Sega Rally Revo, and then hit by crossfire in Call of Duty 4. I'm with Sony -- there's no way in hell I'd repair this system. What do you think?

Check out more dirty pictures after the jump.

Since when did dust void the warranty? I disagree with a lot of you. This is pretty weak. So what if the outside of the console is dirty. I'd like to read where it says in the warranty agreement that if your console is too dirty the warranty is voided.

The PS3 is the perfect console when you're busy at your wood working lathe and needing something to do while on your smoke break and busy petting your cat.

Total negligence. Look at that thing! The guy is dreaming if he thought he was gonna get that fixed for free.

These pics don't really do as much justice as the one where it shows the ports and exhaust holes covered in dust. I can't believe I actually felt sympathetic towards the guy... until I saw the pictures. At some point you'd think the brown color might be an indication to wipe the damn thing off.

I'm absolutely with Sony on this. Whether the thing cost $600 is beside the point. The point is that the thing has been treated with utter negligence, and now it's not working. What a surprise. This has got nothing to do with a company honouring its warranty, it's about common sense and peoples inability to properly care for their possessions. If I bought a PS3 and allowed a dog to piss on it I certainly wouldn't expect Sony to fix it, and if I allowed it to become so caked in dust and grime that even the USB ports are clogged I'd expect the same.

What would happen if they fixed it and sent it back? In another few months they'd be seeing it again.

As an aside, I work in a videogames shop and we deal in secondhand hardware. Some of the stuff that gets offered to us would make you retch. People are, on the whole, fairly disgusting.

Optimus Prime beat me to it but...

It's clearly Sony's fault, if they had put out games, then he would be in this mess.

It's just some dust and something called customer service. They should dust it off and fix the damn thing. Or fix it and don't dust it. This is also the exterior of the PS3. It says nothing about the state of the insides. The dust reason is pure BS. If you say that it's negligence, the spirit of the agreement is that you don't totally screw up the system. Dust is something that just happens.

We as consumers should not accept this BS because it really opens the floodgates on what companies can do to void our warranty.

All we need is a couple more dusty PS3s and a name for this, I'm thinking dustgate or DS3, and we have another RRoD customer fiasco.

to those on Sony's side: wow, are you on drugs?

first of all, the picture made it look dirtier than it really is...don't believe me? try to take a picture of your own PS3 WITH DIRECT FLASH on the thing...

sure, the owner should have at least tried to clean it up before sending it in, but that's not a friggin' reason for Sony to charge $150 UNLESS THEY CAN PROVE THAT THE DUST CAUSE THE THING TO BREAK.

the PS3 is a duzZZt magnetzz...he probably left in on a carpet. with F@H running on it...yeah, it could get dirty easily in days.

Does it really say that? I'd assume it would be more secular :D

Also, I am no dust collection expert, but this PS3 does not seem to be passively collecting dust, he might even have dropped it on dirt!? Look at the uneven dust and blobs of dirt, and the surface seems scratchy..

As most of us know you have to take care of your electronics. Its part of the ownership of the product. If you don't clean or at least dust off your electronics don't expect them to last as long as they could. There are a lot of idiots out there that don't have common sense that think no matter what condition the thing is in someone will fix it for free, and that just isn't the case. That's why companies have to stipulate those things in their warranty coverage because of the morons out there.

Also, an "act of God" is a short way to describe things like natural disasters, lightning, fire, etc. Yup that means if your house gets blown away in a tornado the manufacturer won't fix the product when you find all the pieces, shocker I know. Also neglence, which applies here, means that if you don't take care of your product and let it start to look like this they won't fix it either, and its not up to you to decide wether it was neglence or not, thats up to them. Bottom line, take care of your shit and this won't happen. I don't even want to know what this guy looks like or his house for that matter.

I agree, If you don't take care of your system, a company should not be obligated to take care of you. Working at a gamestore I saw systems like this all the time for trade in and i refused them ont he grounds that a) it probably didnt work and b) if it did work, no one would buy it. This was against policy of course, but i dindt care, who wants to deal with that?

Note: I once had roaches crawl out of a ps2 that was that dusty, onto my hand, the guy was surprised when i refused to take his system.

I still just look at this as a very dusty PS3. That's why there is a casing on all electronic equipment, to keep out dust. What matters is the inside. Considering so few PS3's break in the first place, you think Sony wouldn't argue about some dust on the outside, which is exactly what is going on here: There is dust on the casing of the console.

Not only would I expect Sony to fix it but it would be a good show if they took a cloth and wiped the dust off as well.

I've seen a 360 returned from free servicing at MS with brown stains on the casing. They even threw in a free faceplate.

Weak, Sony. Weak.

The kid is a total whiner.

The pictures you saw of the outside are of AFTER he cleaned it. Yes he readily admits that this is how it looked *after* he cleaned it.

He argues that the flash made it look dustier and that there is an extra fingerprint on it.

The PS3 operating instructions actually do state that you need to keep it away from dust and smoke.

He going to be on Fox news soon according to him. I'm sure it'll be a good show.

@TempyMcTemp:
That explains how the dust is so uneven, and the splotches of dirt (esp. on the side view), he probably tried it with a wet cloth, and the dirt accumulated as mud at parts of it..

Your entertainment area has to be pretty filthy on a pretty regular basis for something to get that dirty.
I got my 360 in march 06 (Aus launch) and have probably cleaned it once, when I moved house, in October 06. Looking at it now there is a small amount of dust on top, but all ports and vents are clear.

Keep a clean house, and you shouldn't have to worry about maintaining your machine half as much, filthy bugger.

I agree that this constitutes negligence (yes, people, that’s how it’s spelled — not “neglence” or “negiligence” or “negelgance”, etc.) on the user’s part, especially if this is what it looked like after he tried to clean it (where was he using, the desert?) And I’m on Sony’s side here — according to the terms of their warranty, they shouldn’t have to fix it.

I just think the reason that Sony gave is retarded and has no basis in fact. This dust poses a health hazard to technicians? Are you kidding me? Wear a fucking filter mask, then, and if anything, charge the user. I mean, I understand that a technician wouldn’t want to attempt to fix it before it was cleaned, but that shouldn’t cost $150.

Stop kissing sony's ass, I bought a PS2 that was way dustier from gamestop and it worked fine. Dust is not the issue, the PS3 isn't working and it's under a year, just because its dirty does not mean that it will affect the PS3 in a way that it would make it misfunction. If dust is a big problem for the PS3, buying one isn't very encouraging, and I'm not even talking about the lack of good games, or price yet.

I think Sony is correct about refusing this repair. You can't treat something like garbage and expect it to get fixed. Try it at any store with any piece of electronics, cell phones are a prime example.

You drop a cell phone and smash the screen 8/10 times you have to pay to get it fixed and if it looks like you took a dump on it while doing doghnuts in a sand pit in your moms 84 plymouth van with your cousin Vinny, I bet it will get turned down for "free" repairs.
Im OK's Avatar - Comment posted on 11/15/2007 22:06

Why is it that when people say stuff against Sony it's all "OMG everyone hates Sony you haters stop bashing Sony" and when people say stuff for Sony it's "quit kissing Sony's ass"? Sony may have done some stupid stuff in the past, and may do some more stupid stuff in the future, but when they're in the right they're in the right. If this is indeed what the guy's PS3 looked like after he cleaned it, then damn that's even worse. Why should Sony have to pay to replace a product under warranty if the consumer has treated it like shit, which breaks warranty?

The reason Sony gave that it was hazardous to technicians' health is a bit flimsy, though (despite the fact that I can kinda sympathize with not wanting to have to wear a freaking HEV suit just to fix a PS3). Especially when all they needed to say was that it simply broke the warranty by looking like so much ass, the likes of which would have required extreme negligence on the part of the user in even the most benign of interpretations of whatever the hell may have happened to this PS3.

Damn, I'm a dirty-ass lazy bastard who's never cleaned his 360 since launch, hasn't vacuumed in about 2 months (the last time a girl came over) and have cat hair over everything, and it doesn't look NEARLY as bad as that does...

Not that I ever really play it, I mainly just see it's reflection in my monitor while playing PC games, which hasn't been cleaned off in God knows how long as well.

But damn, that PS3... I don't even know how you do that without trying. It even made me just wipe off my monitor.

So ummmm, if I don't ever wash my car and it then breaks down within the warranty that should void the warranty? I dunno if it's quite the identical situation, but I do think some sony repairman should have grabbed a rag and taken the 5 seconds it would have taken to wipe the dust off and proceeded with the repair. What the hell.

My PS3 was just refused warranty service as well. They wouldn't even open it up to see what was wrong claiming excessive dust (I'm having them send pictures). The unit was thoroughly cleaned before it was sent in and while in use, the exterior was cleaned every other week and the vents where vacuumed once a month. All my other electronics have worked just fine for years with like maintenance.
