Any PS3 owner can tell you that the shiny black console is a dust magnet, but this is ridiculous! The Consumerist managed to get the of pictures of a PS3 console that was denied repair under the warranty due to its dusty state. Sony wanted $150 to brave the dust bunnies and filth. Apparently Sony originally wouldn't release photos of the dirty system, but later determined that the pictures of the owner's console are "neither confidential nor private," and now The Consumerist has them to share with the gaming world. After seeing them, it was probably in Sony's best interest to show these to the world -- this system is disgusting! Seriously, what the hell? Does the owner live in an adobe hut? This looks the system has been through the courses of Motorstorm and Sega Rally Revo, and then hit by crossfire in Call of Duty 4. I'm with Sony -- there's no way in hell I'd repair this system. What do you think? Check out more dirty pictures after the jump.

Uhhh it seems to me that anyone with half a brain would clean their dustridden PS3 before sending it in.
yeah, when they sent it in why did they not clean it? This confuses me... the person must not be very sensible.
Whoever owns that doesn't deserve to own a games console, period. Sony not only was right to refuse it, they should have slapped the owner as well.
Seriously, you can't NOT look at that and come to the conclusion that it was probably not the system's fault it's broken.
you iiiddiot!!! (in best ren and stimpy voice)
It would seem that the unit has been through one too many pizza orgies and a few lonely nights. Personally, I don’t think masturbating on the unit should be covered under the warranty.
This reminds me of college from 4 years ago when the San Bernardino fires were a mile away from where I went to school and it literally snowed ashed for about 3 days straight. Seriously, how does something get THAT dusty? For a while I was on this kid's side, but not anymore. That just shows a total lack of care for the console, and a total lack of intelligence from the guy who sent it in.
Ew... I bet it's all weed rez too.
rockvillian - good call hahah
It was pulled out of a vacuum cleaner in a smokers' home.
Y'know, I was with the user until I actually saw photos of the system. A note to the owner: It helps to not blow your cigarette smoke directly onto and into the system.
Not only should he have to pay $150 for the system repair, afterwhich he should be made to trade it in and sign a form stating that he is never to own electronics ever again ever.
For once I'm on Sony's side. Please, don't let this be a habit since I feel just as filthy as that PS3 right now.
your missing the call mp3.
http://consumerist.com/consumer/audio/sony-csr-what-no-dust-doesnt-void-your-ps3-warranty-321288.php
anyway, im guessing the inside is caked with dust. the ps3 is a dust magnet. my cussins ps3 had a ton of dust with in just a month. i could only imagine how folding@home must of made a dust box out of the pstriple.
i don't think it's neglect. the thing is just sucking in dust 24/7 because sony offers you folding at home. hes been runing his system like any normal person. that shouldn't void his warranty.
They could totally trade that in to Gamestop.
That doesn't look very dusty to me. I still think this is a total cop-out on Sony's part.
This article needs more alien lesbians.
what a dirtball...wash your grimy fucking hands, quit smoking around electronics, and kill your cats
Why the hell are you guys on Sony's side on this? I'm agreeing with most of the comments on the consumerist on this one. How does a dusty console represent a "threat to their technician's" health?
The dirtiest part is just fingerprints.
He missed the picture where the controller and usb ports are CAKED with dust.
How the hell does something get that dust after only a year?
That's nothing compared to some of the desktop pcs that people bring into repair shops... One of the worst I ever saw was brought in by an old lady, the case was rusted shut (rust caused by pet urine).
Definatly on Sony's side here, and I can speak from experience. I used to be a tech at Best Buy and some of the crap I saw come in just floored me. "Why is my computer temperature so hot?"...well that's because there's enough dust inside to make a coal miner cough.
But the best was when a customer brought in his PC that smelled and looked like it came out of a cow's ass. It was the most foul smelling thing I have ever seen and smelled, I won't go into how bad the customer smelled as well and he was completly oblivious to it. I originally helped him but I brought my boss over because I didn't want to check it in, obviously. After some coaxing he got my boss to take it in, but we all made it clear the rest of us were not going anywhere near it. So he was stuck with it, he didn't touch it for almost a week, it was in a garbadge bag with a glade air-freshner inside. Not sure what he did to it, but it eventually was fixed, and afterwards he realized that he really shouldn't have taken it.
While you can make fun of the owner all you want, where in the warranty does it state your system must be in any form of Sony-specified condition of cleanliness to be warranted repairs? Because, like its appearance or not, by law they should be required to repair the system.
@Snaileb How the hell does something get that dust after only a year?
By not having any decent games to play and just sitting on the shelf for a year :)
It looks like it was sitting in a warehouse for a year. Seriously.
B-Radicate: I'm not sure, because I haven't read their warranty, but I'm sure it's a "limited warranty", and I'm sure there's some stipulation as to negligence, etc. and to me that constitutes owner negligence.
Someone like Chester Stiles left it out in the Desert.
This is either someone testing Sony's repair police or someone that is too lazy to clean the outside of the console before sending it to repair...
l2 dust cover. i called up my mom and asked her if she would sew me together a dust cover for my ps3. i have it on when i'm not playing it works as intended.
*policy
Regardless of its condition, that's still a $600 piece of electronic equipment that's backed by a warranty. I don't care if the gut sent it in with a turd duct tapped to it, Sony is obliged to fix it. Is the warranty void because this thing has been modded by dust? If this same thing happend to one of you, you'd all be raising seven shades of hell right now. If i spend 600 bucks on something and it stops working in less than a year, the manufacturer had better fix it.
After working at Gamestop for three years, this does not surprise me at all. I have constantly received systems which were covered in this much dust if not more. Even covered in various types of sticky residue...Seriously if you are going to spend that much money on something wouldnt you take care of it? I guess not for some people...
LOL @ "Repair Police"
That's DreamvsPS2's PS3.
It's gotta be.
Anyone from the IGN boards will get that joke - especially if you saw his pic of his 360 controller....which looks like he used it to wipe his ass.
While the person who sent his in is clearly negelgent to his console and should have taken better care of it, if it's under warranty than it's up to Sony to fix it. If more than a year had passed, yeah, $150 would be understandable, but otherwise, no.
that's a lot of dead skin cells there
no comment. Also i completly disagree with whatt jim says
this shit is more dirty than ron after ten gallons of alcohol.
While such negligence and console abuse isn't covered under warranty, Sony was wrong to charge 150$ just to clean the damn thing (assuming cleaning was all it really needed to be repaired).
The proper course of action was to tell the user that fixing it was free, but cleaning it would cost. If cleaning it was what fixed it, or was required to fix it, then the labor would be charged.
And frankly, I don't feel the PS3 is any more a "dust magnet" than any other piece of electronic hardware. The black gloss simply causes more dust to be clearly visible. My PS2, PS1, telephone, lamp and PC all attract similar levels of dust.
The owner of the console was obviously negligent.
This guy had to live in a pile of dirt. I've had my NES stored away for 15 years and it doesnt look nearly this bad. This tells alot about a person's lifestyle. Can you imagine what his lungs must look like? Glad they said no to the owner. Sony should've sent him a bar of soap with his PS3.
look at this
http://kotaku.com/gaming/top/ps3s-kicks-ass-at-collecting-dusk-217197.php
he only had it for 3 weeks!
Someone's been humping their PS3...
wow, just wow...
>he only had it for 3 weeks!
And he never even wiped it down or put a dust cover on it? Disgusting. Can't people even be trusted to be responsible for the things they own anymore? Or will we start needing signs to come with soap that remind us to use it for bathing?
And people whine about signs that say "this coffee is hot" being unnecessary. Apparently some folks just need everything spelled out.
WARNING: THIS ELECTRONIC DEVICE NEEDS TO BE PLUGGED IN TO WORK.
WARNING: CAN CAUSE INJURY IF USED AS A WEAPON.
"bwahahaha, the fools! The PS3 is designed to collect dust with it's new dust-attractant coating! Then when they go wrong, we can refuse to repair them unless they pay us more money! It's a win win situation!" - Imaginary gloating of a PS3 CEO.
So it's Sony's fault this toolbox doesn't have the common sense to take care of his shit? Sony's warranty clearly states customer neglect as one of the things that void it. Those pictures up there can't be described as anything but neglect. Sony wins this round, sorry.
I'm on Sony's side - it is evident that the console was abused i.e filthy; it should not be that dirty after three weeks. That's insane. If someone brought that back to my store I wouldn't replace it. That kind of filth isn't covered by the warranty - I'm not bloody surprised it didn't work. The owner was negiligent. Disgusting.
Maybe if it had better games. ;]
Okay if this is a health issue.. How does the $150 that Sony wants eliminate the health problem?
I'm fine with the reason this thing is foul and the dust prob shorted traces on the board and is not covered buy warranty, but that is not what Sony told this guy.
I didnt have to buy it to tell you that thing is a shiny dust collector :|
I think I read in that little pamphlet that came with my PS3 that "taking a massive steaming deuce on the console may void your warranty". Yup... I think it's on page 3 or 4.
Anyone on Sony's side is a tard, There reason they won't repair it is because of health and safty hazards for the technician....give me a break! R U kidding me!!?!?!?! Idiot's
