Elysian Tail: Dust is an XNA-developed game by Dean Dodrill that is currently in its Pre-Alpha phase. There are two very interesting things about this particular title. First of all, it looks absolutely stunning, and even in its early stages, appears to look better than anything that has ever gone before on XNA. Second of all, it's sort of a furry game.
Dean Dodrill is notable enough to appear on a Furry Wiki, where he is credited as an animator for the Jazz Jackrabbit series. Dust appears to be based on a film that he has been working on for quite some time. Despite the fact that furries will be all over this thing, it doesn't look like Dodrill himself subscribes to the Yiff lifestyle, so I think his game wll be safe for human consumption.
That's a good thing, too, because it looks absolutely gorgeous and the gameplay appears to be incredibly promising. Check out a video after the jump and try to tell me that if this was released on the Community Games Channel, you wouldn't consider buying it. You'd be a liar.

That looks tight as hell... wow. Maybe the XNA won't be completely useless after all. Hopefully titles like this and Dishwasher will help set the standards really high for games that make it through the approval process.
Good lord, this looks amazing! As long as its priced no more than 800 points, I'll be getting this immediately - which was my same stance for Dishwasher.
That looks positively gorgeous. But don't worry Jim the furry community will surely make this not fit for consumption as soon as they get their hands on the characters.
Not only does it look better than most XNA games, but it's a PRE-ALPHA that looks better than most XNA games. Can't wait to see how awesome this is when it's actually finished.
I'm not gonna get my hopes up just yet...I'll have to see the pricing structure/total content included...now that that is out of the way...this looks good...really good
That's pre-alpha? Wow. I guess it's an artist so that's the more polished part, but damn...
Also anyone saying OMGWAT FURRIES? is being retarded. Why does anything with anthropomorphic characters need to be immediately associated with that crap now? Last I checked there's a relatively huge catalog of fucking awesome video game characters that would classify under that, but nobody was complaining back then...
Wow, that looks pretty amazing. Consider me interested.
Also, I'm with Wedge here, I've liked a lot of anthropomorphic videogame characters quite apart from the baggage that some freaky individuals have loaded them with on the internet in reccent years. This game is dripping style, maybe this guy should be working at a higher level than XNA.
The profile pic of the cloaked cat/whatever gives off a VG Cats vibe.
This is amazing for a pre-alpha. And I can't believe that people are saying that it won't be worth more than $10. A trip your standard movie theater is around $10 just for the ticket, not including any food or drinks--and that's a one-time thing.
$10 is also enough to get you *two* grande Starbucks drinks (and change).
I think we can afford to maybe not be so stingy with the cash monies.
you guys seem to undermine the power of XNA. XNA just provides you with specific libraries that aid in developing the game. It is very possible to build a AAA quality game using XNA studio. It enables those basement developers to make a game in this life time since it gives them some libraries which enable them to skip months maybe years of development.
Much like how microsoft gives you a ton of built in classes to do some things like connect to databases in their .net framework which removes some of the grunt work and does it for you.
This looks amazing. Provided it doesn't go the the Eternity's Child's route, ie. beautiful to look at but garbage to play, then I'll be buying it for sure.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Just goes to show, if you are creating an XNA game, helps to have a good artist to give a game that much needed x factor.
This is an alpha build O_O ??!
There needs to be more games with anthropic animal characters. I'm no furry, I'm just sick of Space Marines.
XBLA at the least!? God damn I wish I could animate characters like that.
The game looks brilliant though, especially for a XNA game.

Well seeing that most of the games are complete garbage (clocks, body massagers?) I don't really blame people for underestimatiing it.
