Dust 514, CCP's first-person shooter outlet through which the EVE Online universe will reach consoles, won't require an actual subscription in order to play. Instead, the game will use real money-based micro-transactions at its "virtual items marketplace," according to Eurogamer.
To me, it sounds like a free-to-play model, except we're still paying the $60 entry fee for Dust 514. And if you're using an Xbox 360, you still have to pay the Xbox LIVE bill. Honestly, it's like the worst of both worlds.
However, I may be willing to suck it up if it means finally getting into EVE, even if it is by way of a completely separate game. I want to be able to tell awesome nerd stories about my virtual escapades too, dammit!
As for the picture up there, a standard search for "Dust 514" resulted in that little guy to pop up on Google. Seeing as how Internet law dictates my obligation to go with the most entertaining search result presented to me, I had no other choice.

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

I'd post my argument on how Free to Play MMOs shouldn't be taken seriously (especially ones that charge $60 on top...), but I'm too lazy. Find it around comment 10 or so.
Even if you didn't like MMOs, if you're
A) An intelligent person
B) A Gamer
C) Someone who has 40 hours a week to dedicate to one game
You'll love EVE. I'm literally forcing myself not to play it, because I know I'll love it. It was particularly excruciating to resist temptation when I found the game for $5 last week, with a free month...I had my paypal info ENTERED before I closed the window!
See, I wish your PC could handle it, because:
360 game + 12 month subscription = $110 (plus you're not getting the full game; you're getting strung along by pay content)
Eve Online + 7 months = $110
It's fairly close.
While microtransactions in the game do sound like a bad idea, it could easily not be. So far from what I've heard it seems like you can't outright just buy good shit, being a higher lvl/rank gives you access to buy it, and since such a heavy emphasis is being placed on isk for your equipment and everything (also just note that in eve, when you lose your ship its gone. Dead, you don't "respawn" in your ship. The fittings are either dead or looted by someone else most likely :P, so I wouldn't be surprised if the microtransactions were for things you could get for isk, but instead of brokering contracts with some power block for the isk or working with your outfit to get it yourself you could buy it.
Of course I could be completely wrong but I hope and have some faith in them not screwing it up, eve has never been "player" friendly exactly. Your not some hero entering a new world with everything positive to look forward too, your a pod pilot being thrown into an evil unjust world full of people that'll kill you more then half the time and you don't just get stuff handed to you. I hope dust is the same ^^
Sorry not game related, just thought you might like to know.
