Dungeons and Dragons Online going free-to-play this summer photo

The MMO landscape continues to evolve. Turbine’s MMO Dungeons and Dragons Online will become a free-to-play MMO in North America this summer when a free “digital upgrade” is offered to every player. Subtitled “Eberron Unlimited,” the upgrade will obliterate the game’s old monthly fees and usher in a game-specific store where players can buy items, hirelings, and expansion packs. It will also raise the level cap.

Players who insist on paying a monthly fee still can. Instead of paying for the pleasure of playing, they will become a “DDO VIP,” and receive “priority server access” as well as “premium access” to expansions, a monthly allotment of 500 Turbine Points, and ten character slots.

“Our team has spent years crafting DDO Unlimited into a powerhouse experience featuring cutting-edge graphics, a kick-ass combat system, high level content, and cutting-edge social tools, said Kate Paiz, Senior Producer. "Today marks a major milestone as we prepare to launch the world’s most exciting free MMO."

Turbine’s beta program for Dungeons and Dragons: Eberron Unlimited launched yesterday and registration for it can be found on the new DDO Web site. If you're down -- and you should be, DDO is highly underappreciated -- head on over: there's probably a line or something.

So the DDO and the expansion pack Eberron Unlimited will be free?! Why's that? Is business not doing well?

I'll wait to see if the pay stuff is required to have a good experience.

Neat. Haven't played this since it first launched, and back then it was one of those "interesting concept... but" games, where more time in the cooker might just be what it needs. I'll definitely be giving it another try.

I pledge hereby that I shalt not play a game that selleth items and favours to gank non paying players with.

BTW Monthly fees are fine with me. But if it's "pay 20 bucks and win" - it's way too crooked for me. All kinds of supporter stuff - like cool things that DON'T give an advantege, priority server response or alike are also OK way to get the money and I don't mind them.

Chronic: theyre doing just fine. Its just most people hear DDO and go "wow, people still play that?" which is horrible for attracting new people. so its a somewhat low pop game. Hopefully this will reverse that.

I'm always on the fence about this idea. On the one hand, it offends my sense of "meritocracy" when it comes to MMOs. You want the loot? Clock in the time like everyone else.

But if you think of time as ... literally money in the case of MMOs (i.e. not just opportunity cost but actual subscription fees), how does that not translate to "he who pays the most, gets the most loot." In a sense that's what the dedicated MMO raiders are doing: clocking more time & thereby paying more.

But on the other hand, everyone is paying the same flat fee. So those who play more are actually getting more value for the fee, so their time is, in concept, worth a bit less.

I dunno, it still doesn't sit right with me. If people want stuff, they should have to kick some ass to get it, not scan a credit card.

Well I'll give anything a try if it's free. Well besides the games where it's free so paying players have people to grind on...

I played this when it launched and would be still if it had had some solo content. They added it in there but I was already on to new games by then. I recently went back and had a great time with it. I am certain that it will be worth it for free. Dibs on rogue!

I enjoyed the beta up until I ran headfirst into the GROUP OR DIE content. Which, sadly, began directly after the tutorial.

Also: lol Eberron

I tried the game, and got to the second town solo without problem, yes with some classes its hard, but make sure to choose warforged sorcerer, take inscribed plating as one of your first perks, and the repair skill....

you end up with a offensive caster that can self heal, and do decent meelee damage with the firey hand wraps from the 4th quest.

but you do run into content where you have to group somewhere in the middle of the second town.

@frohike:

the devs have stated that though there'll be an ingame cash shop[ for gear, the best gear in the game will still only be available via endgame dungeonz
