Dungeon Overlord beta could be a Keeper photo

Sony Online Entertainment released a new social game by Night Owl Games on Facebook called Dungeon Overlord. It's basically Dungeon Keeper for Facebook. You build a dungeon by building rooms and hallways on tiles and by upgrading them. Build a Tavern to attract Thieves for instance, or build a Library to spawn a Warlock who needs a bed to sleep in. You can even rename your creatures for a more personal touch.

Income comes from gold, crystal, iron and food. Goblins will scurry around to mine and build your rooms, which gives the game a bit more of an active feel than CityVille and the like. The usual social game timers come into play with resources generated and consumed every hour, or spawn times for new creatures when you unlock their prerequisites.

The game offers a lot of information to manage, which makes me feel like it's more directed at a "hardcore social games" crowd than your average soccer mom. There is also an overworld which tells me I can invade towns and castles with Orcs, while Warlocks provide research points you invest in technology. It hints at a long-term social game with more than depth than you would expect. What madness!

It's still in beta and some things are a bit obtuse, like resources being dropped on the ground that you can click on. Are they bonus resources? Do I need to click them? Is this thing on the ground an item or just artwork of a room? And why is there no Crystal or Iron counter? It's certainly a different breed than your typical Zynga design though, so if you are into social games and Dungeon Keeper it might be worth checking out during an hour of boredom.

We definitely need a new Dungen Keeper, hopefully Dungeons will be able to live up to the original. That game was wonderful and definitely deserves a worthy sequel, not something like this (or Dungeon Keeper 2).

With all due respect, but a facebook game just doesn't do it for me. Didn't EA sell the rights for some online Korean Dungeon Keeper ? Haven't heard anything about that one.

I've never been interested in a Facebook game before this (except for Assassin's Creed Project Legacy, that game freaking rocks!) but this sounds really fun. I may have to give it a try, and research what this "Dungeon Keeper" is

I've been playing this. Considering what Facebook games are about, this is rather awesome. It's a shame it'll bomb, though, thanks to the anti-soccer mom interface. Really deserves users.

As far as I can tell, you have to actively pick up the resources. By which I mean you put the resources into magical sacks so your minions can run over and pick them up.

These are the same minions who mined the resources for you in the first place. I guess they just throw it aside and wait for you to say you want the gold after all?

Same here. This could be a huge step for you, me, and hardcore gamers everywhere.

Of course, it could be Lord of Ultima all over again and get boring after a week.

Or we could all just play this instead, and leave the soccer moms to their soccer mom shennanigans.

Neat little game. Made me want to actually learn what Dungeon Keeper was all about. My father in law has a copy of Dungeon Keeper 2, installed it last night after i got bored of watching random resources pop in DOverlord and played it, fun as hell. Definitely want to try and find a copy of Dungeon Keeper now.

@shaka - I don't know how original it's trying to be when one of the first things it asks in that beta signup is which Dungeon Keeper games you've played.

Nothing obtuse about it. You HAVE to manually click the resources that accumulate in your mines. It's the oldest Zynga trick in the book, they need to make sure that players log in every day to pick up their sh*t. It's what brings in revenue.

Game itself is addictive as crack, although it's only my third day playing. Would much rather have DK3 than this pale immitation though.

I would rate DO as almost alpha level. nowhere near beta. Remember how when Windows would first release a new OS it would have more bugs than an ant hill? these are some of the bugs with DO

BSOD blue screen of death just like in old windows
BOTD bug of the day, every day they make a new patch which crashes the system for hours.

The game is addicting, but don't plan on playing it for more than a few hours at a time. The auto crash feature has a random interval ranging from hours to a few seconds. Yesterday it was 3 mouseclicks. Today, for the last 12 hours, the app won't even TRY to activate.

If they ever manage to convince me they can go 24 hours without loading a new bug I might spend mpney on the game. But I don't expect that to happen anytime soon. I guess they just don't compile and test their upgrades before implementing them.
