Duels of the Planeswalkers pulling people into paper Magic photo

The tenth edition of card Magic: The Gathering is popular with the paper folk. While I wasn’t told any hard numbers at Gen Con '09, I learned that Wizards of the Coast is excited about the game’s growth in its latest core edition. I asked Magic brand manager Mark Purvis if the sales boom had anything to do with the recent Xbox LIVE Arcade release, Duels of the Planeswalkers. According to him, there’s evidence suggesting that people exposed to the downloadable title are seeking a way into the paper game. And it’s all because of a single card and a bonus offer.

“It’s hard to put an exact number, the number of people that have come into paper Magic because of Duels of the Planeswalkers,” Purvis tells me. “We’ve sold over 200,000 copies of the game and over 500,000 people have downloaded the demo at this point.”

“The sales have been really steady. I think it the initial bump of being number one for two weeks in a row really put it on people’s radar who wouldn’t normally try Magic but they saw that this game was really popular and checked it out.”

“One thing that the game has built into is a unique code where people can get a foil Planeswalkers card mailed out to them,” he continues. “What they would also get in that package is instructions how to pick up free Magic cards at local retailers. We have anecdotal evidence from retailers that that’s working and that people are coming into their stores and saying ‘I was told to come to this story and you would give me free Magic cards.’ We built these half-decks, or sample-decks, which are thirty cards, you can play Magic with them and it gives you a taste of the paper game.”

It’s not hard to imagine that the XBLA title had some effect on the paper game, but its nice to hear a bit of a confirmation. More paper players translates to more spirits to crush in local hobby stores. Also, more players means more possibilities on the downloadable front -- something I can’t disagree with.

Anecdotal support: I played the demo, realized the game wasn't as complicated as I thought (at least on the surface) and picked up a starter pack to fiddle with.

They really should have priced it at $5 and used it as a promotional device.

I used to play the paper game since early '94 - eventually at the second-highest tournament level (sub-pro-tour) . It was great fun, but a unwieldy amount of rules bloat and arcane interactions wound up leaving a game where you needed to know minutiae of the card interactions to win at that level. I have since moved on another CCG that I find more exciting and dynamic - and multi-player oriented. I can say that Wizard's latest rules clarifications and simplifications will make the game easier to attract new players, but I still feel that the game is undoubtedly dying. The company is losing players and printing more product. It's unfortunate that this may be the case, although I hope it's not.

I am glad to see them finally getting their act together, they always had very poor marketing in my opinion.

Yeah, I can say that the digital release can positively affect tabletop sales, as I bought Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne after hearing about 'em on XBLA.

A small correction: the new core set is not the tenth edition, it's called Magic 2010 and it's technically the eleventh edition.

Magic 2010 has been doing amazingly well (thanks mostly to all the new cards in it) when compared to older core sets which always sold like crap (thanks to all the reprints of cards that everyone bought years ago). Pretty much every store in my area that sells Magic cards has sold out of Magic 2010 products.

I bet the game has really helped out with this, especially when it comes with a free foil card that's actually worth owning and using in a tournament-caliber deck. The two free 30-card decks were also a nice surprise, though I can't find any stores nearby to get them from. D:

Yeah, the game's not that great aside from promoting the paper game, but it's cheaper than most XBLA titles today ($10 as opposed to the more recently standard $15) and you get a free $20 promo card and two 30-card starter decks. I'd buy it twice if I could. :O

I was pretty big into Magic in the 90's but lost all my cards do to some flood damage, and it just got to be way too complicated and was edged out completely because of my budget for other vices. This XBLA game was a perfect way for me to get back into some casual playing of it without having to sink a bunch of money into it. The only real problem I have with it is the horrible community of people playing it online who will quit the moment you pull out a good card and put it into play. The quitters are just amazingly rampant and have ruined the online aspect of it. I immediately go and down-vote them but sometimes I'll go through five or six aborted matches before I get someone who has the stones to play a full match.

I got into magic earlier this year and enjoy it. I am not looking forward to Zandikar though because Shadowmoor will be illegal...

Has there been any mention of this getting ported to the ps3?

Fuck yeah, I love those games. I wonder what expansions (if any) you got for them.

I bought DotP specifically for the promo, I didn't care about the game. I still haven't played it (mostly because I don't have a 360, but I bought it on my friend's game) but the Promo was a slick deal. I'm really glad it's bringing new players into the game, especially after M10 which was a fantastic reboot, and Zendikar, the first new set after having the new fantastic basic land cards. It's the best thing to happen to Magic for a while (since Ravnica, *swoons*)

I used to play Magic a lot. I think I'll pick up Planeswalkers and see if my interest gets re-sparked.
