Duels of the Planeswalkers getting an expansion this fall photo

Magic: The Gathering -- Duels of the Planeswalkers is getting bigger. At a PAX event Saturday night, co-publisher Wizards of the Coast announced “Duel of the Dragon,” an expansion for the downloadable title that adds more cards, decks, and opponents.

One of the cards added is a “new” Planeswalker.

The expansion is slated to hit on Xbox LIVE Marketplace this fall. The price and exact date are unknown at this time. We’ve contacted Wizards of the Coast for the exact details, but the publisher didn’t respond to our inquiry immediately.

Just to be clear, here: the expansion doesn’t appear to add the ability to fully customize decks, despite the new cards being offered. We know this is a sore spot for a quite a few of you, so feel free to complain or defend in the comments. (Only pansies need to customize, anyway. Nyah.)

when we are able to build our own decks, than people are going to start building the same one-strategy deck and using it all the time over and over.

Sweet...if its not too expensive, then i might pick it up.

More variety is always good, and otogi guy has a point...the downside of fully customisable decks is the people who construct the ones that suck the fun right out of the game =P

How about you let me choose what land to use in a multi-colored deck so you don't stick me with not being able to use two cards in a hand? -_-

im on the fence. while having fully customizable decks is the way it SHOULD be, what otogi guy said is probably quite close to the truth.

still, this game is essential to someone like me who has friends scattered all over the place, though nothing beats the real deal.

mtg's joy comes from building a deck yourself, fine tuning it and winning.

I really want customization, but I'll be glad to try out some new decks anyway. As much as I enjoyed this game, I haven't played it in a while because I'm tired of playing the same old precons.

While customizing a deck in magic is hella fun when I actually think about it what otogi guy and peachboy said is true and would probably cause interest to be lost faster due to all decks being similar. The news of them expanding on the game itself though is fantastic, fun times.

Cool. Personally, I loved DotP. Even without customization.

I won DotP from Gamer Limit and I gotta say, I thought the lack of customization would be an issue, but the decks are really fun and appeal to a few different types of play styles so I think all is good without customization.

what i dont understand is the whole "Planeswalker" thing. In the cardboard game I thought a Planeswalker is a card that acts as your secondary player (not a creature card) with some special abilities and small amount of life points.
In this digital game, the PlanesWalker is just an avatar.

@otogi guy

A Planeswalker in the paper game does act as something similar to what you described. That would also be true in the digital game, but they decided to leave them out of the game to keep things less complicated and also because it would be weird flavor-wise. It doesn't make sense (for example) for Chandra to cast a spell that summons Chandra onto the field to aid her.

@Brad

By "new Planeswalker card" do you mean "new Planeswalker avatar"? It makes no sense to me to add a Planeswalker card to the game at this point for the reasons I already stated and also for the fact that it would unbalance the decks (especially when that Planeswalker is Nicol Bolas, which I assume it is by the name of the expansion). I'm pretty sure Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker would dominate when everyone is playing with precons.

You know what is better than this very limited game? I'll tell you. Wagic. A homebrew for the psp, but also running on pc.
