If the rising cost of living makes you grumpy, be prepared to stroke your beard and complain (or if you don't have one, get working on growing it out.) The Playstation DualShock 3 controller finally has a US release date of April 15th, which is great if you've been cursing the day SIXAXIS was conceived. The price point is $54.99, which is not so great. I know this is the retro kid in me talking, but I have to admit to feeling a little shaken up by finding myself suddenly realizing a new controller will cost me roughly the same as a game. Of course, it's been that way for awhile, which I conveniently forgot thanks to my eternally wretched memory ( I think I blocked it out due to denial.) Rumble has never meant a whole lot to me, so maybe I just don't grasp the importance as a racing game enthusiast would. Will you guys fork out $55 bucks for one of these? [Via Kotaku]

Naughty? Like 4 controller naughty?
If rumble is all I get for $55 than I am a tough sell. Maybe is someone gives me a sack of cash. Also Collette quite being prejudiced against us facial hair deficient folk (I'm 24 just unhairy in general).
Methinks it's time to import a ceramic white.
worse than RROD.
Sony is forcing all early adopters to drop and extra 60$...
when will rumble controllers be standard in all skus?
will they just keep milking people by selling consoles with nerfed controllers?
what a bunch of fags.
i got a white dual shock 3. feels a bit heavier than the regular remote but i like it. price point sucks but eh. seems like a necessary investment if you plan to pick up metal gear solid 4 though.
the rumble is great in warhawk as well.
Are you allowed to trade in your old six-axis to get this at a reduced price?
other than the rumble and weight of the remote, its not so different than the other remote. the only good news to come out of this is the other model controller should drop in price.
I can finally buy a PS3! woot!
about time dammit :)
lol... my god, what about the people who bought a set of 4 controllers for multiplayer games? talk about major ass rape with a telephone pole, they've got to shell out an extra 240 $ just to upgrade ahhha omfg...
does no one else see the problem with what sony is doing? holy shit EXTORTION BITCHES! =)
being a cheap bastard FTW!
Isn't this only like five bucks more than a regular controller? If I needed/wanted another controller, I'd probably pick it up over the SixAxis, but I doubt I'd replace controllers just for the heck of it.
Of course I don't have a PS3, so I'm not affected either way. Huzzah!
Caff makes a good point though. With the DS3 Sony is pretty much admitting that the SixAxis controller was a mistake. It'd be pretty cool of them to have some sort of trade in offer to make it up to the consumer. Doubly cool given Sony's history of PR.
I spent more than $55 when I imported it. It's easily worth it for me. Rumble if done well, adds a lot to games.
@caffine
I doubt it.
Also, plan on the price of Sixaxis tanking VERY soon. If you're smart, you'll import one today so you can sell it before the price crash occurs. A used Sixaxis was worth $25 trade in credit back in January, expect it to be around $5 or so when the DS3 launches because stores will be flooded with them. It's not an issue I suppose if you want a second controller, but with me, I tell my friends to bring their own (I do when I visit) controllers. I hate nothing more than getting stuck using the shitty 3rd party controller that's covered in pizza grease or something from the last time it was used by their 8 year old cousin.
$50 is insane for a controller. The Wavebird was $30 last gen and that had to include a wireless receiver for each controller. With the new systems the wireless is built into the system.
I've gotta say though, as far as the next-gen systems go, PS3 is actually the most reasonable since it has a rechargeable battery built in. That certainly justifies the cost a bit more.
With the 360 you need to buy all sorts of accessories and battery packs for multiple controllers.
But that's balanced out by the fact that if you want 4 DS3's you're going to have at least 1 useless Sixaxis that came with your PS3, so that's an extra $55 you shouldn't have had to spend.
3 extra 360 controllers + Play and Charge Kit + 3 extra batteries = ~$205
4 DS3's = $220
So 360 is a little cheaper now, but once Sony gets around to making the DS3 the standard controller, the PS3 will be the better value.
@MaxVest
They're nice in white, trust me. :D
As far as $55, that's actually not bad at all, considering the Sixaxis alone is $50. I'd definitely pay an extra $5 for rumble, even though it should have been included in the first place.
Try playing Uncharted without rumble, and then with. You'll never go back.
@surf314
you need to man up there son..i've had a full on rugged lumberjack with his own beard growing on my face since i was about 15..
i'm only 23 and my beard never goes away so here's some strok'in of the ol scruff for you, you overpriced vibrator.
also, really do not want...really do not need.
Just in time for MGS4
Are they going to pack these in with the new PS3s? I can't see myself buying one until they do.
That's no moon, that's a space station!
Will get.
Its only $5...
And dammit I posted this first lol.

Whenever I'm playing CoD4 (on 360) and my battery runs low which results in the rumble being turning off, it immediately takes away some of the excitement of the game.
Sony failed when it didn't include the rumble in the SixAxiS. It makes a big difference. Uncharted is awesome without rumble, but the beating heart thing with the controller when your health is low, and when you jump and take on wounds just adds that extra layer of immersion that puts any game (if it's done right) over the top.
It would be nice if they had a much cheaper wired version.
@ imako.....i disagree. Wireless is the way to go today. Hate the wired 360 controllers.
@bhive01: I enjoy games a lot more when I don't know what I'm missing. For example, when I found out Kane and Lynch had sound, enabling the sound really opened up a whole new world of gameplay for me.
Jesus, $54? Par for the course, though. One of the reasons the Wii is the only current-gen system I own is because how damned expensive this "next-gen" is. PS2, Wii, and DS for the win.
I already imported a ceramic white one for 60. I greatly enjoyed my rumble in DMC4. And it won't blend in with my other two Sixaxis controllers.
@bhive
I totally agree with you
This doesn't effect me until they are placed in-package with the system. Because then I will buy a PS3. Until then... be glad it's not $60 total, like the Wiimote/Nunchuk combo rape. I mean... have you ever SEEN what's inside those things!? It's damn near next to nothing. Apparently white plastic costs more than other colors.
question: just HOW much heavier is the DualShock 3 compared to the SIXAXIS? are we talking wireless 360 controller heavy? because if so, i don't know if i'm going to buy this. i miss my rumble, but i'm one of the rare ones that actually like how light the SIXAXIS is.
Fifty-five dollars...for a controller?
WHY SONY WHY!?!?!?
55 bucks? uh no?
That better come with 2 Dualshock 3 controllers, life support, that cure for AIDS, and a free game.
I ordered a Dual Shock from Asia for less than that. In fact the total including shipping ended up being less than the listed MSRP. Plus it arrived in 4 days which is nice.
There are still people who don't have one yet? How sad.
Remember when systems came with controllers? Yea.
When they start putting out PS3s with 2 Dualshock 3 controllers for under $400 let me know, I'll shit myself and suck Sony's gold-plated cock, cuz I'm sure that's what they're spending all their money on.
I really dislike this controller. It was fine for the 90s, but times of have changed, Sony.
The convex sticks. Why? They should be concave, Sony. CONCAVE!
The triggers really bother me as well. They're too squishy.
Also, to answer Colette's question, I really do think it is important only because I've gotten used to it.
Seriously, when my batteries are dying on my 360 pad and the rumble auto-shuts off it feels odd. I'm not getting the rattle from my guns firing or if I'm playing Forza, I can't feel if the tires are slipping on the car. It's something I've gotten used to.
If I had a PS3 I'd have to swallow the fact that I'm paying so much for a controller and just buy it.
@ skullivan

Don't forget to take into account that the Sony controllers have motion control. It may not be used right some of the time, but it's there. It's not like you're paying extra for nothing.
Already got mine from Japan, definitely worth it.
yay! Last Gen is finally here!!
Honestly, why so shocked people? Sixaxis right up until now was price tagged at $50. So um, 5$ more than what the Sixaxis is creating havok in the interwebz? lawlz.
I will fork out the money for ONE of these pads. If my friends want to play a multiplayer game, they can suck it up and use a sixaxis or bring their own DS3.
I'm not running a freakin' arcade here.
Who out there actually CARES enough to buy 4 of these things? Are your friends all whiny bitches who will stop playing with you if they don't have rumble? And other than sports games (which have little to no need for rumble), what 4 player multiplayer games are you playing at one place on one screen? That's what ONLINE is for now!
i might just get one early from play-asia for $59.00.it depends on what games come out befor the US dual shock release that use the rumble feature.
I bought one from http://www.japanvideogames.com/ a few weeks ago. They ship from Cali I believe so you don't have to wait as long. If the weight of the sixaxis bothered you before its definatly fixed here.
@poonster
A lot of the games I play on my PS3 already support rumble, Uncharted, DMC4, COD4, and Heavenly Sword has an update for it, all have rumble.
It definatly feels better, and stays charged just as long.
I just find it absolutely hilarious with people complaining. First complain there is no DS3, now complain when there is. Some people just need to complain I guess even when its not rational.
Had the white one for awhile now :)
I figured they were going to do this. I’ve never bought a new PS3 controller, because I knew they were going to release the DS3 here eventually, and I don’t really own any split-screen multiplayer games. But an extra $5 for a feature that should’ve been included from the get-go is a little irksome. What they should do is charge $50 for the DS3, and lower the price of the Sixaxis to, maybe, $35.
Remember when controllers were around $35? I still thought that was too much money.
55 is a bit much in my opinion...
