dTunes Editor's Week, Day 3: Rey Gutierrez photo

There’s nothing better on the planet that stimulates my creative senses and inspires my complicated gaming mind than videogames and a good soundtrack. I’m addicted and attracted to music videos, short films of eye-candy, visual stimulation and at times, even good music. (Hur Hur) Sure, there’s tons of movies that are guilty of being the ultimate piece of cinema that have inspired hundreds of filmmakers, but I’m quite the opposite. Give me a good videogame story, or for this instance, an epic music video, and you’ve got me whimpering like a puppy with a box of crayons, ready to shoot his next masterpiece.

When I’m not working on Destructoid video features, reviews and originals, I’m sitting down with my production team shooting, directing and editing music videos for indie and national acts. I am extremely blessed to both work and be inspired in two of my favorite mediums: music and video games. You can get a quick glimpse of that right here!

I’ve gathered only a few tunes and music videos from my epic catalog of all-time favorites -- I hope you walk away pleasantly surprised with my extremely diverse taste in music, and have a better idea of what it’s like to be me.

But be warned. The ending is the best part!

The Deftones - "Be Quiet & Drive (Far Away)"

Hands down my favorite band of all time. The Deftones' music is perfect for any unsettling mood or perfect Kodak moment. I’ve cried, laughed, yelled and made love to many Deftones tracks. They’ve been described as alternative rock, rap-metal, progressive rock to dream pop and back to experimental rock. Robert Smith and David Gahan embodied in one Mexican -- you get The Deftones' front man, Chino Moreno.

Listen to White Pony or Saturday Night Wrist now. If you want something far more experimental and lucid, give Moreno's side project Team Sleep a hit.

Nine Inch Nails - "The Perfect Drug"

Followed by my favorite band of all time, is my second favorite music video of all time. I’ve embedded the special version of Nine Inch Nails’ "The Perfect Drug" video above, which highlights some neat “making-of” moments from some key set pieces. You just don’t see this sort of production value in music videos these days -- luckily, with the internet lending itself so well to video now, we no longer have to rely on the MTVs of the world to highlight such great works of art.

The music video for "The Perfect Drug" totally transformed me back in 1997 and began my path to do what I do for a living. Not long after that in the same year, I played Metal Gear Solid on the original PlayStation and it wouldn’t take long until I blended both of my loves into one solid piece of motion 8 years later. I may have been born on a summer day in 1983, but 1997 was definitely the year where I learned who I wanted to be. Deep shit, son.

Kanye West - "Flashing Lights"
He may be the industry’s biggest douchebag and his diet is made up of fish sticks, but I undoubtedly believe the man is a masterful producer and artist. Referencing everything from Jawas to sports cars, Kanye West in my opinion is one of the defining artists of our generation when it comes to universally accepted rap music. Jay-Z discovered him and in return he’s helped perfect the Jay-Z sound, with sick tracks like "Encore" and "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)."

Honorable mentions (producers): Timbaland, Missy Elliot, Don Gilmore, Martin Kierszenbaum, Robin Beanland, Ron Wasserman, Ryan Tedder & The Neptunes (aka...)

N.E.R.D. - "Spaz"
The dynamic trio consisting of Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo, and vocal partner Shay Haley make up Nothing Ever Really Dies. It's another masterful producing team that has created beats for Justin Timberlake, Snoop Dogg, Britney Spears, Nelly, and Busta Rhymes -- just to name a few. This talented team has quietly been dishing out beats and launching career’s since the ’90s and have recently become household names.

I religiously purchase anything and everything that is produced by them.

Michael Jackson - "Scream"
If Michael Jackson’s "Thriller" was an epic piece of music video history, "Scream" would be, in my opinion, its well deserved futuristic sequel. Holding the Guinness World Record for the most expensive music video ever at $7 million to produce, Jackson’s "Scream" is not only my favorite MJ track, but my favorite music video of all time.

A perfect blend of rock and pop, Mark Romanek's directed black and white space epic is any music video director’s candy shop, followed by Tina Landon’s amazing choreography. Can you believe this was shot almost 15 years ago?

Kelly Clarkson - "Already Gone"
Written by one of my favorite producers, Ryan Tedder, "Already Gone" is actually the track I’m listening to over and over again right now. I’m a huge fan of pop music, and I hope I’ve made it clear that I’m big on a well-produced track and its writer. No matter how indie or underground one can be, pop music will always be the definitive space for experimentation. C’mon, Lil Wayne releasing a rock album? Only in pop, ladies and gentlemen.

I haven’t made any sorta “true” emotion or thought publicly clear to any of my friends or family of what’s transcended in my life personally the past week. I feel like this blog post is all about getting to know the Destructoid staff through their love of music, so I’m taking this small opportunity to illustrate how music defines moments in my life. Right now, it’s this song. Every single word in this tune speaks volumes; Ryan Tedder has done a masterful job of digging in deep and expressing what I’m feeling right now and what I’ve done. Letting go of something great, to fully achieve every single goal and dream like scenario I have waiting for me in the wings. That’s all I got to say.

I appreciate you guys reading this, and giving me a slot to express some of my personal traits and current feelings about life, love and most importantly... music!

I can't hold a music discussion without sounding like an arrogant jerk, so this is me smiling and walking away backwards.

Diverse, quite so, NIN, Kelly Clarkson, and N.E.R.D. are pretty far apart all right.

LOVE N.E.R.D!

Even the new album, which is a bit pop sounding.

Anyone ever checked out Kenna? The Neptunes (aka the good people from N.E.R.D, Pharell and Chad) handle the tunes for his first album. Give him a listen! He's my favorite artist of this century.

Points for N.E.R.D., but mostly everything else is nothing most people don't already listening to. I thought the point of this was to introduce gamers to bands/musicians/artists that are more or less unheard of, or at least very underrated. I'm not criticizing, I like Kanye and MJ too, but the stuff on this list is really mainstream if you ask me.

The Perfect Drug is my favorite video ever. Back when it came out I was in high school, and when no one was looking I used to walk down the hall charging with umbrella like Trent with the sword in the video. It was dorky but badass, dorkass if you will.

I adore Deftones.

I'm still got my fingers cross for another Team Sleep album or another Far/Deftones collaboration now that Jonah and co. have reformed.
