Dtoid Movie Night: eXistenZ photo

Have you seen Hot Fuzz yet in theaters? No? Okay, go see that first, you'll thank me. If you prefer watching terrible movies though, we've got you covered. Last week's crappy gaming movie was Double Dragon, and this week it's eXistenZ. I don't pick them, it's all up to the Ventrilo crowd. With a name like eXistenZ it's either the best movie you've never seen or something you'll never want to watch twice. Willing to take that chance with a few dozen other Dtoiders? Tonight, just like every other Tuesday night, we're taking a leap of faith at 10 P.M. eastern standard time. Here's how to join us.

First download Ventrilo, then gank the login info here in our forum. Install Ventrilo, make an account, grab some food, login, and you'll see about thirty of us talking in various audio chat rooms. Just wander around until someone helps you with your settings, and then at 10 P.M. we'll reaveal the movie's secret location, so try to get there a little early.

If you've got any extra questions, feel free to ask them here in the comments.

Okay, here goes.

I liked eXistenZ.

Okay, so i watched it when i was about 15 or maybe younger, but thought it was really quite interesting. The more i read this blog, the stupider i feel.

Ugly phil is right, this is a fairly good film. If you count it as a gaming related flick, it's easily one of the best I've seen.

eXistenZ is a great movie! Of course, I also saw it when I was young, but I enjoyed it. It actually has a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes; which is pretty damn high for a "shitty movie night" movie.

Arrested Developer - updated the post a little bit. we just point ppl in the right direction.

i don't pick the movies, it's all up to the ventrilo crowd. so if you've got something you'd like to ridicule with the rest, join in this week and make some suggestions.

Offering this movie up to Shitty Movie Night is like throwing in Magnolia or American Psycho. Perhaps we should dub tonight "Misunderstood Movie Night".

no, ventrilo is just the VOIP, we use stage6 (fancy youtube) to host the video. We all sync it up and hit play. I don't have the link to where it is one stage, we try to keep it secretive so it doesnt get taken down like in the past. If you want the link ask Tehuberone, he's the man in charge.

and about people thinking it's a good movie. we're running out of video game movies that are easy to find on torrents (or some other methods), so suggestions are nice.

I can easily say this is the best video-game themed movie EVER MADE. and that's not saying too much. but really. great movie

It's a David Cronenberg movie that should say enough. Don't think it the best video game themed movie tho. Avalon holds that title.

eXistenZ is possibly one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It's horribly written, has a few thousand plot holes (that even the game-within-a-game excuse doesn't...excuse), really bad metaphorical connections and a dumb message. I can see the allure to think this movie is good, but on the base level it's an awkward stumbling through a poorly fleshed out idea supported only by the weirdness of Cronenberg that he has become known for. It would have been better had it only been 30 minutes long (if that), and if it wasn't based on the kind of fantastical idea of future videogames that only advertising execs and businessmen trying to capitalize on the game market have.

Well I think Lost in Translation is the worst movie I've ever seen. To each his own. Another movie I fucking hated was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind. That should stir up some hate...

Nah Bahamut, I'm with you on Eternal Sunshine. Sometimes weird for weird's sake just doesn't fly. My ex LOVED that movie and she didn't understand a single fucking thing that happened in it.

Best/Worse Ending Ever:
"Wait, how do we know this isn't the game?"

This movie is craptastic.

Shitty movie nights isn't about calling movies shitty, its about making fun of them and each other as we watch them. IMO, if you guys are getting riled over this, they should pick more movies like eXistenZ.

Here's another vote for "Existenz wasn't a bad movie".

Cronenberg is gonna hunt down every single one of you haters and do terrible things to you. FOOLS!

anyone that says that this was a good movie is a complete retard, or you some how think this is some good artistic movie, but it's not, it lacked utter direction and directing. This movie is an ABOMINATION.

Videodrome with James Woods is Cronenburg's early 80's equivalent and has obtuse references to Atari VCS in it. It's also one of the most underrated sci-fi films of all time.

I'm surprised by the love for this movie. I give credit to Cronenberg for at least trying to make an intelligent video game movie. eXistenZ had some catchy moments but ultimately the "is it the game or isn't it?" conceit was too close to the hackneyed "It was all just a dream!" device used in movies since the beginning of time.
