"At least we can upvote my brilliant comments"
I don't usually correct people's comments, but I found it ironically funny.
Did you do that on purpose?
Don't worry pal, I will not be downvoting (the majority of) your comments. I loves you too much.
Ppl like me however...
You have the option to receive emails when you get a reply. I think that feature is on by default. You also have a disqus page where you can view all your posts and replies to your posts which makes keeping track of your comments much easier. There's also a mini notification thing at the top of every comment box.
I would wear your down-vote as a badge of honor, good sir.
@Ace829
I don't mind disagreeing with people or arguing over points at all. It's kind of fun, as long as it doesn't turn into a childish name calling contest. As for Jim Sterling, I just don't like his approach on a lot of levels. I think it's so negative, especially next to the writers on Destructoid who seem to like gaming a lot. I could expand on that, but other people would turn it into a shouting match. I'll just say that it's much the same reasons why I hate the rise of the political pundit in the political entertainment world, and leave it at that.
That's what I'm worried about, just look at any article from ign and all the top comments are simple spam that require no thought, while the thought out responses are left in the abyss for no one to take notice.
Finally, everyone will be able to be both anonymous and androgynous on Destructoid, the way that everybody on the Internet ought to be.
Also, uncorrectable spelling errors, how we shall miss thee[red]eee[/red].
Think about it.
Under the new system, jimmyx's famous hatred for the 360 controller would NEVER HAVE HAPPENED.
I VOTE NAY!
The ranking system and post rating scare me though. I recall being on a site where posts could be rating and there were a lot of people who got pissed at getting negative ratings for no reason. I can't see this turning out well.
up-vote & earn ranks, I hate these things because they create a hierarchy. One of the things I liked about Dtoid is that it didn't have any of these things like other sites do. Everyone is pretty much the same here. When you see someone with a level 30 arguing with a level 4 people have a tendency to favor the higher level user because they think they know better because they've been on the site longer even if the level 4 had a better argument.
This kind of comment system emphasis quantity over quality. I hate the "like" button, I think it's much better to just tell the person directly that you like the comment. I've gotten some nice PMs and nice replies from people saying they like what I say, and adding a "like" button reduces that chances of that happening. Having someone tell me they appreciate me directly feels significantly better than them clicking a button that they could have done on accident. Also my favorite comments usually come from the same people, so if I frequently like their comments I feel like a stalker. That and I don't like having my comments being ranks by likes. I'll admit that on other sites with ranking when I write a particular good comment and I got 1 to no likes I feel disappointed.
Is their some sort of way that I can opt of seeing people's ranks and seeing what comments they like?
I think the move to disqus is a good one, but please take into consideration not having ranks, and removing the ability to like comments. Also I'm kind of sad to see BBCode go, because of Dtoid I've become somewhat of a [u]BBcode[/u] [u]master[/u], and now I have nothing to use it on. Well I still have blogging.
The thing is Jimmy X would get the most likes on the site. As it is he's one of the most popular people on this site, and had a Commentoid dedicated to him. I come to Dtoid for the conversations, not the trolls. Yeah sometimes they're funny, but I come here to have reasonable conversations with people and make awkward jokes.
Up-voting is iffy as well, particularly with the ratio of trolling comments. At least you didn't mention down-voting, because that would be sheer chaos the moment Jim Sterling made a news post. Up-voting alone might not be pretty in a Jim Sterling news post, since he has so many followers who either blindly accept whatever he says or who openly admit they are trolling by defending Jim. (There are dedicated anti-Jim posters as well, but they seem to be fewer in numbers, so they'll probably only amass a few upvotes on any anti-Jim comments.)
Yup that's another thing, just go to gametrailer's forums to get a big taste of that, your below level 6, your as good as troll in everybody eyes. I remember about 2 years ago there, someone made a thread of "do you take level 6 or lower users seriously", only to be followed by everybody sucking there own dick's and agreeing. Hopefully this site stay's a bit non-mainstream (in the way people think, because traffic is always good).
One thing I*strongly* dislike about comment systems with "downvotes" is that, instead of upvoting well-thought-out content and downvoting spam, people usually end up upvoting whatever fits their opinion, and downvoting the rest they don't agree with, regardless of their discussion value. This leads to a very broken feeling comments thread. Just look at any Reddit thread, try to have a meaningful discussion there, and you'll see what I mean. I propose we take out upvotes and downvotes. They have a huge chance of destroying comment threads and turning them into Reddit (that's a bad thing)
I also like how unnecessarily harsh and immature you are when it comes to posting about Jim and his opinions, but when you are called out on it, you try to act more mature, innocent and holier than thou. Just like how you judge Jim by how and what he types over the internet, so you shall be judged the same way.
You don't even care if you get banned like you've said before and I keep hoping it happens soon. Until then, making it so people won't be able to see your comments with the new comment system will be the next best thing.
Err I mean *presses Like-button on Scissors' comment*
I'm not sure about the rating system, but let's see how it works.
I'm sure that genuine, good discussion will get more votes than the trolls, so I think everything will be fine with that.
(I really hope I'm not proven wrong on that)
apart from that, i can't see what could go wrong. THANK YOU NIERO!
I also wouldn't worry about trolls getting all the likes. For one it won't matter; this isn't Kotaku with a "featured" comment system. Everyone can still read your stuff easily. Second, on all the sites I read that use disqus only good or funny comments get up voted. As far as ranks i don't think anyone really cares about that stuff. If anything it'll only encourage people to post quality stuff that earns more likes.
