DSiWare games aren't transferrable to new systems photo

If you're bored of your old DSi and fancy snagging a new color, then you might want to think again. Surprisingly, it's not come up before, but Nintendo Australia has revealed that DSiWare games are locked to the system they were downloaded on, meaning that, unlike with the PSP, you can't transfer files and are forced to play your games on your original machine. How rubbish.

On the PSP, transferring games from one PSP to another is very simple thanks to the magic of computers and USB cables. You can even transfer PlayStation Classic games from the PS3 to the PSP, complete with the required save files. It's a definite strength of the PlayStation Portable, and something the DSi doesn't even try to do.

Fortunately, Nintendo isn't so callous as to refuse data transfer in the case of a broken DSi. If you give your broken system to Nintendo, the platform holder will do a data tranfer for you, putting your old content on your replacement handheld. You'll have to send the replacement as well, and hope they send it back.

Nintendo gave no reason for this decision, but I know that there is no reason for it -- Nintendo simply didn't bother, because Nintendo is out of its depth when it comes to anything the modern gamer expects. In a way, you have to admire Nintendo's purity and unwillingness to allow for anything more complex than "games go here." On the other hand, c'mon, this is the year 2009. Get with the times.

wait a min I have suikoden on my ps3 and I want to transfer it fully to my psp
I can do that? I know I can use remote play but I'd like to have it on the psp so I can take the game on the go rather than being stuck within the range of the house.

Nintendo is like an old Miner who won't use the "fancy" new mining equipment, but keeps striking gold.

Well, Nintendo, like all the big 3, is greedy, and wants to make it very difficult for friends to share games. This prevents it, at least for dsiware.

@Psywolf: Yeah. I believe all PS1 games on the PSN Store are PS3/PSP Compatible.

I don't know if you can have/play a copy on both your PS3/PSP at the same time, but you should be able to transfer the game from your PS3 to your PSP, as if you where transferring a PSP only game from your PS3 to your PSP.

I had this problem with my wii, it stopped reading discs, had to get a new one, and didnt even REALIZE that i couldnt redownload my shit like my ps3. So, now I don't use wiiware even though there are a few games that I'd like to pick up. Same with the DSi.

Isn't this the same problem the pspgo has?

the games you buy on PSN can be installed on up to 5 PSP systems and be redownloaded infinitely. boo Nintendo!

Yup, wii downloads stick with the console. Mine was stolen, so the thief has several DLC games to play as well as Brawl, which was in the console. Kind of fucked up if you ask me. If my PC is stolen (who steals desktops?) at least I can download all my steam games again. How hard is it to set up accounts for individual users and organise DLC that way? Nintendo don't do it because they see no benefit to them. Unfortunately that might be why they're getting so raped by DS piracy.

Boo hoo. You cannot copy Mario Clock VII. (I couldn't resist.)

I just find it interesting that both major handheld players have total screw-ups for current adopters. Imagine a handheld that made it easy for, you know, a gamer to do things with it.

I now have reasons not to get the latest generations of each platform. Thanks for saving me money, Sony and Nintendo!

As the quantity of useful features to legitimate buyers goes down, Acekard 2i sales go up. Simple.

Psywolf:

Yep! It's easy, too. You just connect the PSP to the PS3 via USB, then copy the files over. You can copy over the full game AND your memory card save, so you can continue on the PSP exactly where you left off on the PS3.

ACK! I'm going to have to seriously reconsider downloading games from Nintendo's service now. That's a pretty serious load of bullshit right there.

I do like Nintendo's straightforwardness when it comes to all these modern bells and whistles, but this is just ignorant. I'd ask what they were thinking, but it's apparent they weren't.

not like I want a DSi anyway. if anything it's more a reason not to get one.

@Psywolf:

loves the ps3/psp connectivity. i personally got FFVII just so i could play it on my ps3 and big tv (cheaper than finding a psone version on ebay thats for sure!) and then just copy my save to my psp when i need to play on the go :)

yea, always amazes me how nintendo can leave out some huge features but still do so well. i guess if your gaming consoles do games well; you can get away with gimping the system of other non-gaming features. hopefully the trade-in/service time isn't too long for those who do have to send their DSi in.

@matrixdude171 no, you can not only transfer the games but if you purchased them via PSN you can just go and re download them- I upgraded my HD in the ps3 a while back and when you use the backup utitlity and restore to a new drive any downloaded games or demos don't work anymore so I had to re download them- it's as easy as going to your account and looking up your history and re downloading it- even worked for games like ragdoll kung fu that i got when it was free but costs $ now- as PSPgo is on the same psn I would assume that you have the same abilities to hold any purchases to your account

It's not a huge issue for me. I use the Wiiware and DSiware service, not extensively, but its a humble collection. Now, if my systems bites the dusts I'll move on. Unless its one of my "must have" games (really, only a couple at most for me) then I won't buy it. Done. I can deal with it, but the question is; can Nintendo?

I won't argue that Nintendo is all about rebranding games than really pushing new ones. I'm just glad the DS is region free (for the most part) and the Wii can play GameCube games. I can deal with that 'cause I actually HAVE those games.
