DS successor confirmed, will have motion control photo

For the first time, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has openly discussed a Nintendo DS successor and some of the features that will be included in this two-screened behemoth. While the last DS was a humble system based on a number of gimmicks that served it very well, the next DS will be bringing some real horsepower to the table ... along with motion control.

"[It will have] highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing," Iwata tells Japanese newspaper Asashi Shimbun. Until now, motion tracking devices have been available for the DS in peripheral form. The next generation of DS will include such input as standard.

The prospect of a new DS is exciting, although I hope the motion control isn't over-the-top. It's bad enough expecting us to blow into a microphone while on the bus -- waving our arms around in public is just asking for trouble. In any case, are you excited for a more powerful DS, or are you still happy with the old one ... sorry, old four

I see there's a confirmation of this now. That's great, last I heard it was just a rumour, but turns out it WAS confirmed. Similar to the Vitality Sensor / New LoZ hitting in 2010.

As for the DS², one thing springs to mind.
[It will have] highly detailed graphics
Nintendo, you better have the Tegra 2 chip in that baby like everyone says you're going to.

Hmm...I have a hard time believing something like that would actually work for a handheld. But, then again, that's what everybody said about the DS and it's touchscreen play, so who knows, this could turn out great.

I'm down for a DS successor, but if they're gonna use the cameras for motion control, well, Wario Ware Snapped pretty much has proven that idea sucks. Motion control seems more practical for consoles where you have space to move around.

Maybe they mean tilting and such, though, like what they did way back with Kirby's Tilt'n'Tumble on GBA.

Oh, nice little fun fact:
If the DS2 does in fact include the Tegra 2 chip, it will be capable of broadcasting in 1080p, higher than their main console, the Wii can do.

If I can play Wii games on it - sure!

I have a Nintendo Wii, thank you.

Sometimes I wonder why they're doing this needless PSP SKU style of upgrades.

A simple accelerometer would be fine thank you.

I guessed at a motion controlled DS getting announced a while back, and people scoffed.

Who's scoffing now, hmmmm?

Oh, it's still you. Sorry.

I wonder how a motion-controlled handheld would work. People were skeptical about touch screen, though, and worked out rather well so I'm reserving my judgement.

@The Silent Protagonist: My thoughts exactly.

Wii remotes are slightly more replaceable than a DS when they accidentally get hucked across a room.

Aww man, I just got a ds last Christmas. I guess that the motion control part might just be an accelometer just like in the iPhone. Something more radical than would be pretty fucked up.

Interesting, but maybe I should wait for the second iteration coming out one year later.

NO! Come on!
Just like the microphone, this is something that just does NOT fit with a handheld console!
I play my DS on the bus and such, games requiring motion won't work.

I think it will be something iPhone-ish, with accelerometer.

I wonder if it will have a persistent 3G connection to authenticate games, since DS was violently raped by piracy.

@The Silent Protagonist: Actually, Tilt N' Tumble was released for the Game Boy Color...

Damnable motion controls getting in everything...if it works, great. But I'm exceptionally skeptical.

Just give me more horsepower so I can play The Dig and Curse of Monkey Island with scummVM and I will be happy. Do gamers really want motion control in their handhelds? Has anyone asked? I don't even care for the accelerometer in my iPhone....

I've played New Super Mario Wii so much that when I now play New Super Mario DS I constantly shake the DS to spin and every time I do it, I of course don't spin and the top screen snaps backwards and I fear I'm slowing breaking my DS... so yeah... motion control may not be the best thing for a flip screen device. It's okay on the iPhone because its one solid piece... but on the DS, I just don't know...

So they confirm motion controls, but have they even mentioned a touch-screen? I'd much rather see next-generation touch capabilities, especially if it had some kind of haptic feedback tech included.

I was expecting them to unveil a new DS at E3 this year. Hope they don't let me down.

successor to ds? don't care...yet. i won't be deciding to buy whatever handheld nintendo comes up with until long after it has proven its worth, or lack thereof. early adoption is for suckers.

Keep the backwards compatibility and maybe return the GBA slot (ha) and I'd be more interested. I may hold off on adopting early, what with these new editons and all...

as long as the motion control isn't shoehorned in with everything. there're plenty of Wii games that don't use it, after all.

This is the logical progression of things for Nintendo. After seeing the money that could be made from broken Wiimotes thrown by stupid people, they realized that they could make much more from broken DS's thrown by stupid people.

Are people breaking their iPhones? Just because its motion controls doesn't mean its wave your arms around wildly. Its a handheld, so you have to at least see the screen to play it.

I have no doubt that the motion control will be better-implemented than we think, but I really don't see how necessary it is for everything in the industry to be motion-controlled. After a while it just becomes a redundant gimmick that creates cramps.

So a portable Natal, basically?

OH FUCK THIS SHIT, WHO WANTS TO BE FUCKING WAVING THEIR ARMS AROUND IN FRONT OF A FUCKING PORTABLE? AM I GOING TO BE DOING A STEERING MOTION WHEN PLAYING A FUCKING RACING GAME ON A FUCKING BUS? FUCK YOU NINTENDO, FUCK YOU AND YOUR STUPID FUCKING GIMMICKS.

Glad I got that out of my system.

Now, after the fit of rage has lifted, I can clearly see that it was said the new DS will be an iPhone clone and not a portable Natal.

As long as they don't introduce yet another cartridge format, they'll have my interest. Having to carry around physical media is the antithesis of a portable console.
