I don't think that anyone would be surprised to hear that the Nintendo DS will end up being the US's best-selling game system of 2007. Seriously, as much as Captain Obvious likes to help out with stating the obvious, this time he just flew by the Nintendo of America offices as it looked like they had this covered.
A press release from Nintendo says that more than 6 million Nintendo DS units have been sold this year through November, which is where they get their "one every five seconds" rate. The system's sales have increased every year since its 2004 launch.
"There's no letup in sight," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Nintendo DS appeals strongly to both core and casual gamers, and its momentum is set to propel us into 2008."
The DS has also broken the Thanksgiving week sales record. The Gameboy Advance held the previous title, with 600,000 sold in one week. This year, the DS tops that with 650,000.
Between the DS and the Wii, I think casual gaming is here to stay. Hit the jump to read the full release.
While many eyes are focused on home video game consoles, Nintendo projects Nintendo DS(TM) to be the top-selling system of the year. More than 6 million Nintendo DS portable video game systems have sold in the United States in 2007 through Nov. 30, according to internal Nintendo of America Inc. sales numbers. That's a rate of about one sold every five seconds of 2007, enough to project Nintendo DS will be the top-selling video game system of any kind for the year. Nintendo DS has increased its sales in the United States every year since it launched in November 2004.
"There's no letup in sight," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Nintendo DS appeals strongly to both core and casual gamers, and its momentum is set to propel us into 2008."
Nintendo DS began 2007 strong, but its momentum only increased as the year progressed. Before 2007, Game Boy(R) Advance held the all-time U.S. Thanksgiving week sales record, with 600,000 systems sold in 2005. But Nintendo DS beat that Thanksgiving week record with more than 650,000 sold.
The huge appeal of Nintendo DS stems from the diversity of software available for the system. Four Nintendo DS games have sold more than 2 million in the United States alone, including New Super Mario Bros.(R), Mario Kart(R) DS, Pokemon(R) Diamond and Super Mario(R) 64 DS. Another eight games have sold more than 1 million each in the United States, including Brain Age(TM): Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day, Pokemon(R) Pearl, Animal Crossing(R): Wild World, Big Brain Academy(TM) and four separate versions of Nintendogs(TM).
The worldwide innovator in the creation of interactive entertainment, Nintendo Co., Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its Wii(TM), Nintendo DS(TM), Game Boy(R) Advance and Nintendo GameCube(TM) systems. Since 1983, Nintendo has sold nearly 2.5 billion video games and more than 430 million hardware units globally, and has created industry icons like Mario(TM), Donkey Kong(R), Metroid(R), Zelda(TM) and Pokemon(R). A wholly owned subsidiary, Nintendo of America Inc., based in Redmond, Wash., serves as headquarters for Nintendo's operations in the Western Hemisphere. I am proud to announce I do not own a DS, nor will I ever. I don't enjoy playing games on the go. I like there being a time and place I can do my gaming... in front of my big ass high definition projector. I am sane enough to be able to go a few hours without a game.
I do own that Zelda DS Lite. I'm kinda wishing I went ahead and just imported the Icy Blue one from play asia...but the Icy Blue wasn't $150 with a game I don't even have.
Is there something wrong with me if I honestly do not want one? Is there something wrong with me if I honestly do not think a Wii is worth stabbing an old lady over?
@ brainderailment
Ok, you don't want a DS or a Wii, fine (well you don't want a Wii enough to commit geriatricide) do you have to be an ass about it? I can't remember what a handful of guys did to get 360s but I do recall that ONE guy shot somebody for PS3 too, now every system has its own psychotic mascots.
I'm still waiting for a blue (royal preferably) or green (spring or a lightish pale green) to come out. I'll totally trade my polar white one for one of those.

No captain obvious?
Zombie Beatle vice president= win.
That's about the same as my heart rate... i feel so tired... it's cold in here...
Captain Obvious is busy with the Spike VGAs.
I love the quote, and yes I do have one. :) I still can't believe how fast they are selling though.
And how much longer is George Harrison around? I remember seeing the post about him leaving a while ago, yet every comment I read is still by him...
NO WAI!!!

George Harrison? That guy is still spttin out stuff?
@king3vbo:
Great signature.
ShadowXOR: You think that's bad, I thought George Harrison was dead!
...... :(
I just bought one about a week ago!
Puzzle Quest (which I finally picked up, $15 at Target currently) just got me hooked back into mine. :)
@deiga-the-semivaliant:
I don't know if you're serious or not but either way you made me laugh! LOL :)
deiga, wrong George Harrison.
I want my own DS someday :(
Yep. I own a DS as well.
It's amazing how popular this system is. I love my DS, that's for sure.

I am part of the problem. I bought two.
Well I can't say I don't understand it. The DS is a great little handheld
I have the rare Gray DS Lite. It's not really that color, it's just the layer of dust that accumulated on it.
Well TRU having that 100$ ds deal will probably make the numbers skyrocket.
hey i do have a ds. but its not blue its white
I bought a DS, gave to my little brother for his birthday and he bricked it.
I do own that Zelda DS Lite. I'm kinda wishing I went ahead and just imported the Icy Blue one from play asia...but the Icy Blue wasn't $150 with a game I don't even have.
and I still have the phatass DS. the Hot Red one.
Now the big question: What is everyone doing with their DSes?
I really should get off my ass and get a DS one of these days. *sigh*
At Toys R Us, we sold 200 units in three hours. There was a lineup of people for them at 8:00am for our sale on them.
We can't keep the units in stock at all. And the Wiis and Guitar Hero III
Is there something wrong with me if I honestly do not want one? Is there something wrong with me if I honestly do not think a Wii is worth stabbing an old lady over?
Am I ok?
I don't have one.
I had one for a year (launch day DSL :D) and sold it to my desperate friend for $150, Collectors Edition FFXII, and some McDonald.
BEST DEAL EVAR.
Anyone who says the DS is for casuals need to shut the fuck up and play some goddamn Contra. Goddamn I am sick of this whole "casual/hardcore" crap.
I played Cooking Mama and Contra back to back yesterday, what the hell does that tell you?
It doesn't tell you shit, that's what.
That's...fairly impressive.
I love my DS. So much so that I've bought 5 of them over the years.
3 are with relatives and friends, one went back when I was misguided enough to buy a PSP, and I have a silver DS lite currently.
I highly recommend that if you do not have a DS, that you import a Japanese one, you'll be the envy of all your friends and neighbors.
I love my silver DS Phat.
If you guys pick up an R4 and not emulate on it, you'll never put your DS down.
@Faith: I managed to snag my DS with relative ease when I went there. I grabbed the Phourglass version and two games.

Go Nintendo!
I've got a Ds Phat and my GF's gota pink lite-one but hers is already from 2006 and mine from 2005 i think so they're not in the list...
I don't have one....
Anyway, good for them.
I have 3. They're addicting little buggers.
Sounds about right.
