Captain Obvious: DS outsold 3DS photo

The 3DS is having a hard time living up to the success of its predecessor, the Nintendo DS. If you need evidence of that, then look no further than last month's North American sales numbers. According to those, the DS is still outshining Nintendo's successor.

The 3DS sold 143,000 units in June, a number which the DS more than doubled with a sales figure of 386,000. Nintendo, of course, is focusing on the fact that it sold 800,000 systems in total, but when you break the numbers down, it leads to a rather embarrassing conclusion for the lauded "glasses-free 3D" system.

The 3DS did get a bit of good news, with word that Ocarina of Time 3D sold 283,000 copies, which ain't too shabby at all.

Still, the 3DS isn't doing great and, given that Nintendo released the thing too early and has been mishandling it ever since, you're going to have to forgive me for thinking any humiliation is wholly deserved.

Yep. besides the Ocarina of Time, my 3ds sits there like a teal paperweight, getting dusty.

I'm planning on getting the 3DS this week actually. I need Super Street Fighter 4, Zelda OOT and Resident Evil. I just wish they would of had a way to play DS games without having to repurchase them, and I think that's what is really hurting the sales. Game consoles are becoming more and more app-crazy these days.

Do I really need Netflix on my 3DS?

The DS has several games I'm interested in, but I can't bring muself to buy one, as I spend a bucketload of money on ps3,xbox and wii games already. And wii is getting a rhythm heaven game, and that was one of the games I wanted to play the most on the DS

nintendos 3d gimmick is old news already with the EVO 3D phone. now phones can do more than a 3ds.

My brother's friend, who I previous mentioned works at Nintendo (hey, he might be your dad, Jim!), had this to say about the DS vs 3DS: "Maybe we shouldn't have released a product that looks like, plays like, and is pretty much the same as our previous product for a higher price point and practically nothing worthwhile to play on it."

Brutal2D: Having to rebuy DS games? What are you talking about?

If you are talking about DSiWare (downloads), it IS possible to transfer them.

Gotta admit, I almost regret buying my 3DS on launch month. I should have at least waited for the good games, by then there will already be a price cut.

I read that a store in Canada will sell the 3DS for 200$ at the end of the month. I wonder if its already a price cut, or just a limited-time discount.

Didn't the DS Lite have a price drop last month? So of course its going to sell better, because what parent wouldn't buy one for their kid, for the summer at $99? Compare that to $250 for the 3DS, so that's more of a big ticket Christmas item, not a summer grading from school gift.

Another anti-3DS article by Destructoid!

The original DS came out in November, so you can't really compare sales of the two systems. You really underestimate the power of holiday sales and parents buying them for their kids. If the 3DS was released in November you would be seeing much higher sales numbers for the first month. Speaking of which, the original DS had almost zero games other than Mario 64 for an entire year, whereas the 3DS is timing all of the big hitters to come out right around the holidays. Expect sales numbers for the 3DS to skyrocket this holiday season and then hopefully we can stop seeing all of these troll articles on Destructoid, Kotaku, Joystiq, etc.

Nintendo. Did you know my funds are finite? I know, this is hard to imagine.

Also, with the 3DS having the most appealing exclusive (current gen) game is OOT. Logic and my n64 with said game combined to prevent me from wasting $300 to play a game I already have beat and own.

That Pricetag, game selection, and not apparent enough improved hardware make this handheld not on my radar. Sorry dudes, but Wii-like graphics on a handheld that costs more than the Wii, isn't blowing my technical spec socks off.

It's generally because the 3DS offers absolutely nothing new to games. Woo, you can now see things in 3D. How neat.
How exactly does that affect the gameplay? It doesn't. Most of the wildest concepts for using the dual/touch screen were already done on the DS, there isn't really any reason to upgrade at all.

You're not wrong. In fact, didn't the GBA also outsell the DS for a few months, after its launch? Which I think the DS did pretty well for itself in the end, after having a slow start. So I'm sure the 3DS will do just fine as well, come this holiday season!

hey jim, why not make a comparison that isn't apples to oranges. anyone can easily surmise that a freight train like the ds is going to out sell ANY new product within said new product's first 4 months. your report is really a forgone conclusion, and doesn't actually hint at anything remotely close to failure.

how does the first 4 months of ds phat compare to first 4 months of 3ds? that's a question worth asking. your open ridicule is baseless, and contrived. i'd appreciate a little less blow hard, and a little more intelligence from your write ups, thanks.

It's still a matter of time, 3DS should have been released this month instead of February, yet I think Nintendo is happy to outsell theirselves, the real deal would be to compete against the PS Vita. I have a 3DS and I'm happy with it (could be happier, that's true) and I would also love to buy a Vita when it comes out, by the way.

"Sony claims, so says Mercury News, that they sold 250,000 units of the PSP in May; Mercury also claims that Nintendo sold 57,000 units of the DS. However, the big surprise was that the GBA sold 223,000 units in May. It's still selling strong despite the DS on the market. This may be because of the DS' still burgeoning library of software and the GBA's more attractive price point. "

This was may 2005..........

People love to forget the DS was launched to fail as well. It had no games, just vague promises of awesome. That's why PSP spent it's first year literally beating the shit out of Nintendo because, despite common claims today, it had games and had a roadmap to it's future. It was after Nintendo turned all Tina Turner on Sony and actually focused on DS at E3 instead of the assumption that "Nintendo Handheld = Sell" that DS's fortunes turn around. Here we are, 6 years later, Nintendo didn't learn a fucking thing. In fact, they doubled down with 2 N64 remakes.

The 3DS's main problem is lack of content, and that is usually the case in the first year of a system's life. April and May were terrible for the 3DS 2 months of almost noting for the system, and there were really only 2 good launch games (ghost recon and SSFIV) I didn't really touch mine until the eshop came out, and zelda and mercs 3d followed that. I still think nintendo should have waited to launch with OoT, and a working online system, but hey what do I know I'm not a money grubbing stock holder that makes products come out before they are ready.

Look, there is plenty to do with the 3DS for now. Ghost Recon is by far the best launch title. Street Fighter 4 and Blaz Blue are great, if you like fighting games. Besides Ocarina of Time, download Link's Awakening from the 3DS Eshop. Resident Evil: Mercenaries is great, buy a new copy for cheap because of the save system. Green Lantern, Excitebike 3D Classic and Bust A Move Universe is great for the kiddos. I love soccer, so I have Pro Evolution Soccer 2011. See, plenty of good games to hold you over. Plenty of good games are on the way too. Devil Survivor Overclocked, Star Fox 64, Mario Kart, Ace Combat, Tales of the Abyss, Luigi's Mansion 2, Smash Brothers, Paper Mario, Super Mario Brothers, etc.

It's expensive, it doesn't have a lot of great games yet, and not everyone is sold on 3D as being a worthwhile technology.

Still, glad to hear the DS is selling strong. Things really took off for that handheld once devs realized they didn't need to use the gimmicky touchscreen and mic capabilities to make good games.
