DS finally outsells Game Boy, best-selling handheld ever photo

Up until now, Nintendo's GameBoy was the best selling handheld game system ever, with some 118 million units sold. When you look back at your collection of portables, it makes sense. I still have the ol' Green Screen, Game Boy Pocket, a broken Game Boy Color, and a GBA SP. I had the Micro for some time and I lost that sweet GBP that had the Timex Indiglo backlight. Hey, that's how they got that record!

Now that I think of it, they're doing the same with the DS brand. I have bought the original DS, the DS Lite (still have a blue Japanese launch day model), the DSi (likewise, a launch day green model) and I just got a US DSi XL. Regretting the last one, BTW. I'm sure I did my part to help Nintendo hit this record of 128.89 million units sold.

What's scary is that Nintendo is far from done with the DS.

DS officially surpasses Game Boy as the best-selling portable game device...ever [GoNintendo]

Are you sure about that last part? The 3DS may very well steal its thunder come release time. Unless they develop both DS and 3DS games once it comes out.

you bring up a good point, dale. i never really thought about it, but i've bought three ds's (one was stolen). that's a decent amount of cash for one game collection, over five hundred invested just in the system. not as bad as trying to keep up with apple, though.

Hey you are right. When I bought a GameBoy Color again in last October I realized how tenacious it was. The DS is delicate like a cellphone.

My DS Phat still works fine. I would rather have a Lite, but it ain't worth the cash. As for the DSi, two thumbs down for lack of GBA slot :(

I've owned 3 DS's since the Phat came out (Phat, DSLite, and DSi). Out of every single console out there, the Gameboy is the only one I've owned every single iteration of. I do love the Nintendo handhelds.

Why are you regretting your DSi XL? I am completely loving my XL. And yes, it's ok that you don't like it, I'm simply curious as to why.

I've bought two. I upgrade from my launch DS to a DS Lite, and I've been content ever since. I'd love to know how many hours I've put into the thing. It has to be well over a thousand.

Yeah, not surprised. If the Gameboy was a landmark of the gaming industry, then the DS was a turning point in gaming itself. Then again, just like the Gameboy, I find myself owning multiple ones. Only two (DS phat and DS lite) but if the 3DS is considered a part of the DS family, then that'll probably make it three.

I bet they'll try to lump 3DS in with DS as a platform when calculating lifetime sales.

Though I still own the original GB, GBP and GBC, I skipped the GBA and original DS. The only handheld I have now is the DS Lite, and I intend to keep it that way until the 3DS rolls around.

I had two iterations of ol' monochrome. Grey Brick and gold Pocket. Then I had the translucent purple Color, translucent whitish blue GBA, and Electric Blue DS, which still works to this day! Could probably use a new battery sometime though...

I'm gonna wait on the 3DS though. Not because I have doubts--I don't--but I want to see what V2 is gonna look like/offer before I plunk down the coins. That and by the time that happens, there'll be a decent library out there to entice me. :P

I collect gameboys, and I've currently got over a dozen. My favorite, though, is still the own I saved up for and bought myself, the limited edition ice blue gameboy pocket.

I still haven't finished that "Hook" game on GBA. Somehow, it scared the shit out of me back then.

I think there's some semantics involved here.... these products are so evolutionary, it's hardly cut and dried to decide how to count them... "Gameboy" and "DS" are more brands than anything else, IMHO. when I got my Day one phat DS, I consider it a a replacement "gameboy" for my GB SP.
