DRM Tool available for Xbox 360: Elite owners rejoice photo

Here's good news for people don't like stupid hassle. Major Nelson has just announced the launch of a Content License Transfer Tool (or DRM Tool) for the Xbox 360. This feature will let you transfer your licenses from console to console, though you only get one transfer per year.

The team is happy to announce that the Content License Transfer Tool (also know as the DRM Tool) is now available on Xbox.com. It’s an easy process that has two parts: Transfer your licenses on Xbox.com, then download them manually on your console.

This is great news for people who have replaced their hard drives or swapped out consoles in the past. Before the DRM Tool, people who changed their consoles had to be connected to Xbox Live in order to enjoy any of their downloaded content, because the license for that content was restricted to the original console it was bought on, and the only other source of that license was online. The DRM Tool fixes all that.

Major Nelson doesn't make that clear, so we got official confirmation from The 'Soft itself that you could indeed play XBLA games and use DLC while offline now:

This will take care of that issue. Once you transfer over the licenses to the new hard drive you should have no issues accessing any content from your account, even if you aren't hooked up to LIVE.

Microsoft will also do the license transfer if you ever have to get your console replaced (and we all know THAT happens a lot). So, if you were thinking about upgrading your HDD in the future, rest assured that you won't need an Internet connection to play Doom in the future. Rejoice!

I'm tempted to pick up a 120GB HDD on ebay now. Excellent!

I just moved in with my girlfriend so this is great news. The way it is now if she wants to play an XBLA game that I've downloaded, both of our profiles need to be signed in. It's such a hassle. I'll be doing this transfer ASAP.

I completely agree with Kratosmaster. 1 year is way too soon for how easily those RRoDs are given out.

somehow I see this being dumbed down to like...a month or so wait.

Dude... You just unintentionally used a picture of John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants. Looking very unenthused, I might add.

The largest software company in the world has managed to create a solution to a relativly simple problem and it only took them what, two years?

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST ITS ABOUT TIME!!!!

Why they chose to implement this in the first place is beyond me, but at least now we have half a fix. Now the two issues are just wether this allows you to transfer between regions if you travel overseas and what happens if your 360 craps out more than once in a year.

Good Lord, finally. I can't believe it took them this long to implement this. I wanted to kill something when I had to get online to play my handful of arcade games after a while.

TurboSpaz, I doubt Microsoft doing it for you when a box RRODs will count toward the once-per-year.

Upgrading the hard drive never had any effect on DRM to my knowledge. Buying a new 360 and earlier replaced systems were a different story though.

About fucking time they do this. I have my xbox connected to Xbox Live through my Macbook and I hate having to connect them together just to play Geometry Wars. I have 19 XBLA games, 16 of which I cannot play unless I'm connected to Xbox Live.

MS transfers your licenses for you automatically when you get a RRoD, so you won't have to worry about that.

The once a year thing is only if you want to transfer your licenses manually (not a broken console).

Ok never mind then about the once a year thing being bad. If you need more than that, then I can only assume you have commitment problems.

It's ONLY if you change consoles if you upgrade your HDD you don't need this, the thing that sucks is it is only once every 12 months.

For people overseas in countrys that are not officially supported but Xbox 360 games and consoles are still sold, are in a bit of a bind, not all of the content will be availabel to be re-downloaded again.

I don't see the once a year thing being an issue. How many times a year does a person upgrade their HDD or upgrade to an Elite? He already said that if you send it in for repair they do it for you. I imagine they have the authority to do it as many times as needed.

I don't understand why you can only do this once a year. I mean you can swap/lend your disk based games to other people so why won't they let you do the same with XBLA games?

If I used the DRM Tool on my current system which has a 20gb HDD, but decided to upgrade sometime in the next few months to a 120gb HDD whilst keeping the same system, and obviously moved the content over via a transfer tool, will the DRM still be in effect?

Finally, Thanks for letting me know, I just did it and transferred my 616 licenses! Please stop saying that if if you buy a new hard drive that the DRM issue occurs. It does not. The issue only occurs if you buy a new console like the elite. The elites hard drive has nothing to do with it and you guys are supposed to know that.
