Driving games create killers (or, at least, very unsafe missiles) photo

We do a lot of stories here about the media's fascination with video games turning people into killers and generally we snark and say something to the effect of 'the media is wrong, we're right, everyone else please die', and then aside from everyone else dying, everything is right in the world again. Of course, some scientist would have to come along and actually study gaming only to discover that there may be some truth to the media's claims, and as happens all too often, science has made me look like an idiot (see: Vatican vs Copernicus for more).

The BBC is reporting on a recent study that shows that "More than a third of young drivers are more likely to go faster on the roads after playing on-screen driving games". Not only that, but "27% of motorists aged 16 to 24 admitted more risk-taking on the road after a gaming session", as well. Of course, this doesn't contradict the idea that the mass media has blown the dangers of gaming out of proportion, but it does lend a bit of credence to the idea that people, especially teens, can be influenced by almost anything and that, in the end, people are stupid, dangerous beasts whose only hope for survival is subjugation by a master race of subterranean creatures intent on farming humanity like cattle.

Let us bow down to our subterranean overlords now.

Seriously some people just really can't take playing video games without getting all into it... the worst I do is stand up and stick my tongue out like a jack ass.

Oh and when I play oblivion I dress up like a medieval warrior.

I call BS, mostly because I think those people may have just been inherently more likely to drive fast because of exactly what you said, they're idiots. I have friends who play no video games, but drive like freakin' mad men. Meanwhile I play a lot of games and I am a very safe, conscious driver.

Well if people model thier driving habits after those encouraged in gaming, then yeah, they're going to either punch it or slam on the brakes at the last possible moment. But, thankfully, we had schools and driving tests to weed out those that practice this sort of vehicular idiocy. Right?

So, if they drive faster after playing video games, what about after watching F1, rally or even an action film with loads fo driving in? If this isn't BS, how does it stack up against other genres and such.

I think this study has some merit. I know I have driven faster after playing games. I have also driven faster after watching movies like Gone in 60 Seconds. I have also driven faster while listening to all kinds of music from Rock to Classical (that Classical music has got some crazy beats!). So I think my point is clear. Avoid me on the road, always, and people who are in the mindset to drive faster will do so for every reason including video games. But I think we already knew that.

Well, I believe videogames definitely affect you. I for one can't stop stomping on turtles whenever I see them. Damn you, Mario Bros!

Speeding and craziness aside, I think driving a lot of sim driving games can also make you a better driver, understanding and applying proper lines, mechainics, apexes, etc. Oh wait, what if you play a lot of Burnout?

Nevermind.

What are the odds of that! We were just talking about the ass-burning scene here at work and now it's on the home page. Magic!

Pokemon causes multiple pet deaths each year when children attempt to compact their animals into tiny capsules.

I actually do believe that driving games make me drive faster right after I play them (though I would never admit it in a survey, idiots!).

However, I think this is really the only time I mimic a game, other than a sports game, which is essentially what a driving game is.

I've never felt the need to go kill people after playing an FPS, and I've never felt the need to fight after playing a fighting game.

Driving games have helped me avoid accidents on numerous occasions using evasive driving methods. You could almost say they've saved my life, no joke. Fuck the negative media.

When my dad was first teaching him to drive, I scared the shit out of him by saying "So where is the turbo button?"

My girlfriend refuses to play burnout since she started driving a year ago... so these findings seem realistic, but I want to know HOW significant this change is in terms of risk... are they more or less likely to get into an accident? How much faster are they driving? What is "risk taking" defined as in the study?

Playing Super Mario made me 27% more likely to cause the death by stomping of my neighbor's pet turtle.

There's definitely some merit to this study because I know that after a lengthy session of Toca 2 or PGR2 that my desire to throw my Grand Am into a powerslide spiked dramatically.
