Dragon's Lair Trilogy packs in the classics for Wii photo

Wanna hear a joke? Laserdiscs! Hah. I kill me. Seriously, though, maybe the best thing to come from the doomed technology was arguably the Dragon's Lair interactive videogames (and porno flicks your parents couldn't really hide). With arcades dead in most parts of the country, and Laserdisc players buried in a pit somewhere, what's a retro gamer to do?

Destineer has the answer. The publisher has announced that it will be releasing The Dragon's Lair Collection, a Wii compilation that features Dragon's Lair, Dragon's Lair 2: Time Warp, and Space Ace! all on one disc. The future of the past is now with current day technology!

The disc will feature all of the original gameplay modes, remastered animation, standard and widescreen versions, and a "moves guide" for beginners. Don't want to play? Don't! Destineer is also including a "Watch Mode," which will let you just sit back and enjoy the show.

The game's out this fall, and it's only $29.99.

Hmm now hopefully it'll have better features than the Blu-Ray versions... can't really beat out the original cell transfers.

That Watch Mode makes it an automatic purchase for me. Don Bluth animation is always solid gold.

Not only can you get dragons lair on space ace for about 5 dollars total on the iPhone, they don't seem that good. Am I missing the point, because it seems like it's nothing but quick time events where you mash on certain commands.

That's exactly what the games are. It may not seem like much now because of the limited gameplay. Back in 1983 however when you saw Dragon's Lair sitting next to rows of Pac-Man, Galaga and Berzerk games it was incredible.

The iPhone versions are good ports, but like all iPhone ports the lack of a physical control scheme really hurts.

It's cheaper than buying the Blu-rays, but seeing as the main appeal of this is Don Bluth's animation, I'd still rather have the games in HD, especially since they seem to play with no problems. Only problem is that it's $30 per Blu-ray...

Whoah! Really? That's awesome! I've always wanted to get my hands on these games! I can't even see them online. And with remastered animation and a few extra modes? Sign me up! It even uses the Wii's memory capacity by having all 3 of them on one disc. I'll definitely be picking this one up.

@bobyoko: the size limit for wiiware games is about 40 MB.

a full playthrough of Dragon's Lair 1 takes about 10 minutes- about 14 400 frames (assuming the animation runs at 24 FPS). that leaves (40 000 kilobytes / 14 400 frames =) 2,8 kilobytes for each image. and that's without the death scenes, the audio and any other features.

so no, this couldn't have hit wiiware without being horribly crippled.
